Rupert Stadler, CEO of Audi brand of VW, is arrested on Dec. 19, 2018, in connection with the diesel emissions scandal. He is the only member of VW Executive Board to be arrested. Prosecutors raided Mr. Stadler's home and looked for evidence in the investigation. Mr. Stadler says he will cooperate by giving testimony.

Matthias Muller, 61, is the new choice for CEO of VW following the emissions scandal in 2015. Changes at VW with the departure of Mr. Winterkorn, include the resignation of Ulrich Hackenberg, chief engineer of Audi, Wolfgang Hatz, chief of R&D at Porsche, and Heinz-Jakob Neusser, development chief of Porsche. Hatz and Hackenberg worked closely with Winterkorn. VW says about 11 million cars were equiped with the software that turned off the emissions control mechanism on the road. This was on the VW Passat, Jetta, Audi 3, all built on the same platform and using this software to circumvent emissions controls. The new head of VW USA is Mr. Vahland, 58, head of Skoda, who is a former manufacturing strategy review chief of GM Europe. Matthias Muller, is backed by the Porsche-Piech families that are large shareholders in VW. Ferdinand Piech had actually lost confidence in Winterkorn and tried to remove him from the CEO position in April 2015, before a turn of events led to the emissions scandal. Muller completed an apprenticeship with Audi in 1977, followed by studying computer engineering at the Munich University of Applied Sciences. In 1984 he joined Audi's IT department, becoming product manager for Audi 3 in 1993, and taking on overall product management at Audi in 1995. In 2007 VW's new CEO Winterkorn appointed him head of product strategy for VW, and in 2010 to the CEO position at Porsche....

Vahland is one of the most experienced executives at VW, heading the China operations, and since 2010 in charge of the Skoda operations based in the Czech Republic. Tesla which had 11% of the new electric cars registered in 2024 through July, suddenly goes into free fall with registrations dropping to 3% and a 33% decline in the European EV market. From being second only to VW in EV market in Germany Tesla is not with a model even in the top 10. Tesla had got the support of the Scholz government to put abig factory near Berlin. Tesla CEO Musk's politics is having some impact with endorsement of the AfD by Musk seen as interference in German elections. The Tesla Y is priced at $74,000 another hurdle for buyers. And now there are many rivals from Germany and China. In an expanding market Tesla has lost 60% in registrations in first half of 2025 showing how deeply. BYD of China has a entry model Dolphin Surf for $20,000 in Germany, and has increased sales by 290%. Still Chinese car makers will only have 12% of the EV market and it is VW that is a winner in the competitive market in Europe. Changes in the management board at  VW that will lead to an accelerated investment in electric vehicles. Labor leaders had sought to oust CEO Herbert Diess. Mr. Diess will no longer oversee the VW brand or the company's business in China. The management board is expanded to 11 from seven previously. Three new board positions were created two filled by women. The result is that Mr. Diess will now be working with overall guidance from the board and other members that seeks to accelerate VW's conversion into an electric car company. About $180 billion in investment was approved half of this going into digitization and electric cars.

These changes are happening as Germany goes in a new direction under the leadership of Mr Scholz of the SPD and the Greens vice chancellor, Mr Habeck, who is also in charge of an expanded economy ministry including climate change, with large investments planned to combat climate change.

Six years after the VW diesel emissions scandal was uncovered in September 2015 by the California clean air agency, CARB, perceptions have changed in Germany. This report says the charges leveled against the defendants including former CEO include organized commercial fraud and tax evasion. The grounds for this are that thousands of former VW customers were able to claim tax credits in Germany for the vehicle misstated low emissions levels. In Germany organized fraud is subject to up to 10 years in jail. German experts cited here say it is very unlikely that higher management were no aware of the effort to distort emissions results. 

Much has changed in Germany since then. The auto industry has shifted away from diesel to electric cars. German federal government no longer sees Germany's auto industry in the same way that it did in the early years under Merkel.

