This analysis concludes that it will be harder for developing countries to tackle job losses from robots. One problem is that taxing robot use would lead to investments in production in countries that allow robots. Opportunities exist for technology and robots in agriculture in India, by offsetting this with retraining agricultural workers for other work. China has managed the transition to robots by finding alternative opportunities for workers. Companies have shifted to robots with the higher wages in China and shortage of workers.

Xiaomi, a maker of smartphones in China, traded for about US$2.15 per share on the Hong Kong stock market on July 9, 2018 after its IPO. Xiaomi was valued at US$43 billion, about half of the value that was expected. Reasons given by experts are that Xiaomi is one of a number of smartphone makers in the highly competitive Chinese market. Xiaomi has about half of its sales in India and other countries where it sells low cost smartphones with more value based on features included. Problems that it experienced in Brazil in connecting with national carriers made investors cautious about Xiaomi's market position in other developing countries. Limiting its profitability is its position as a hardware maker in a competitive market, without the profitability of other internet companies. Xiaomi surged in the last decade in China as a local producer of smartphones that provided features of more expensive brands at a lower price. It built a following as a quality local brand in China. ...

Boris Johnson made many gaffes, with inappropriate comments and patronizing attitudes, sometimes looking boorish, during his short period in office for 2 years 2016-2018 as Foreign Secretary. Johnson was a journalist who pushed for a hard line on Brexit and appealed to extreme right wingers in the Conservative Party.

Former prime minister Harold Macmillan described the persons holding the job of Foreign Secretary as either being dull or dangerous. Johnson rarely showed a dull moment tangling with foreign leaders at every opportunity and as he said once creating "opportunities for fresh disasters."

The expectations persist that men are supposed to be the breadwinners in a marraige even today. The situation for marraiges is better for marraiges after 1990 compared to marraiges in 1960-1970, with more recent marraiges having higher gender role adjustment.

Today many women earn more than their husbands. More women graduate from college than men. In situations where the lower earning spouse helps his partner with housework and other responsibilities there is a healthier marraige. Where the male partner is not working or has temporary work the situation can involve higher stress on the marraige because of the attitude than men should be breadwinners that has persisted. The woman may be embarrassed in such situations or feel the husband should be contributing more.

Embraer's commercial business which brings in 58% of revenue is being sold to Boeing. Boeing takes an 80% stake in commercial airplane and services business with Embraer owning 20%. A strong partnership between Bombardier of Canada and Boeing was threatening Embraer's leading position in the market for regional planes. The North American market brings in 57% of Embraer sales with only 13% in Brazil. Retired Union Health Secretary Sujatha Rao answers questions about the role of the elected government in Delhi and the role of the Lieutenant Governor in running the administration. Rao says that Delhi as the national capital, should have been designated like Chandigarh as a Union Territory without a legislature. The current structure gives the elected government insufficient powers to fulfill campaign promises.

The IAS is still relevans Rao says as is evident in India's politics so that day to day running of the administration can always be carried out when there is no stable government, as in Tamilnadu today. This is the role Sardar Patel envisioned for the IAS.

India's Supreme Court ruling on the Delhi Government vs the Union of India case says that the power lies with the elected representatives not the Lieutenant Governor in India's democracy. For Delhi it is the elected government in which authority is vested. At the same time the ruling says these powers are not "absolute." The case arises from the conflict between the AAP Party and chief minister Kejriwal in Delhi with the central government appointed Lieutenant Governor.

Mr. Kejriwal conducted a protest at the LG Governor's offices because of this conflict.

Benjamin Pavrd's 20 yard goal with France behind 2-1 against Argentina in the World Cup will be remembered as the goal of the tournament. Van Dam says its not that great being a worker in the U.S. because it is hard for the unemployed resulting from competing with workers in other countries with lower wages, and for those who are unemployed harder because worker collective bargaining is weakened over 3 decades. He cites a 296 page OECD report showing very little government support for unemployed and at risk American workers. It says this has contributed to higher income inequality and larger share of lower income people than almost any other advanced a nation. Only Spain and Greece are shown as having more households earning less than half the median income- showing large numbers of people are poor or close to being poor. In the U.S. an average of 1 in 5 lose their jobs each year, and 23% of workers 15 to 64 are in their job less than a year in 2016. The job churn hurts workers because of firing and layoffs being frequent, more than is healthy for a economy. The U.S. and Mexico are the only two countries not requiring advance notice before firings. And fewer than half of workers find a job within a year in the U.S. Two in three families with a displaced worker fall in poverty for some time. Unemployed workers with typically 26 weeks support get less support than any other country in the study. Only 12% of workers in U.S. are covered by collective bargaining. ...
