How Hiroshi Harunari is changing the way Mitsubishi is doing business. He personally answers emails from employees and dealers from 7 to 9 am every day to know what frustrated employees and dealers are thinking and have to deal with. He flies into Dallas and personally drives an Outlander to dealers in Dallas, San Antonio, Austin and other cities to talk to them and listen to what they are struggling with and what their customers are telling them. In 2 months in early 2006 his first 2 months on the job, Hiroshi visited 139 Mitsubishi dealerships in 29 states. He has launched a dealer co-op program to help dealers with advertising (as dealers had suggested) and Mitsubishi uses an upbeat advertising slogan " the next 25 years begin today" suggesting a completely new way of doing things. Hiroshi came from the Mitsubishi Group which financed struggling Mitsubishi Motors with $3 billion infusion after Daimler Chrysler pulled out in 1995. As part of the new plan for Mitsubishi it decided to get out of the old situation where younger drivers with bad credit had been targeted resulting in bad consumer loan losses. It now targeted more financially able customers with the Lancer sedan. It had Merrill Lynch do the financing of customer loans. For the year ending March 31, 2007 Misubishi sold 124,000 cars up 8% over the previous year with sales at dealerships increasing 24%, reversing a 4 year decline in sales, and pulling Mitsubishi USA to a $5 million profit. In 2005 Mitsubishi had lost nearly $2 billion so its quite a reversal. Hiroshi says he had to show that he was ready to pick up the chestnut from the flames, that he had the courage and energy to go out and listen to hundreds of dealers and customers and employees in 29 states in the USA and act immediately to satisfy their concerns. ...

Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp. announces a test flight of the Mitsubishi Regional Jet for the second quarter of 2015. The plane seats 76-88 passengers and is designed for short haul flights. Deliveries would begin in 2017. This is Japan's effort to develop its aircraft industry. Mitsubishi has 375 orders. Bombardier of Canada and Embraer of Brazil dominate this segment of the market in a duopoly. Embraer is expected to retain its 61% of the market and Mitsubishi is likely to take 22% on the market for No. 2, with 4000 deliveries in the period 2017-2033, according to analysts. Shareholders in the company include Japan Development Bank and Toyota Motor.

Saving the deal between Mitsubishi UFJ bank and Morgan Stanley, done over the weekend, is huge in the dimensions this could have taken in unsettling financial and credit markets at this fragile stage, and sending all the wrong signals after the collapse of Lehman caused a tightening in credit markets. Its a remarkable effort by Treasury and the Japanese government and Mitsubishi UFJ to get a workable deal negotiated and ready for markets by Sunday. This makes for an infusion of $9 billion into Morgan Stanley by Mitsubishi UFJ and gives Mitsubishi UFJ decent terms on which to make the investment. The presence of the Japanese and American governments at the table made for extrarordinary precautions that nothing is left to chance and the details are worked out to a successful conclusion for Monday opening of markets. This is how global coordination is supposed to work and at no time was it more needed than after the Lehman collapse. An agreement with Treasury that Mitsubishi UFJ would be protected by the American government in the event that Treasury had to put money into Morgan Stanley and shareholders would lose the value of their investment. Second Mitsubishi wold get 10% dividend not on aportion of its investment but on its entire $9 billion investment, reminiscent of the Buffett deal, and is good for Mitsubishi. Electric cars have perfomed well in disaster hit regions of Japan after the earthquake, when oil refineries and gasoline stations were out of operation. 89 Mitsubishi i-MiEVs were put to use in Miyagi, Fukushima and Iwate prefectures. They were perfect for Sendai say city officials. The cars were driven an average of 30-45 miles a day in Sendai, which is half the distance for a full charge. Each night they were returned to city hall and recharged using 220 volt outlets. Fast recharging stations which replenish batteries to 80% of capacity in 30 minutes were used. The standard 100 volt outlets take 12 hours. This performance should speed up the timetable for electric car development in Japan.
