Less advertised, less well known players are making their way, and this may be a good thing as the advertising has gone overboard. Companies were pouring money into these ads turning the  players into constant presence in ads and creating an atmosphere that is not healthy for soccer as a sport. One just hopes France's Mbappe with his humility and quiet demeanor doesn't get into one more noisy ad on television like the others. Is Christiano Ronaldo, the little kid from Madeira, Portugal, coming out of nowhere at that time, a billionaire? Is Messi also from remote town of Rosario, Santa Fe province, Argentina, a billionaire? This doesn't do much for the sport. Germany's best goal scorer in this World Cup only dreamed of not having to do two jobs, and having a steady career, after struggling for a long period. There is something in this World Cup that has brought previously unknown players from unknown places like Cabo Verde to the forefront on world television, including the Egyptian and Moroccan players, the players from other smaller countries. Even the English players in the Premier League playing for England look good by comparison. ...

Norway 2-1 against Brazil World Cup Soccer to enter round of 16 with 2 Haaland goals. Brazil failed to impress as Norway had most of the ball possession. Norway's goalkeeper Hyland made 4 brilliant saves to make it difficult for Brazil to score. Brazil's one goal came in the 98th minute when a Norwegian player was given a yellow card for elbowing a Brazilian player and Neymar made a penalty kick. Without that Brazil would have lost 2-0 after Haaland scored twice. Brazilian player Vinicius Jr. was hailed in the media but could do little, and Carlo Ancelotti as coach could not come up with any ideas to change the game. The entire World Cup in 2026 is different because of the way smaller nations have played. Nations such as Cabo Verde have held firm, Germany was defeated by Paraguay, Italy did not even make it to the round of 32 losing to Bosnia. The loss of Brazil leaves only France with Mbappe, Argentina with Messi, and England with Kane standing. US faces Belgium on Monday July 6, 2026. Argentina barely stayed on when Messi scored in overtime against Cabo Verde, nearly losing. Only the French team has played consistently. Spain meets Portugal on Monday. Luis Enrique has given PSG a new mentality compared to star centric days when Mbappe, Neymar, Messi played at PSG when team play was secondary.  Luis Enrique says about the game that he"decided a long time ago to stay calm and try to enjoy it because you need luck to win on penalties. I think we were great in terms of the quality of our kicks and also the goalkeeper. It’s amazing [to retain the Champions League]. Maybe today both teams deserved to win, but the way we played the whole season, I think we deserve it. We’ll try to do it again next year. Why not? The match started in the best way for them, scoring after a lucky action. German national soccer team coach Joachim Low has used 7 different defenders in the last 3 games as he tries to find a winning formula after replacing Hummels and Boateng, says this report in DW.com. He also replaced Thomas Muller and it will take some time before the German national team coach can find the new younger players to replace the old ones. This approach is not unique to Joachim Low alone as other national teams are also looking for younger players. The Spanish national team and the Portuguese national team have many younger players in an effort to bring new faces to the game who excel at soccer. Younger German players being called to play on the national team include Philipp Max, Robin Gosens, Nico Schulz, Mahmoud Dahoud, Nadiem Amiri, Florian Neuhaus, Jonas Hofmann. The only way to play other national teams who are bringing in younger players is for Low to tap into younger talent in Germany and let the process bring results.

Arminia Bielefield is one of Germany's well known soccer teams today. One cannot say it is a unknown town. I took a picture of the stadium and the passionate soccer fans on a major television station on German television just yesterday. It is in North Rhine Westphalia, and like other German teams in the Bundesliga has a whole soccer fan culture behind its stadium, the city and its surrounding areas, that one can only find in Germany. Entire families different generations grow up attending and cheering for their team.

The German approach to soccer with fans running the sport is seen with envy in Britain, Italy and Spain, now that the Super League plan to split off the richer well known teams into a Super League has failed miserably. It did not last 48 hours before the organizers, a Liverpool billionaire and others apologized. Fans were angry that the clubs built into their local communities in London, Manchester and other British cities were being taken away from them. Noteworthy is that German teams and French teams at the top of world soccer never joined in the Super League plan. In fact Borussia Dortmund made a vigorous protest. Bayern Munich stayed out, so did Paris St Germain. Klopp and Guardiola were the first to protest. In this report Uli Hesse of The Guardian tells us why German clubs are rooted in their communities. German clubs started as amateur clubs run by volunteers and remained that way till some professionalism was brought in by 1963. The communities and fans are very much a part of German clubs, which are not seen as part of the larger entertainment industry as in the US and Britain. The clubs are still run as part of the communities and fans in the local area. There are some Austrian entrepreneurs, but owned by locals and fans, and nothing like what is happening in the British or American approach to soccer. Most of the clubs were set up in Germany to support multiple sports in their communities. So that track and field was part of Dortmund, and chess was part of Bayern Munich Club sports. After the disaster with the fans British prime minister Boris Johnson has called for a review, and this includes bringing back the original spirit of the sport as community based and owned by fans or the local community, not business interests and billionaires from outside. ...

