After an initial period of a year Japanese companies are now making the move to pull back some of the production shifted overseas with the yen at 80 to the dollar. Canon made 40% of its product overseas in 2009 before the shift to 60% by 2013. Now it is shifting production back home to reach 40% overseas production. Other consumer electronics companies Panasonic, Sharp, Daikin, are shifting production back to Japan. This is similiar to the shift back to the U.S. of products made overseas as costs have risen in China and other Asian countries. The sharp swing in exchange rates is accelerating the trend. Auto companies Subaru, Toyota, Nissan, Honda are continuing plans to manufacture close to customers in the U.S. Shorter product cycles make it possible to shift production for electronics companies compared to longer product cycles at auto companies. Murata Manufacturing will continue to make smartphone parts close to its customers in China, lifting production overseas from 14% to 30%. As a result exports have increased in Nov. 2014 by 10.8% from the prior year and imports up 2.2%, according to the Finance Ministry....

A Russian Kinzhal hypersonic missile attack on Kviv is repelled with all missiles shot down on May 16, 2023. For the first time in the war the missile attacks are causing far less damage than in the early days of the war. A DW.com German reporter in Kviv on German television says the whole attack lasted only 15 minutes before things were back to quiet over Kviv with missiles exploding in the sky not on the ground.

 The average work has declined in Europe, and increased slightly in America. It is about one day a week less in Europe for the 5 largest European economies, according to the OECD. Shorter work hours set by employers and furloughs are affecting workers in Europe. This is because many European businesses used shorter working hours to avoid layoffs during the pandemic. 

Nearly 2 million Europeans are in furlough programs with governments making up the lost pay.

Working hours are less in Southern Europe because of a lack of full time work. About one third of workers in France and half in Spain and Italy would like to work more hours but cannnot find the extra hours. In Germany one fourth of workers choose to work less than 30 hours a week by choice.

The importance of a gap year in education remains underutilized in Indian education because of a lack of role models. A gap year in education during the early college and postgraduate years can give a person new experiences and skills, a new sense of purpose, that he or she may carry over into further education and create additional opportunities over time. In this way the gap year actually reinforces the idea that is behind changes in the way education is being setup today, that encourage young people to try out different subjects in the sciences and the humanities to find what they are best at and where their interests lie. In the same way new experiences including travel, meeting people, trying out new activities can enhance one's personal development and growth as a person.

In working class areas of Northern Ireland, both Catholic and protestant, there is areal sense of disillusionment. As sense that the promise of opportunities never materialized. Educational underachievement and child poverty has increased, made worse by the cost of living crisis. Twenty five years after the Good Friday Agreement ended sectarian clashes between Catholics and Protestants, there is the feeling that this part of Ireland has been left behind economically. The lack of a government in Stormont means decisions for improving health and education or providing social services are not taken.

The 2020 elections showed Sinn Fein focusing on the economy and improvements in the quality of living. In this sense all Irish people are looking for a better life, better governance, and interest in their future from the outside, particularly now that the pandemic is over.

Food costs for eating at home have actually come down by half since 1960. Charts on the US Department of Agriculture site (USDA) show US food costs for family budgets at 13% of personal disposable income for eating at home in the Kennedy years the 1960's. This has come down by half to 5.7% in 2024. In that period eating at restaurants and outside has doubled to 5.7% of personal disposable income. When people complain about food inflation this is an important factor, eating outside also leads to less control of intake and right nutrition, consequently leads to poorer health outcomes, and a growing share of health expenditures in America's national budget. It hits both the family budget and the national budget and then comes back to hit health outcomes.

It is well known that rail has a smaller carbon footprint than automobile travel. The why is Amtrak suffering neglect for so long in the US when it is well funded in Europe, Japan, China and India? It is because of deliberate neglect by many administrations and by the US Congress through lack of funding for new trains, new technological investment, and investing in its infrastructure. President Biden is changing all this with investment of about $66 billion. He used the Acela fast train service for decades from Washington DC to Wilmington. WSJ shows how a new Amtrak is emerging with many new routes, new stations,  and none of the delays that freight railroads imposed on Amtrak for decades. Amtrak is now fighting the freight railroads in court and has the support of the Biden administration.

