Marie Le Pen's National Front Party gets only 8 seats in France's parliament following the second round of voting. It will not have enough seats to form its own parliamentary group. After winning about one third of the votes in the presidential election Marie Le Pen will not have enough seats in parliament to act as opposition leader. Marie Le Pen will represent the industrial constituency of Henin-Beaumont in northern France. Many voters from the parties on the right and the left decided not to vote in the parliamentary elections giving smaller representation to all parties, with a sharp drop for the Socialist and Republican parties. The big gainer in this situation was the En Marche party of  president Macron. For the first time younger members were elected with average age around 40-ish and 38% of parliamentary seats going to women, which is seen as a positive factor in the results. By giving Macron a solid majority in parliament the French people chose to give the government the ability to implement its program for reviving the economy, and reducing the gap between rural areas, industrial towns and large metropolitan areas such as Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux.   ...

Britain staged a rehearsal for a pandemic called Cygnus in 2016. Till that time the preparations for a pandemic that started years earlier during the SARS crisis were conducted vigorously. Yet the by this time Britain was becoming immersed in the Brexit struggles in the ruling Conservative Party. Prime minister Cameron resigned on July 13, 2016  and was replaced by Theresa May. From that time on the struggles with pro Brexit factions led by Boris Johnson consumed the COnservative Party and sucked the life out of the pandemic planning that Britain had conducted for years before. The recommendations to correct deficiencies from the pandemic rehearsal exercize were ignored. The second failure happened as the crisis approached. Again the Brexit date of January 31 intervened and the months long struggle to get Brexit had taken so much energy and tired out most of the British public including new prime minister and leader of the Conservative Party Boris Johnson. Johnson did not attend the first Cobra meeting of the highest level ministers and military, convened on January 25, 2020, as reported in the Times. Such meeting are convened only for a national threat. Only 5 weeks later on March 2 did the prime minister attend a Cobra meeting. During this time the situation was grave in Italy with rising cases and infections. The entire process was conducted during this time by the Health minister Mr. Hancock who had assured the public that the situation was under control. Britain now has the highest number of infections in Europe exceeding that in Italy- at 240,000 on May 15, 2020. The prime minister and his adviser Mr. Cummings, were also infected by the virus, and Mr. Johnson spent time in ICU before recovering. Queen Elizabeth addressed the nation on Easter day, the first such address since 1940, to boost Briain's spirits. Never had Britain been less prepared as in 2020 when earlier preparations were ditched for austerity plans and events such as Brexit fatigue conspired to strip the nation of the crucial 5-6 weeks of preparation since the first January 25 Cobra meeting of the highest people in government.  Never had such preparation even for 6 weeks been more crucial than in February and March as the infectivity ratio was determined by infectious disease specialists at the best British universities and scientific institutions to be between 2.6 and 3.4 compared to the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 which was somewhere between 2.0 and 3.0. This means every one person infects another 3 persons, compared to about 1 person in a regular flu season. This reproduction ratio and the nature of coronavirus remain a threat today as Britain, Europe, the U.S. and the world reopens.  As reported in the Times the infectivity ratio was also the reason for the mindset that refused to believe that the virus was real because at 3.0 infectivity the only way to tackle it was a "lockdown," and this was itself an "apocalypse" scenario for many in the pro-Brexit Conservative party that won the election, which badly wanted to get back to economic activity after Brexit. ...

Joey, 46 years old, lost his job in 2010, and has since worked at jobs a little above the minimum wage. Tina, 44 years old, is assistant director of a daycare center. They have worked hard to build a house on a 3 acre plot of land, after living for several years in a mobile home. They have 2 children, and Joey says he has to worry about job security before making any purchases. They are against free trade, as its not seen as favoring working Americans. They favor a strong military, because they see president Obama as defunding the military and weakening America overseas. They say they are not racially motivated, believe in God, but not church going. They don't feel strongly about social cultural issues, believing in live and let live. They say they like Trump not because he is saying anything new, only because he has voiced their concerns, they have felt this way for a long time. They want to see America winning- and to win as the country wins. What is striking is that the couple face some of the same job insecurity, and the paycheck to paycheck job insecurity and fear of losing what they have with job loss, that is being felt by average working Americans after the 2009 economic crisis. On the Democratic side Bernie Sanders is gaining support from white working class people who share the same anxieties about economic insecurity following the 2009 economic crisis....

He says a key bottleneck is reliance on Chinese made components such as poly-silicone wafers. Manufacturing these components in India is key for the health of the solar ecosystem in India. Lower oil and natural gas prices are a big boost to the economies of the US and the European Union. Cost savings equal about 3.5% of GDP in Italy and 2% of GDP for Portugal, Germany, and Spain, according to Capital Economics. The price of oil has dropped to $77 a barrel from $121, falling below its pre Ukraine war levels. This boost could increase eurozone output by 1.5%, equivalent to about a years worth of growth. Instead of contracting by 1.3% eurozone economies are expected to grow by 0.7%.

The port of Los Angles has a more than 25% decline in the number of containers that are moving through the port. The Port of New York and New Jersey has now overtaken Los Angeles as the main port of entry for shipping containers to the US. She says her overall training experience, Annemiek is 39 years, helped her pull ahead. Other cyclists say she was  on another planet as they felt the strain of the climb and lost pace. The growing city of Monterey, Mexico, near the American state of Texas, is facing severe shortages of water as shown in this report in the NYT. Seven years of drought except for 2018 have left the Cerro Prieto and other dams nearby mostly dry. Water is sent in by truck from outside the region. This is an arid region and the lack of rainfall comes at a time when the population is growing in this part of the country, which is the largest industrial state in Mexico.

The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence in the UK is urging adults to use a tape measure to check that their waist circumference does not exceed half their height. Other BMI guidelines do not provide an accurate measure of body fat and other ways are needed. Waist and height measure are "simple and effective" way to know if someone is overweight, says NICE. Today a majority of people in UK between 45 and 74 years are overweight. This is true in many parts of the world.

Fumio Kishida leads the LDP party in Japan to an absolute majority in parliament in the recent election. The LDP with its partner Komeito won 293 seats in the 465 member parliament. He called for reducing inequality, following a similar effort by president Biden in the US. Shyam Sunder Jyani, professor of sociology in Rajasthan, India's driest state, fights desertification by personally funding the planting of 2.5 million tree saplings. He ha been doing this for the last 15 years. In June 2021 his project Familial Forestry won the Land for Life Award of the UN Convention to Fight Desertification. Jyani goes from village to village teaching people how to nurture trees to make the landscape hospitable. This is a land in Rajasthan state where summer temperatures can reach 45 degrees Celsius or 113 degrees Fahrenheit.

 Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, says he hopes the IAEA visit to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine can take place within days. Both Mr. Macron and Mr. Putin have agreed that the inspection visit by IAEA should take place. This nuclear plant is under Russian control but run by Ukrainians and connected to the Ukrainian grid. The fears were that Russia would somehow disconnect it from the Ukrainian grid leading to issues of safety and potential of an accident from lack of cooling systems.
