Billie Jean King whose effort and persistence created the game of Women's Tennis, is alive and well with some words of encouragement, advice. Billie Jean King Commencement address at California State University Los Angeles, where she graduates in history in 2026, sixty two years after letting go college to play tennis. She grew up in Long Beach, with her brother, her parents a fireman who played basketball and a mother who was a teacher. For those who remember she comes from the period of Arthur Ashe, Stan Smith and in Australia Rod Laver, in the seventies. Stadiums are named after her at the US Open Tennis championships, and it was Billie Jean who helped create women's tennis. Some of her advice- "We can never understand inclusion unless we have been excluded." (the first African American player Althea Gibsen is celebrated in a postage stamp yet African Americans barely made it into the sport during her time. Billie Jean asked why it was all white dress, white people, white clubs.) "I like completing things. Finish what I started." (Sixty two years after postponing college in 1962 Bille Jean completes her history degree at Cal State LA in 1986). Billie Jean in another interview says history is so important and the only way to effect change that is good is to know what happened before and why. This is true for another pioneer for women a law student at Stanford named Sandra Day O'Connor of Arizona ranch territory that in those days stretched endlessly on all sides. Gandhi would agree. Few remember it today, yet there was a period of players during the Ken Rosewall-Rod Laver period of the sixties and seventies that the lob and the drop shot were what made tennis exciting and fun. Ilie Nastase, a Romanian player of that time was adept at the drop shot and lob. Kurt Streeter of the NYT looks at the game of Spanish player Alcaraz and his frequent use of drop shots even from a distance that are taking tennis back to that era. In the woman's game Tunisian player Jabeur is also known for the drop shot. Marshmallows is a.k.a. for drop shots.

Agassi suggests living in the present and avoiding future tripping thinking and solving problems for the future which may not exist. Agassi describes his daily routine. He says pickleball is a great way to exercise without thinking of exercise especially for over 50's. Agassi works for 3-4 hours a day and then plans his daily life around this. He loves the way Alcaraz, Sinner and Medvedev have brought new life into tennis as an exciting game to watch. Agassi talks about marraige- he is married to Steffani Graf, who also played tennis in the top ten. He says know yourself and you can't come into a relationship needing the other to be complete.  For breakfast he has oatmeal with protein or some granola and fruit. Less well known is that Andre Agassi is from Las Vegas, and has a thoughtful autobiography "Open" that is remarkably honest about his survival in the competitive world of tennis after many struggles with parental pressure to win. Yet he comes through having made his own choices. He started the preparatory Agassi Tennis academy for underprivileged children. When Sinner won the Australian Open yesterday he thanked his parents for not putting pressure on him for letting him try different sports. ...

Wang threw his racket into the photographers area after winning not realizing what he was doing. Because table tennis is all about margins, such a precise sport, the loss of even 1% can affect performance. Wong lost to a Swedish player in the game that followed.

A vocal advocate for women in tennis, Andy Murray of Britain, plans to retire in 2019 after chronic hip pain. Murray was a strong supporter of women in the game and an ally for the WTA Tour where women feel underappreciated compared to men in tennis.

Naomi Osaka, the U.S. Open champion found a new hitting partner in Andy Murray in Bribane, Australia recently. Murrray was taught tennis by his mother Judy. He was the first to hire a women's coach Amelie Mauresmo to his team in 2014. Among those who admire Murray is Billie Jean King, who helped establish women's tennis in the seventies. A first round loss at the Australian Open to Bautista Agut has led to Murray considering retirement.

Her game incudes a sports psychologist which helps her with the toughness needed in the game, and she has supported athletes for Mental Health Day. She is a keen reader which helps her relax, listens to some music to get her going before games, and likes polish recipe pasta with strawberries. She lives in Raszyn, a suburb of Warsaw. Her entry into the sport of tennis was for following her older sister who retired after injuries at the age of 15.  Her father is a rower who competed in the 1988 Seoul Olympics and wanted his daughters to join an individual sport, and her mother an orthodontist.

Djokovic suffered a miniscus tear injury in the game against Greek player Stefanos Tsitsipas at the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics singles tennis. He appeared to be very worried for his game Friday evening at 7 pm against Italy's Musetti saying:

“I’m concerned about the state of the knee. I cannot give you exact information because I don’t have it,” he said.

“I have to go and examine the knee now with my physio and with the medical staff of the tournament and then let’s see, I’m playing at seven tomorrow which gives me slightly more time, but I’m hoping I can be ready"

Take up exercize he says to a generation of men that have just become lazy when it comes to exercize. Other things to be stronger with the virus are healthy eating habits, lots of ancient grains, lentils, fruits and vegetables. Add  yoga, meditation, call it mindfulness if you like, it works, and it is never too late.

What this tennis report is not saying is that only a generation ago the drop shot was standard and a key part of the game. The base line hitters era is now gone as player after player from Europe is shifting to the way tennis was always played with a great mix of shots. This drop shot or the related shot the lob was normal when Ile Nastase, Newcombe, Rosewall and Laver played in the 1970's and 1980's, games this reviewer watched late into the night at tennis tournaments in the US and Canada. It was because of the range of strokes that tennis was fun to watch and became popular at the time. The reason is that drop shots, lobs, take skills, timing, mixing shots with speed and with touches, and requiring a keen sense of the flow.