The new exhibition at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial was visited by G7 leaders. It shows the human beings that died on that day, the survivors including children, the lives they lived, what they were doing at that moment on August 6, 1945. NHK documentary taking us through each exhibit in a walk through the exhibition was a profoundly moving experience. Yet few in the US may have seen it, and fewer even know it even exists.

If the wording in the Pew Research Survey were to include that only the government can tackle huge problems in climate change, infrastructure, and manufacturing, the over 50% of Americans that support government taking on these responsibilities might just as well be closer to 60-70 percent. If not much is done it will put the US behind in maritime shipping by a generation. The US and India are both starting from a low point but accelerating their effort. DJT's mother Mary Ann MacLeod visited the Hebrides isle of Lewis, was well respected in the community and spoke Gaelic. Even though DJT did not visit frequently he encouraged Stephen Smith to look at his maternal roots. DJT's grandfather was a fisherman and his great grandfather lost his life fishing in the North Sea. One can imagine something of Hemingway's Old Man and the Sea in this story from the 1800's, and trace the resilience of DJT back to that period.

Both says the ways of understanding this and the terminology "soft landing" or "cylical, midcycle" are now outdated and no longer apply. The last West Indies captain to lead a formidable West Indies team was Richie RIchardson. Sandip G of the Indian Express writes from Antigua about Richardson's early batting experiences at school and how he evolved facing fast bowlers. RIchardson started out idolizing legendary batsmen like Rohan Kanhai who were steady batsmen and batted in Test matches for days.    It was an early experience with his coach who put on fast bowlers at school to Richardson at bat, that got Richardson started on his trademark cut shot. Fearing for his life Richardson closed his eyes and hit one out of the field that was lost forever. Soon he became known as "the fastest blade in the Caribbean," for the way he could strike at fast bowling. Richardson says its not like he became good at the cut stroke overnight. He would practice the shot 1000 times a day.  It was Rohan Kanhai from Guyana who once said that you have to put every poor delivery away to the boundary and some good ones too, making the bowlers think. Flashing blade and canny, were words used for Kanhai. This was true for Richardson too with his cut shot. Today as he is perfecting his golf game or when his motivation dips he has only to look back over his shoulder to the high walls of his house, to his backyard where he practiced the cut shot, and all that drive and energy from that time would come back to him. ...

China is exceptional in the speed with which it is moving on infrastructure projects. And this bodes well for American exporters like Caterpillar which is seein g big jump in excavator sales, and for China which may see thre fourths of the 6.5% increase in GDP in 2009 coming from infrastructure building. Fortunately there is still a need for alot of infrastructure development in China. Typical is the approval and start of work on the $930 million Xiangshan Island Bridge which will extend over the East China Sea and through mountain tunnels. Caterpillar CEO James Owen says of approval and start of construction as fast, "its something like nine months in the USA versus 9 weeks " in China. China has agood pipeline of projects and alot of planning work has been done for many years. For Xiangshan Island Bridge this goes back to1994. Liu Cijun completed a PhD dissertation in 1999 on bridge wind resistance, and the Ningbo native is now Chief Engineer for the project. Preparatory work on the bridge goes back to 2004 and the stone cutting ceremony in 2006. In August the bridge's feasibility report won approval from aplanning agency in Beijing, and in December approval by the Ministry of Transportation. Construction started in just 11 days after the Chinese government approved the project. China's investment in infrastructure has jumped by 102% in the 1st quarter of 2009 from a year earlier, according tho the National Bureau of Statistics. By comparison Washington has distributed $69 billion of its $787 billion in stimulus fundsto states and localities, which have spent $14 billion according to the WSJ....