Berkshire new CEO Greg Abel 2026, Berkshire 2026 stock positions- Apple $60 billion American Express $55 billion Bank of America $25 billion, Coca Cola $25 billion, Chevron $20 billion, Chubb $10 billion. In addition GEICO wholly owned by Berkshire generates about $42 billion yearly in cash from premiums which can be used to invest in companies. By pursuing an affluent demographic American Express gets operating profit margins of 16% and return on equity of about 30%.  Apple has about 27% in net profit margin and 151% in return on equity in 2025. Because of the high affluence demographic of these two companies it offers a strong base for performance for Berkshire. The insurance company GEICO and its reinsurance operations offer a steady stream of cash. This  is the base on which Berkshire has done well over the last two decades. The efficient markets hypothesis moderate form for investors says that publicy available information is reflected in stock prices to a great extent except for anomalies and behavioural aspects. When investors use a basket of 1000 stocks reflecting the economy as Vanguard core index funds, the anomalies and behavioural aspects are less prevalent or cancel each other out creating a strong form of the efficient markets hypothesis in practice for investing discipline. Benjamin Graham, the mentor for all investment leaders would accept this as a way of securing investment gains without the vagaries and uncertainty in selecting stock positions. In 2025 the Berkshire funds achieved 10% gains vs the S&P 500 index which gained 17%, proof that the average investor can do just as well as the so called sage of Omaha, Warren Buffett. ...

The VW emissions scandal lingers on five years after the rigging of of millions of diesel vehicles to cheat emissions tests. Now former CEO Martin Winterkorn is ordered to face trial on charges of defrauding customers. It is interesting to note how it all started was a grandiose ambition set by Winterkorn according to this report in the WSJ, to make VW the largest auto company in the world ahead of Toyota and General Motors and push sales of diesel vehicles in the U.S. with "clean diesel vehicles." At this time of pandemic it is appropriate to note that the world has changed since 1946 when the wages of top managers were 2 times that of a Caterpillar company worker, and reached level of 400 times a worker for some executives of companies before the pandemic.  Even in supposedly egalitarian countries where worker representatives are on boards such as Germany, the wages had pushed way upwards to about 170 times the salary of the average worker at VW in 2015 when the emissions crisis erupted. This VW episode shows that the grandiose ambitions of executives were another part of the problem before the pandemic. Today the VW disaster has led to a completely opposite result. Diesel is not taking over the U.S. it is now the now the no go in Germany, as diesel vehicles are being phased out. Instead Germany's auto industry is now making large investments in the electric car industry. Significantly chancellor Merkel and the CDU no longer see the automobile industry in Germany as having some kind of special status and the shift to electric is being made with the planned loss of jobs and a restructuring to replace lost jobs with other jobs over 10 years. And the SPD has called for a legal ratio of the average ratio of a company's top managers  in relation to a workers wage at the same company. The pandemic has put things in perspective on a number of fronts, from wage relationships, health, healthcare and wellbeing, healthy lifestyles, mental health, making clear that health and a commonsense idea of fairness, good infrastructure, and sensible wage relations all go together in this world that the creator made. ...

The EV strategy of Toyota's new CEO Koji Sato is to make large upfront investments in EV dedicated parts and manufacturing methods. Koji Sato says "We've seen the kinds of EV's we're aiming for. Akio Toyoda of Toyota Motors resisted making a full scale commitment to EV's leading to Toyota falling behind in EV technology, ceding leadership to Chinese, American and German companies. This report in WSJ looks at how this happened. Toyota vehicle sales are declining and VW has overtaken Toyota. Toyoda failed to make a commitment to a date for going all electric and this has led to criticism of his management of the company and seen as resistance to the climate transition to EV's in the automobile industry putting behind the period of fossil fuel driven cars. Toyoda is the grandson of Kiichiro the founder of the company when it was in textiles in the 1920's. He says the the role of CEO is very lonely and very hard, as his early years were spent without the team spirit seen at the top and he was closer to the grassroots. He is now chairman and has given the decisions of the transition to EV's to the new CEO, Mr. Koji Sato.

Intel Board members disagreements on how to run the company 2025. Lip-Bu Tan replaced Pat Gelsinger as CEO only a few months back.  Pat Gelsinger had a close relationship with Biden and also had close relations with VP JD Vance. Lip Bu-Tan has no such relations and is seen by DJT and Senator Cotton as "conflicted" in his ties to China as an early investor in Chinese chipmakers. DJT calls for Tan's immediate resignation as CEO of Intel in 2025. Lip-Bu Tan left the Board a few months before the ouster of Gelsinger. It now appears that the ouster of Gelsinger as Intel's recovery proceeded but only gradually was a poor decision of the Board.  This report also shows an acting head of Intel Yeary recently considering selling of the manufacturing business to TSMC which is a staggering revelation considering that the US is trying to build its own dominant chip making business in the US, which it had ceded to TSMC in Taiwan after inventing the computer chip. ...

