The result is that Congress has less credibility and poor approval ratings with the public than ever. US Congress has disapproval rating of 90%, only 10% approve of its conduct and performance. Changes at CBS News and CNN News to better reflect news events. CNN is considering an offer from Paramount that improves on an offer from Netflix.  This would change the editorial content of the site. Polarization in one direction supports polarized thinking in the other direction when what is needed is free and honest, fair reporting of people and events. This leads to people constantly exposed to only one side of the story, which makes running a country more difficult, and leads to all sorts of distortions in policy that hurt the public interest and the national interest. It is not only about profit because reporting is how people get news and analysis of events, which determine what policies are taken up by the nation, leading to good or bad results or very good and very bad results.

As Mayor he put the bus and transport system back under government control and built the Bee Network, which is one of his success stories in Manchester. One year after the tax cut analysis shows the effects were muted and most of the increase in business investment comes from the drop in energy prices. The U.S. economy grew 3% in 2018. The tax cut lowered the corporate tax rate to 21% from 35% and cut rates for closely held businesses. Analysis shows investment growth picking up from trends in 2016 and 2017.

The U.S. makes its first interest rate cut since 2008. The U.S. central bank, the Federal Reserve cut interest rates by a quarter percentage point on July 30 2019. For seven years after the financial crisis of 2009 the U.S. central bank cut rates to generate business investment confidence and initially to prevent a deep crash in stock markets. In making this cut the U.S. is now a follower of the European central bank which is cutting rates to stimulate the economy. The U.S. does not want to see too much divergence with European interest rates which are showing negative yields and the U.S. at about 2.25% putting the U.S. with a disadvantage in trade from a stronger currency that results from higher rates. That crisis was a result of poor lending by banks in an irrational search for profits that never materialized. It ended up hurting the savings of ordinary Americans who earned close to zero on savings accounts. A similar pattern was seen in Britain and the European Union, resulting in a loss of confidence of working class voters in the established political parties and the emergence of Trump in the U.S., UKIP in Britain, AfD in Germany and the National Front in France.  ...

At a time when the Ukraine war has hurt poor countries Germany plans to cut its development aid by 12% in its draft budget. The budget is expected to shrink to 10.8 billion euros at a time when defense budget is increased to 50 billion euros. The boost to defense is a result of the war in Ukraine. Germany is also set to cut its contribution to the World Food Programme by 50% to 28 million euros. Russia and Ukraine supply wheat, cereals to poor countries. High energy prices also affect these countries.

Greg Ip of the WSJ cautions about thinking that the GDP growth of 3% is likely to be achieved with the Trump plan for a corporate tax rate of 15%. He says evidence from Britain and Canada- Britain reducing the tax rate from 30% in 2007 to 19% today, and Canada from 28% in 2000 to 21% in 2004- is disappointing. In Britain the increase in GDP averaged about 0.1% a year. Business investment increases with cut in corporate taxes, and the U.S. corporate tax rate is higher than other advanced countries such as Germany, yet GDP growth includes other factors, such as the business cycle, demographics, productivity growth, aging, technology, regulation, says Ip. It is better if the tax cuts are spread broadly over the population, and tax cuts are offset to a greater extent by savings in other areas, and that tax cuts promote productivity boosting investment, to create enough of a surge in growth above 2%.
