The growth is rapid paced, with 2012 sales at 120 million tablets, increasing from about 17 million in 2010 when the iPad was first introduced.

Apple sold 35.1 million iPhones in the first quarter of 2012, an increase of 88% from the prior year. Apple sold 11.8 million iPads in the first quarter 2012, double the volume in the prior year. Profits reported by Apple for the first quarter 2012 were $11.62 billion, an increase from $5.98 billion the prior year, almost doubling profits.

The profits generated on large sales and higher margins helps Apple invest in new products.

News Corporation has designed a newspaper for the internet with the personal involvement of Rupert Murdoch. The newspaper is called The Daily and will be supported by Apple for the I-Pad. Pricing is 14 cents a day, 99 cents a week, or $40 a year.

Th HP PC tablet comes bundled with the HP Photosmart e-station printer. This printer sells for $399, so the 7 inch HP tablet is being given away. The profits that HP makes on the ink make up for the cost. HP prices its ink at $7500 a gallon according to numbers worked out by Gartner Research. The operating margins for HP's Printer division are 17% for the last quarter compared to 5% for the PC division.

Steve Jobs anticipated a post PC period when he told a technology conference in 2010 that PC's would retain a lot of their value, but he said they will be used only by one out of so many users. Tim Cook told a Goldman Sachs investor conference recently: "From the first day it shipped, we thought- not just me, many of us thought at Apple- that the tablet market would become larger than the PC market, and it was just a matter of time that it took for that to occur." Analysts see this happening sometime between 2013 and 2017.
