In his speech at the Labour party conference Keir Starmer wll put mental health as Labour's key pitch to voters. Starmer will say that a Labour government will take note of the mental health crisis after Covid and make mental health treatment available to anyone who needs it within a month, and create drop-in mental health hubs for children and young people. This is Starmer's first in person address to Labour's party conference.

Labour believes the mounting fuel crisis with most petrol stations out of gasoline is creating concerns about Boris Johnson's ability to tackle Britain's problems after Covid pandemic. Referring to Boris Johnson's plea for motorists not to fill cars unless necessary, Starmer will try to contrast the challenges facing Britain after the pandemic with the chaotic approach of Boris Johnson.

The U.S. Federal Reserve chairman Yellen tells a Boston Fed conference on economic opportunity and inequality: "The extent and continuing increase in inequality in the U.S. greatly concern me. I think it is appropriate to ask whether this trend is compatible with values rooted in our nation's history, among them the high value Americans have traditionally placed on equality of opportunity." Yellen pointed out that the high inequality impedes economoic mobility which impairs the recovery. Income disparities of this type reduce the country's economic potential, said Yellen. Recent housing gains have helped restore losses of housing wealth with more gains at the bottom. Yellen emphasized the need to invest in education and opportunities for business ownership as ways to improve economic mobility. Low inflation or deflationary trends with lower oil and food prices, give the Fed more flexibility to reduce the numbers of the long term unemployed or part time employed for lack of full time work, a critical goal for the Yellen Fed....

Parent accountability in Georgia high school shooting- when parents buy children rifles is this OK? Most parents responding to this article in the Washington Post say parents should be held responsible. In this case of a shooting at a Georgia high school by a 14 year old 2 teachers and 2 students were killed, and nine injured, there was something wrong about how this happened. Colin Gray 55, was convcted for second degree murder because he gave his son a Colt Gray a rifle for a Christmas gift in 2023 and ignored his son's deteriorating mental health, did not secure the rifle. Both parents were struggling with drug addiction. Should he gift a rifle to a 14 year old?

The unease in rural areas was accompanied by unease among younger people 18-34 years over cost of living, and the unease among Latinos in general and Black people  without a college degree.  Taking an approach to the wars that would remove them as distractions by looking for a settlement in Ukraine through negotiations, and prioritizing strong action on the border, price surges would have helped tackle pressing issues that caused so much unease.  ...

Even though immigration makes the headlines for the average German and daily German life polls and surveys show says the NYT that the main concerns center around a failing economy. For 5 years Germany has experienced little growth. According to Eurostat, Germany's GDP growth rate is 2023 -0.2% 2022: 1.37% 2021: 3.67% 2020 -4.1% Tankersley and Eddy report from Lutherstadt Wittenberg Eastern Germany. As Germany's economy slows companies may move jobs and manufacturing to Austria and France says one CEO of a company that makes fertilizer and additives for diesel motors. This could lead to loss of 10,000 jobs in an already depressed region. The problems faced buy German industry are increasing with higher costs of energy- even after prices have come down energy is 20% costlier than the European average according to Eurostat. Industry leaders say this is the result partly of efforts to reduce fossil fuel emissions. Increasing competition from China means Germany cannot compete as before. Investment in public infrastructure has not kept up with crumbling roads and bridges and a rail system with underinvestment and plagued with delays. Investment in digital technology has lagged behind China, India and France.   ...
