Sales of automobiles are shifting from trucks and SUV's to cars in the USA and overall sales are seeing large declines. How is Europe faring in this regard? Spain's car manufacturer's association Anfac said car registrations in June 2008 dropped by 31% from June 2007. Spain' GDP showed a decline to 2.7% in 1st quarter 2008 compared to 3.5% in 4th quarter 2007. In Italy car registrations dropped 19.5% in June from a year earlier. In France car registrations went up by 2.1% in June from provisional figures. Auto sales in Japan dropped 3.6% in June according to the Japan Automobile dealer's Association.

Information about the supply of services to the oil industry, including engineering professionals, from supply services company Schlumberger. Investment in petroleum exploration and production is expected to be $178 billion, a 10% increase over $162 billion in 2004, according to an estimate by Schlumberger's CEO, Mr. Gould, from figures published by energy companies. Gould personally thinks it will be higher. Mr. Smith CEO of John Herold , an oil industry consulting firm said that one oil industry executive told an industry gathering that drilling one onshore well now costs $1.5 million compared to $800,000 15 months ago. So the oil industry is getting much less for its buck with skyrocketing costs of exploration. Saudi Arabia plans to invest $50 billion over the next 5 years to expand its petroleum industry. Minister Naimi said that energy project costs have gone up by about 60%, due to shortages of engineering professionals, and equipment. To get some sense of the shortage of experienced professionals consider the figures from the American Petroleum Institute API. The oil industry peaked with 860,000 jobs in 1982, then lost 500,000 jobs by 2000. "A lot of skilled people have either been laid off, or have retired from the industry in the last 18 years," says Schlumberger's Mr. Gould. "Recruiting and training their replacements takes time and requires a global approach." ...

A food scare for Danone's Dumex baby formula brand in China hurt sales. Danone has decided to swap the Dumex brand for additional stake in China's dairy company Mengniu, for a 12% stake in the company. Danone will focus on ecommerce business in China which has grown rapidly to about 461 million consumers as more baby food products are sold online. About 7% of total sales are from China for Danone. Danone has also decided it will keep the medical nutrition business line because of better future prospects. Earlier Danone sold off its majority stake in a joint venture with Wahaha in China. Business decisions at Danone are made by two executives Mr. Ribaud and Mr. Faber, the CEO. Fresh dairy unit of Danone faces several challenges, including rising price of milk, and margins dropping from 15% in 2010 to 10% in 2014. Fresh Dairy generates over 50% of revenues.