The new iX3 will run 497 miles on a single charge and shows BMW's effort to reinvent the car from the ground up says it's CEO. Mercedes electric GLC will run for 457 miles on a single charge, competing at $80,000 with the Model Y of Tesla which does 387 miles at over $60,000. Mercedes GLC price is still to be decided. Tesla has lost a third of it's market volume in the European market. The newer versions of Mercedes and BMW join VW's own models that compete at the lower end of the price range which today is close to $30,000-$40,000. Earlier reports in WSJ show the German models are competing for dominant share in Europe.

The head of VW's truck operations Mr. Heinzmann will assume the new position on the management board overseeing Chinese operations. The head of the Chinese operations, Mr Neumann, was earlier expected to take this position, but will now be given another assignment. The expansion plans of VW will add more competition into the US market which is declining. Martin Winterkorn ran VW's Audi business. He became VW's new CEO this year and brings a new leadership perspective to his job. He has several new strategies. In the area of pricing he wants to reduce unneeded features such as external mirrors that fold inward for narrow European streets, and bring down the price of VW Jetta and Passat models to be competitive with Toyota's Corolla and Camry models. Currently a Jetta is $17,000, a Corolla is $ 15,200 and a Passat is $23900 compared to a Camry at $20,000. VW's plans are to set a sales target of 1 million cars by 2018, tripling sales in ten years from the current 330,000 vehicles. In the next 3 years to 2010 sales world wide are expected to increase by 12 to 15%, VW wants to capture a bigger share by seeing its sales increase by 30% from the six million units today to 8 million units by 2010. Winterkorn sees this as possible given that VW has a more centralized management structure now which makes for quicker decisions. VW is also working on a new family of small fuel efficient cars on a common platform to be sold in China, India and other markets where a small car will be popular. Winterkorn referred to its new concept car as an example of the direction this would take. As importing cars from Europe is becoming costlier with the strong euro and the Japanese in contrast have the advantage of a weaker yen, the expansion plans will require lower pricing. VW looks to build a plant in the USA. Another strategy is to add 12 new models to its global product line and to launch more new vehicles in new product segments. This is what Winterkorn thinks has given Toyota its increased sales. A new compact SUV caled the Tiguan will be introduced. What all this means is that VW is seeking to move buyers of Japanese and American cars to try German cars, make German cars cost less and make a strong showing in the American and global markets. ...

Stefan Jacoby, a former head of VW USA, will be the new CEO of Volvo, after its acquisition with 100% ownership by Geely of China. Geely paid $1.3 billion cash for Volvo to Ford Motor, the original price was $1.8 billion but adjustments were made for retirement funds and working capital. Ford originally acquired Volvo for $6 billion. Ford has debt of $27 billion and will be able to reduce some of this debt wit cash from the Volvo sale.

Chinese car company Shuanghuan's CEO was on display at the Franfurt auto show. Its rear looks like a BMW X5 and BMW has charged that it copied the X5 and filed suit to prevent it from being marketed in Germany. Shuanghuan also has a minicar that is called Noble which looks like the Daimler's Smart minicar. Daimler also is taking legal action to prevent the marketing of the Noble in Germany. Only the X5 was shown at the Frankfurt Auto show getting criticism from Reithofer who is head of BMW. Critics say that the Chinese actually have borrowed from several car designs and from different aspects such as the interior aand exterior of different brands,thus the X5 is seen as borrowing from the front of a Toyota Land Cruiser and the rear of a BMW X5. The price difference is huge 29,000 euros for the CEO vs 59,000 euros for a X5. Currently the Chinese are struggling with safety issues in their cars by makers such as Brilliance and the Landwind. Both cars did badly in tests conducted by the German automobile club ADAC. Landwind's model is being retooled for safety while the Brilliance which has a collaboration with BMW for the Chinese market presented a new subcompact the BS2 as an alternative to the VW Golf....
