Enabling access to broadband to millions of people in developing countries that lack this access is the next goal for Facebook. Facebook embraced open source software and it is relying on open source technology, including its own as open source, as a way to reduce the cost of building and operating the world's telecommunication networks- an operation that costs $150 billion a year. This will put pressure on telecommunications providers such as Ericsson to cut costs. Nokia has joined Facebook in the Telecom Infra Project or TIP, a Facebook initiated group that has set as its goal cutting telecom costs. Some of this is to be seen at Facebook developers' conference with open source efforts such as urban wireless network that checks performance 125,000 times a second, and a long range wireless system that can send a gigabit of data a second, according to Facebook.

Corruption is not a necessary factor for a market economy, it is one of its ills that if left uncontrolled or unregulated risks the downfall of the entire market system with loss of confidence among the people in a market system. This BBC report shows the staggering sum of $44 billion taken out of Saigon Commercial Bank. The report says 93% of loans  given by the bank went to Truong My Lan who set up the bank by merging 3 smaller banks, and shows the brazenness and the scale of the corruption. My Lan started with a market stall during Vietnam's shift to a state driven market economy in 1986 like China, and gradually acquired hotels and other property. Nguyen Phu Trong is the General Secretary of the Communist Party since 2011 and president 2018-2021. The risks to the Communist Party of such corruption have become evident and Nguyen Phu Trong as leader of the Communist Party in Vietnam started his campaign against corruption in 2016 after pro business prime ministers of the past had led to Saigon's economy being left unregulated after 1986 in then Doi Moi reforms. It is Vietnam- and China's- lack of familiarity or experience with the market system that has led to tolerance of outright corruption in the past. In no way does a market system need any corruption of any sort to function that damages the credibility of the system with the people. As it is insidious and can affect the whole economy it requires vigilance, oversight and regulatory checks. ...

Thomas Piketty is France's and Europe's best trained economist today with highly popular books, one on Capital, and one on Capital and Ideology. Piketty was trained at the London School of Economics, where Greens leader Annalena Baerbock of Germany was also a student, and today he is professor at LSE. His research has shown that for economic growth to happen after the pandemic European societies need to take the lead and build fairer societies where everyone has a decent living and a fair share of the pool of resources in each country. Piketty is respected by leaders that range from Biden and Scholz in US and Germany to president Xi in China. Biden's Families and Workers plan and Scholz's plan for dignity of workers and working class, and the Common Prosperity campaign of president Xi for greater investments in education, healthcare and housing are all inspired by Piketty and by the socially conscious background of these leaders. Prime minister Modi's plans for Jal Jeevan, cooking gas, to ease the burden on hundreds of millions of Indian women, for farmers with small land holdings in agriculture to improve output and use less chemicals, and for investments in infrastructure projects, housing, are also coming from similar concerns for growth and fairness. ...

The failure of the SEC under Gary Gensler to protect ordinary Americans who are mistakenly trusting their savings to cryptocurrency firms is seen as a major flaw in his running of the agency by former SEC officials and other SEC experts. The gaps in SEC enforcement and this weakness is the subject of this report in the WSJ. The cryptocurrency firms are not registered with the SEC and do not follow SEC rules hurting ordinary Americans putting money there. Mr. Gensler was made head of the SEC in 2021, and the SEC has been looking at crypto firms since 2017 but failed to come up with a regulatory model in 5 years.

The NYT's Motoko Rich and Hikari Hida look at the relationship between Shinjo Abe and Fumio Kishida of Japan. Both entered parliament at the same time in 1993, and both are sons and grandsons of members of parliament. Mr. Abe took the lead and when it resigned in 2021 Kishida was not his first choice to succeed him in the Liberal Democratic Party, Kishida sees increasing defense spending as on of the realities of the changing situation in Asia and the Japanese public now supports this. Kishida is pursuing a different economic policy with an effort to reduce economic inequality which he sees as a problem similar to the US and Europe.

The message to the US from Jackson, Mississippi which shut off its water for fears from aging infrastructure is that the US needs to replace its aging pipes and pumps. Short term patches are not the solution and don't work. Half of the 1600 miles of water main that distribute water through New Orleans are over 80 years old. In Santa Cruz, California, a single pipe goes from the reservoir to the city, with no backup. President Biden has allocated $55 billion for safe drinking water- the actual need is $1 trillion says the American Water Works Association. This WSJ report looks at the problem in different parts of the US.

In protecting deposits Biden and Yellen's goal is to keep the banking system safe so that it does not affect the economy and have effects on workers and families at the time of a cost of living crisis. The three years of the pandemic has also put families under severe stress. The Biden administration will also make it a policy to ensure that banks pay most or all of the costs borne by the FDIC in covering deposits that are uninsured. 97% of the deposits at Silicon Valley Bank were uninsured yet the Biden administration did not hesitate to have the FDIC cover these deposits because of its policy of recovering all costs after stabilization.

