Media headlines focused on Xi's statements on Taiwan. China is concerned that US not recognize Taiwan independence, but not much beyond that. China puts Iran much lower on the list of issues it considers important. It appears that China first priority is to be accepted as an equal partner with the US as a superpower. That is Xi's goal in this trip. Issues of Hormuz and Iran not something China considers important. China has an interest in a non-nuclear Iran, in no nuclear weapons proliferation. As the US has made this a priority China prefers to be not vocal on this issue, as it relies on the US to see this is done. A secondary priority for China is to have the US agree that China could continue to import from the Hormuz Straits to met its oil needs. As China has relations with Arab states it is carefully balancing this with relations with Iran. What does this mean? It means China and US are in considerable agreement on the current situation in the Gulf region and in the Middle East. China sees beyond Iran, so does the US. Both countries are focused on the future - on reindustrialization in the US and China on the next phase in its industrialization. New countries and blocs are also emerging that will rival China and the US- India/Japan and the European Union under leadership of Germany and France. These four countries or blocs are all thinking of the world beyond a failed Middle East- the economic issues they face and how best to tackle them, and the issues relating to borders and security, how best to tackle them. ...

It says for decades during which China modernized its economy with US investment and technology, Chinese policy remained peaceful reunification and no set date. He says in Tokyo during his Asian trip that China "was flirting with danger" through its aggressive posture on Taiwan. President Biden made his remarks during a press conference with prime minister Fumio Kishida of Japan in Tokyo. This is what the BBC says about his remarks-  The US president began the press conference by directly linking the China-Taiwan situation to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, saying that the Russian president was "attempting to eliminate the identity of Ukraine." If there was rapprochement eventually between Ukraine and Russia and sanctions were not sustained, "then what does this signal to China about the costs of attempting to take Taiwan by force?" "They are flirting with danger already by flying so close and all the manoeuvres they are undertaking," Biden said, referring to increasing reports of Chinese warplane incursions into Taiwanese airspace. This suggests that the Asian trip of president Biden is bringing with it America's new Asia policy of building strong economic and defense partnerships in Asia. The US president also looks beyond today's conflict in Ukraine to an eventual rapprochement and end of sanctions as a possible scenario in Europe, and sees Asia as the region for America to build new supply chains that strengthen America and its partners, with a new partnership being formed with India, Indonesia and Vietnam, and with other ASEAN nations. In a way Biden and Republicans see the challenge from emerging powers in Asia as similar to the one from Japan in the thirties and the eighties, to be met with the combined economic strength of the US and Europe.  ...

When the coronavirus spread in China it was expected that Taiwan would be affected badly. Yet Taiwan has managed the situation in a number of ways that has limited cases to 50. Health experts attribute this to quick preparation and early intervention. After the 2002 and 2003 SARS epidemic Taiwan setup the National Health Command Center (NHCC) to combine resources for managing a health crisis. This was to prepare for the next crisis. Taiwan acted early imposing a ban on travel to China, Macau and Hong Kong, and a ban on the exporting of surgical masks to keep a stockpile in Taiwan.  Taiwanese government integrated data from national health insurance with immigration and customs data. A program was developed  that allowed people to report travel histories and symptoms by scanning a QR code when they arrive in Taiwan. Travelers receive a text message with their health status that allows customs officers to focus on the ones requiring attention. The public's willingness to follow government regulation is now much higher after the difficulties caused by the SARS crisis. This makes them willing to follow more readily action taken by the government, as SARS memory is still fresh in their minds. Investments in public health systems and in biomedical research is much further advanced than in other countries. A research team at Academia Sinica has developed antibodies that can identify the protein that causes coronavirus, The aim is to shorten the test time for diagnosis to 20 minutes. The lead researcher Yang says the next step is to validate it before turning out a rapid test kit. ...

The countries of Central and Eastern Europe are building closer relations with Taiwan. Central European and Eastern European countries trade less with China and see close relations with the US as essential for their security. This includes Poland, Slovakia, Lithuania, Czech Republic.
