Galston acknowledges that Baltimore is 63% black, and Pittsburgh 26%, yet race is not the only factor, and Galston points out the need for Baltimore to work diligently to build on its educational and medical technology assets to build a new future for the city.

City authorites are bulldozing vacant lots in Chicago, Pittsburgh and Detroit. Hundreds of vacant lots can be a problem for cities. Clearing these vacant lots is the first step to building new housing that is badly needed today. Detroit's population has fallen by two thirds, Pittsburgh by half, and Chicago by a quarter since 1950's. Detroit's land bank holds 63,000 vacant lots, Pittsburgh has 13,000 city owned lots being transferred to a land bank. Chicago has 10,000 vacant lots and 16,000 lots caught in a mess of unpaid taxes and unpaid fees. The city is working on new laws to speed up the clearing and development of these lots. Many are in Black and Latino neighborhoods once known to be redlined, meaning the banks denied the places mortgages and speculators engaged in blockbusting to sell declining white neighborhoods from the shift to suburbs to black people.

David Muir and Linsey Davis maybe remembered in history for setting the record straight for the first time in 9 long years as they corrected every false statement or exaggeration in the Pittsburgh Harris Trump television debate. NYT reports Trump stated that a governor had supported killing of babies. Linsey Davis- “There is no state in this country where it is legal to kill a baby after it’s born.”  Trump painted a portrait of an America besieged by migrant crime. David Muir- “As you know, the F.B.I. says overall violent crime is coming down in this country.” Time and again during the debate Linsey Davis and David Muir corrected misstatement of facts. Something amazingly- and a huge comment on the way reporting has been practiced in America on its very real problems and opportunity, on its frustrations and its possibilities- that amazingly had never happened till September 10 in Pittsburgh. Global literacy, cultural literacy in America, can only grow and thrive when statements are made by correct observation as in a society based on science and technology. ...

Duncan Moore of the University of Rochester points out what makes Pittsburgh, San Diego and Rochester different from Detroit, Cleveland and Fresno. The investment in the local community, large universities and the research money they bring in, the small businesses using advanced technologies and connecting with the universities, have helped these communities thrive even when a dominant employer or a dominant business has suffered decline. Harris will propose help for seniors for homecare, living at home, funding it with Medicare cost improvements in cost of pharmaceuticals it pays out. The benefit will cover cost of home health care services including home health aides.

About 105 million Americans or 40% of Americans currently provide unpaid childcare. Harris proposed $6000 child tax credit for parents of newborns. And 25% of Americans are also caring for aging parents as well and bearing this cost as well when they have children.
