The title of this BBC report is a misnomer as the content of the report is that India and the US are actively negotiating a Trade Agreement after some disagreements on Indian oil purchases from Russia bumped up from 2% before 2019 to about one third to 40% of its imports by 2024. This is being rapidly reversed and some estimates by consultants CLSA show India only made $2-3 billion from Russian discounted oil sales, a miniscule amount. On American interest in agricultural exports India can take in some products other than grain which it sees as important to feed 1 billion people and food security.  DJT says the "special relationship" between India and the US is important, and says "there's nothing to worry about. We just have moments on occasion". India has much bigger stakes in trade with the US. In fact it's growth into the third largest economy in the world means doubling or tripling its trade with the US and the European Union in the next few years. This would narrow the difference in GDP and per capita between India and China, as India and China started at the same GDP and per capita in 1950. Only in 1990 with China's trade with the US has the Chinese GDP and per capita income increased to create the huge gap with India. ...

The campaign in German schools "Smart ohne phone" or "Smart without a phone"  for school children in 2025. One student at Dalton High School in Alsdorf, North Rhine Westphalia, Klara Ptak, is cited in this report by  Oliver Pieper in DW.com. Klara 17 years old says- "A total of 51 phones were seized — that's a fairly significant number considering we have 700 students. And you can really see a difference, especially in the younger kids. They used to stand around in a circle staring at their screens, and now they are playing football, badminton, or board games together. It's a dramatic shift." A survey by the Körber Foundation, and pollster Forsa, says that parents of children ages 12 to 18 complain that their children's time spent on social media is out of control and is their leading source of stress. The German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina is for banning phones upto tenth grade, it wants to keep children under 13 away from the internet for social media completely. It is interesting to note that the younger student are fine with it and adapted quickly seeing the benefits. This shows that a new generation of student can be trained for a different lifestyle. Today in the Washington Post Linda McMahon and RFK Jr. team up on an article saying just this that time spent on screens lifestyles along with nutrition and food fail school children badly, reminding people about the saying in Latin since the 2nd Century by poet Juvenal -"a healthy mind in a healthy body." Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin on Harvard, Columbia and other US universities dependent on full tution of foreign students to where they make up 30-40% of students, highly disproportionate to the American student population, which the author says funds the universities expanding buildings and bureaucracy. It means fewer opportunities for the American student population at the Nation's universities. An hidden aspect of this is that at the upper tier and upper middle tier of universities in the US this helps support rapid increase in the tution fees to levels not seen in two generations, making even upper middle class families with incomes over $200,000 a year find it hard to save for several children at such schools. It imposes an unnecessary and stiff burden on parents in the upper middle class. At the middle level of middle class incomes of $100,000-$150,000 the general inflationary trend for college tution puts these universities also in the range where the middle class can barely access them- cost of $30,000 a year over 4 years adding upto $120,000 and total of $360,000 for 3 children households. Basically universities have become an entrenched system operating in the interests of their own operations now in conflict with what is good for the Nation. ...

Most agree that American students deserve the same opportunities. And the Duke Quantum lab seems to say Americans are not also part of the best and brightest and so do not deserve the same opportunities, looking only at his own lab in 2025 not America as a whole, and ignoring the history of science and invention since 1600 where European and American scientists built the Modern World.

Healthy nutrition including the kinds of natural foods such as fruits, vegetables and ancient grains and getting fast foods and chemicals out of our food, and healthy exercise, participation in sports are a better way to approach mental health, and for the backward looking side of tech a no cell phones in schools rule. Screen and social media addiction, indoor lifestyles, and food with harmful ingredients are the true source of our children's mental health problems and should be treated as the culprits, say McMahon and RFK Jr.  ...

Shocking revelation that Forest Service discouraged firefighters from wearing masks that help prevent cancers from toxic smoke. Many firefighters only had bandannas. For several years fires have increased and this was happening with more firefighters doing dangerous work yet this only came up when NYT reporters brought this up recently. The head of Forest Service was summoned to a Congressional oversight hearing and rightly so.  Rep. Jared Huffman of California: “We’ve talked about the New York Times piece. Chief, do you feel like the Forest Service is doing everything that it can to make the safety risk of smoke inhalation known to firefighters?” Mr. Schultz: “We need to continue to focus on safety as we move forward, including this issue.” There are about 40,000 firefighters in Forest Service mostly young men and many more employed by contractors. Because they are first responders also the work of firefighters has 360,000 in the US and 600,000 volunteers. With such sheer numbers masks to prevent inhalation of toxic chemicals that can cause cancer is highly important and should be given high priority.   ...

The median income in the US in 2024 is where it was in 2019 before the pandemic at about $83,000 with the upper 10% of the population making about $200,000 having a 5% increase. Median income means 50% of the US population makes above $83,000 and 50% below that. In 2024 compared to 2023 slight increase of about 4% for men compared to women, no change for white households, a drop of 3% for Black households, gains of 5% for Hispanic and Asian households, Census Bureau Report shows.

Overall cost of living prices at grocery stores, for automobiles, and housing rental, is what is impacting people the most and has left people in the lower half of the population with considerable anxieties about making ends meet. At $100,000-$150,000 incomes in the upper third of the population there is saving for colleges that have costs going through the roof and cost of child care that is causing anxiety.

Will AI reduce the curiosity that drives the creation of new knowledge and the curiosity for new discoveries that powered science and technology since 1600? Will it affect the human tendency and habit of asking questions, seeking out novel answers that is intrinsically human that AI cannot do? Scientific inventions that led to Europe leading the way and Asia falling behind after 1600 and new inventions taking place for 300 years with old theories discarded and new knowledge created are impossible under an AI arrangement. If AI existed in 1600 few new discoveries would have happened because they involve asking new questions and finding answers to these questions that take many years sometimes a lifetime of discovery and invention. Other weaknesses of AI are for example that it is fast but it cannot think- it is pieces of knowledge pinned together in different ways that come up from billions of pieces of information pieced together. It gives the appearance of thinking if one is not careful to look at it's process diligently. Its main source is using the public knowledge base built by Wikipedia, with other additions piled on top. Wikipedia may be wrong there are biases and tendencies to overlook facts in Wikipedia inherent in any knowledge exercise. These are then transferred to AI without anyone knowing about it openly, making it more dangerous in that it precludes creative thinking and finding solutions that never existed before to problems or questions, which can only be done by the human mind through its curiosity and stubborn dogged desire to find solutions to a problem.  ...
