Of the $2 billion it cost to build the new 22 kms Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL) bridge between the island city and the mainland at Navi Mumbai, 85% is funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency. This is one of the many infrastructural improvements including the Metro being undertaken in Mumbai today that will completely transform the city.

The 90,000 tons of steel and the technological improvements to handle cyclone winds in the Bay of Mumbai, the proximity to the Tarapur nuclear station, and the oil pipelines in the sea, are all part of the engineering that went into building the MTHL bridge in Mumbai. 16 of the 22 kilometres are over the sea. The bridge is built to last 100 years.

The 22 kilometre Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) opens today. It is India's longest sea bridge. 170,000 tons of steel went into the bridge which involved digging into the seabed 40 metres down to support large girders. It starts in Sewri and ends in Raigad in Navi Mumbai.The sealink is 16.5 kms and the two land viaducts at both sides 5.5 kms. Built at a cost of 21.2 thousand crores rupees of which 15.1 thousand crores or 70% comes from the Japan International Cooperation Agency. Construction and engineering was done by Ishikawajima Harima Heavy Industries, Daewoo, and Indian companies Tata Projects, Larsen & Toubro, bringing together Japanese, Korean and Indian expertise for new projects of this type to be built by 2030. It cuts commuter time by 45 minutes and brings better access to the airports and ports in the area of Mumbai, and to cities in the southern part of the country including Pune.

It also helps these firms get a new start. Preservation also works here through keeping what was good in these firms, which are the employees who had no part in management's mistakes, and workers who may be just as badly trapped in union ways. PC's sales and broadband connections havent taken off the way mobiles have in India. Its not clear whay. Its too early to tell , its possible the sales are just beginning to pick up and sales growth is already faster than China's on a smaller base. Rajesh Jain and Prof Jhunjhunwala at the IIT Chennai have come up with a device the netPC which uses a new computing concept which wil use dowloadable software over internet connections. It will cost 2000 rupees and a monthly fee of Rs 400. A monitor is Rs 3000 extra. This device will use wireline connections and is supported by MTNL a stateowned operator of fixed lines.