New uranium mines starting up in Arizona, Utah, and other parts of the western United States. In 1980 before nuclear energy went out of favor after the Three Mile Accident and Chernobyl US produced 44 million pounds of uranium. Much of it now comes from Russia. In 2024 the production is down to about 50,000 pounds. It is being revived in new mines in Arizona and Utah, underneath the earth's surface as shown in this NYT report. Yet fewer people work in extraction because of the technology which sends water into the ground which dissolves uranium and it is then brought up and sent to processing to make it into yellow cake.

Transport workers and professional service workers such as lawyers are hurt by the change because of generous benefits. A general strike is bringing workers across France in protest. DW.com shows the Straits of Hormuz where the Persian Gulf meets the Gulf of Oman before it meets the Arabian Sea facing India. Ships cross a narrow space of 2 miles in the narrowest point that is 21 miles wide in the Straits of Hormuz. The UAE, Oman face Iran in that area. 20 million barrels of oil by tanker traffic cross the Straits of Hormuz every day. India, China, Japan and EU depend on the Straits of Hormuz for oil supplies making it critical for sea navigation. Iranian parliament  has threatened closing of the Straits as aresponse to the US strike on nuclear weapons development sites. China and India lose cheaper oil supplies from Iran as a result of the Israel-Iran war. Russia, Saudis, UAE, Qatar, gain because it increases the price of oil supplies from Russia. Iran loses a source of oil revenue with damage to its oil facilities. The Israeli economy is resilient and its stock markets are showing rapid growth as the war changes the Gulf region and  Southwest Asia, South Asia moving it in the direction of economic and business deals and agreements that enhance improvement in the lives of the people away from decades of conflict from the colonial era in which the British and the French gained control of the Gulf region and Iraq, Syria after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the anti colonial regimes that failed to provide development, the CIA's intervention under Dulles and Eisenhower to remove the democratically elected government of Mossadegh in Iran in 1953 and its repercussions in the Reagan period with Rumsfeld/Reagan compounding that error by supporting Iraq's Hussein leading to 3 decades of loss of American lives in the region's wars and also endangering Israel. ...

The UK is open to American proposals for a global minimum tax rate given that it includes a fairer split of the taxes from US tech companies. Discussions are taking place under the umbrella of the OECD, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. This is intended to prevent tax escape by large companies which choose the lowest tax jurisdictions that are set up just for that purpose. The result has been that Europe and the US have suffered from decades of underinvestment and neglect of essential infrastructure and weakened the health and education systems leaving essentials of quality of living underfunded in cities and towns across Europe and the US. The pandemic has brought the lesson home in many ways. The UK has already increased the corporate tax rate to 25% in March to help pay for pandemic related help packages. The US Biden administration has proposed a 28% tax rate, and Treasury Secretary Yellen has suggested 21% as the minimum corporate tax rate. ...

Suggestions are not to take Fridays off but instead take Mondays off and sometimes break the week with Wednesday off. Fridays off are seen as a drawback because one is seen cramming five days work into four that week. Taking vacations for less than a week are seen as not productive for reducing stress at work and for getting better sleep. UBS buys Credit Suisse for $3 billion when the tangible book value of Credit Suisse was $45 billion. Tangible book value means little says this report in the WSJ. More significant for investors was that Credit Suisse was losing billions each year and its governance, its investment banking activities were seen negatively. It either had to stop the losses or shrink quickly. Another lesson is that digital banking makes it easier to withdraw deposits and digital communication magnifies the damage. Bonds can be risker than stocks in this situation. Tier One capital ratios also mean little in this situation as both UBS and Credit Suisse had capital ratios of about 14.2. 

What is notable is that even the $3 billion UBS paid was seen as risky so that the Swiss government had to step in with a guarantee that it would provide $9 billion to cover losses after the first $5 billion in losses were taken by UBS, after that the losses would be split between the two.

Extreme German dependence on Russian oil and gas that happened under the administration of Angela Merkel and the high oil prices today from a a lack of development of alternative renewable energy resources created the situation that provided the financing for Russia's war in Ukraine. This is now unwinding as the European Union and the US set a price cap of $60 for Russian oil. This cap will in future reflect the cost of production of oil in Russia among other factors, and the lower demand for fossil fuels as renewable energy production is accelerated quickly, and the inflation fighting efforts of the US central bank. Gradually the mechanisms and environment is being created for an end to the conflict in Ukraine.

Governor Jerry Brown of California retires to an isolated family ranch in Colusa County, an hours drive northwest of Sacramento, the state capital. He is the longest tenured and oldest governor of the state, having held the office when he was younger and then coming back years later to be governor again after becoming Mayor of Oakland. His father was also a famous governor of the state. 

His values of embracing community almost to the point of being tribal were evident in his long years in office. His three years spent at a Jesuit seminary before going to law school also shaped his life. Brown was opposed to embellishment, living in a sort of ascetic way, and was also opposed to a cult of personality. Upto the point that he refused to sign autographs as governor.
