Beyond the waste of natural gas when it is flared in areas lacking ways to store and transport small amounts of gas there is the issue of environmental degradation. Large quantities of natural gas in the Permian basin and North Dakota are simply burned to make way for oil production. It is simply uneconomical to transport it to users. Yet this is an issue not just of waste but of the environment too. Flaring of natural gas near oil wells is causing 1% of global greenhouse gas emissions, say experts. 

In places like Iraq this is a problem because of frequent power shortages in the country. Russia, Iran, Iraq and the U.S burn the natural gas near oil wells that is equivalent to the gas used in France, Germany, Belgium combined. In eastern Siberia or in the Sahara desert, North Dakota,  this is in the wilderness areas far from end markets.

This report in DW.com shows pictures and podcasts from Africa's National Parks and Wildlife Centers. Africa's tourism industry brings in billions of dollars from international visitors with each traveler bringing in about $7000 to the local economy. Most affected are hotels, tour companies and small business. There is a sense that government could do more to protect small business in Uganda, Kenya,Tanzania, South Africa, Ghana and other countries. Also being considered is finding ways to shift focus from high paying foreign tourists to a a larger local visitor population in African countries. Today Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, Amboseli National Park in Kenya at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Kruger National Park in South Africa, Victoria Falls National Park in Zimbabwe, Sanganeb Marine National Park in Sudan, and Tassili n'Ajjer National Park in Algeria with Tuareg nomads in the desert deep in the Sahara, are some of the National Parks with few international visitors. Local are working in alternative occupations. There is a sense that a better focus would be to a less paying but dependable tourist influx from within African countries.  ...

Jean-Marie Le Clezio is hailed as "author of new departures, explorer of humanity beyond and below the reigning civilization," by the Swedish Academy. This Frenchman loved to explore foreign cultures from North African immigrants in France to native Indians in Mexico and islanders in the Indian ocean. He wins the Nobel Prize for Literature for 2008. His novels include "Desert," about a Sahara woman and her encounters with European civilization, the "Prospector," and others. Le Clezio's novel "Onitsha," is based in Nigeria during the British colonial period. His father was a British doctor with connections to Mauritius where he also lived. He was born in Nice and studied at Bristol university in the UK and spent a year in Nigeria. He now spends time between Nice, Mauritius, and Albuquerque.
