President Trump announced that he is declaring a national emergency to bypass Congress and pursue building a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. This comes as the president accepted $1.4 billion, a fourth of the $5.7 billion he had asked for from Congress. The Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan in 1989 was a point at which the country could have made a search for peace iwth the help of foreign powers India, Pakistan, U.S. which supported the mujhadeen and Russia. The missed opportunity under Reagan led to 40 years of uninterrupted war at immense human cost to the people of Afghanistan, and financial and human cost to the U.S. with its involvement in the country's wars. A lecturer at the University of Amsterdam looks at the missed opportunities from the past for a peaceful settlement with the help of foreign powers. This happens as the Taliban meet in Moscow with other parties in the dispute.  A missed perspective relates to the origins of the problem in the India- Pakistan conflict and the history of Afghanistan in the colonial period. Afghanistan was seen as a buffer by Pakistan after the 1971 war with India that created Bangladesh from the former Eastern part of Pakistan. As a result both the Russians and the Americans were embroiled in wars and passions that had little to do with ideologies and  more with feudalism, factions and religious conflicts. Much national treasure in human life and lost opportunities for development at home on the side of foreign powers was the cost of the involvement.      ...

President trump accepted the package of spending bills passed in Congress which provide a fourth of the border wall funding he is looking for. The package includes $1.38 billion in funding for 55 mile border fence on the border with Mexico. Mr. Trump sought $5.7 billion for a longer fence to fulfill a key 2016 campaign pledge. Amazon abandoned its plans to locate its Headquarters in New York City after growing opposition to $3 billion in taxincentives offered to Amazon to move to New York's Long Island region. The growing opposition in the New York State Senate and pro-union comments by New York Mayor De Blasio led to Amazon taking a quick decision to withdraw. In the past Amazon has come under criticism for its opposition to unions and for its lower wages.

When Airbus launched its superjumbo jet in 2000 with seating for 550 passengers large airports said they needed to upgrade facilities to meet the larger size. Technological advances and preference for smaller jets flying directly to many locations have doomed the Airbus A-380. Airbus announced it will stop making the A380 in 2021.

Technological advances since 2000 with lighter carbon fiber parts and super efficient engines make it possible to fly smaller jets directly to many airports reducing the need to use hubs. Airlines preferred these jets. Only Emirates flying out of Dubai which uses half of the A380 superjumbo jets has continued with the large aircraft which has 37 gates specially designed for 380 use.

The DW's Ines Pohl interviews Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina as she begins a fourth term as prime minister. Hasina says "everybody should take a break so we can accomodate the younger generation."  Hasina says she will not run again. 

As the economy continues growth at 6-7 percent Hasina emphasizes basic needs of food security, housing, health, education, job opportunities. "Every human being wants a better life we have to insure that", says Hasina.

A big change for Hasina is in girl's education. "What I have done is that education for girls is totally free up to the 12th grade and that we provide a stipend to them." Hasina sees the culture change into making parents rethinking girl's education as a big change, believing that the girl can earn her own money as a good thing when she is married. It is a change she believes will continue to change Bangladesh society.

In central Switzerland the Trift  Glacier is nowhere to be seen. In its place is the Trift bridge, a valley and a lake that is a popular destination for hikers. Like thousands of glaciers elsewhere it has melted away with climate change. Switzerland's 1500 glaciers and melting ice generates hydropower that powers 60 percent of the country's electricity. More melting ice means an increase in hydropower generation by 4 percent. Yet this is temporary. Eventually the melting glaciers from climate change mean fewer glaciers and less hydropower. The Alps have the most glaciers in Europe and provide the bulk of Europe's hydropower. Multimedia reporter Ben Solomon provides an exciting look at awesome pictures and media showing the glaciers, mountain generating plants and hydropower in the Alps. A rare look inside the hydropower that produces 16% of the world's electricity, that is now endangered. Researchers at the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich have a solution- to use the topography created by the melting glaciers including new lakes and areas that can be made into reservoirs that would be used to generate electricity. The glaciers in the Aletsch part of the Alps are one such region being studied. ...

Spain's economic recovery is creating jobs and growth has returned after the financial crisis yet Spain's middle class has suffered a decline. Today across Europe only 60% can call themselves middle class, compared to 50%, and this decline can be seen in Spain where the middle class remains vulnerable and the quality of jobs created is nowhere near what it used to be.

Just like in the U.S. this reverses two decades of expansion and growth.

Europe's safety nets have offered protection in the past but this is also affected by deficit reduction policies required by the European Union. The loss of middle income jobs, weakened social protections, and skill mismatches have reduced economic mobility and widened economic inequality. Automation and globalization have made things worse.

Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of England blamed the Brexit "fog of uncertainty" for the decline in the forecast for Britain's economic growth to 1.2% for 2019, worst in a decade. This is based on a "soft" Brexit. He said a no-deal Brexit would be a "economic shock" for Britain, that "we shouldn't be under any illusions about it."

Carney rejected the view of David Davis in The Times, that a 20% decline in the British pound would be good for Britain by "making  exports more competitive." Davis had called Carney's view "too doom-laden." A fall in the pound would be a necessary adjustment mechanism, Carney says, but it is "a hit to incomes, and not a step to prosperity." The pound declined by 17% from its 2015 peak after the referendum on Brexit.

The fence proposed by Congress would be made of steel posts and built along the levees on the Rio Grande RIver that separates the U.S. and Mexico.