Coach Joachim Low's strategy for his players of sitting deep in his half so as to remove the possibility of inviting space backfired says DW.com. Toni Kroos of Real Madrid team who was one of the few seasoned players on a new team for Germany put together by Low, says that they tried both being more aggressive in the second half after sitting deep in the first half, and both approaches failed. The Spanish team was well coordinated, faster and tougher throughout the game.  At key moments the Germany defenders were nowhere near the Spanish players as they moved the ball one way and quickly the opposite way the next moment. Ferran scored a hat trick with 3 goals and some of his goal kicks were very quick and fast. As it says here Ferran reacted faster than anyone to score. In three consecutive moments Germany was slow to react to the speed of the Spanish players. For most of the game the Spanish players controlled the ball with pinpoint passing in the midst of many of the German players. It was not that Neuer the German goal keeper was not quick enough, he was beaten by the speed and angles, and the movement of the ball from different directions with Spain's rapid passing. For Spain Ramos, Morata, Ferran, Koke and Rodrigo, Olmo, played a critical role with a German team not looking like this since the 1930's, even though coach Joachim Low had put together a new German team. This could be a formative moment for Germany and coach Joachim Low as the German team looks for its form that eluded it completely this time.  ...

Under the 50+1 rule, a German Football League regulation, club members retain majority voting rights in an outsourced company that runs its football team. This gives it a genuine local presence and is why German clubs have opposed the Super League of just a few star teams playing each other. The Guardian gives this story of Raheem growing up in a difficult neighborhood in Kingston, Jamaica. His mother, a nurse, moved to London after losing his father to gang violence. There he played for teams before he was 14, then moving to Liverpool Club, in the north of England. He showed real determination at an early age, and concern for kids growing up near Wembley stadium where he once lived, who had no chance to watch soccer or participate in the game.

Germany - France quarterfinals UEFA soccer 2025 1-1 Germany winning on penalties. With great saves, about 9 before penalty kicks, and one save of an own goal towards the end from German goal keeper Ann Katrin-Berger. Also part of the game was a puzzling hair pull by a German player of the French captain in front of all the cameras and the stadium that led to apenalty that France converted. In this unusual game there were 2 French goals that were called offside by the umpires. The German game involved more physicality with many fouls and injured players. Though the possession was very one sided France having possession about 70% of the time and many attempts by French players at the German goal, somehow the German team's defense held together without it's  red carded player.

Christian Seifert, chief executive of the German Football League acted quickly to get the Bundesliga played by teams in empty soccer stadiums but reaching millions on televsion. Following the example of the Bundesliga which started with games on May 16, the La Liga in Spain starts on June 11, and the Premier League in Britain on June 17. Two rounds of play are done and seven more to go for Bundesliga. Even the sounds of fans were brought back for television. Bayern Munich played Borussia Dortmund in  1-0 game that brought the old games and rivalries back to life for sports fans on television. Seifert says he was just doing his job. It helped that the German health infrastructure was good and handled the coronavirus well, making it possible for sports not to be seen as a potential burden for hospitals. The empty stadiums- all the teams and team fans accepted this. It wasn't that some teams had different views on how to proceed. A $300 million broadcast rights payment was one more incentive to get going and still be safe by keeping the stadiums empty-  and everybody calmly accepting that as a necessary aspect of the modified way for 2020. You could still enjoy the game and be thankful you could - on television. ...

The best performance for "hanging in there and self-belief" goes to Robin Gosens of Germany who scored one goal and two assists in the all important 4-2 win against Portugal.

Mario Balotelli, the soccer star who played for Marseille decides to go back to his hometown of Brescia, Italy. Along the way turning down offers to play for Flamengo in Brazil or impossible sums of money for playing on a Chinese team. His mother cried when she heard that he was coming back. He was once the only black player on the Italian team when he scored the winning goal against a stunned German team by going from one end of the field to the other. 

His offer from Brescia is 4.4 million dollars but that was enough for him to come home, accepting the offer at once. Even while playing for Milan he preferred to commute the distance and stay in Brescia. 

He will no longer be alone as the only black player on the soccer field. Brexcia is now extracommunitaria as they say in Italy, a multicultural city with 19% of its citizens from other backgrounds. Many players from West Africa are now playing in the Italian league.
