There is much criticism of a $900 billion stimulus bill that only provides $600 direct payment checks to families suffering lost income during the pandemic. About $200 billion goes to business in the Paycheck Protection Program of which $120 billion goes to the most affluent 1% of Americans.

President Trump was critical and called for $2000 in direct checks saying it was scandalous that families would only get $600 in direct payment while lobbying interests and other interests were getting significant sums of money. Part of the Democratic Party has also favored a decent check to families.

Saudis help stabilize oil prices at close to $100. This could keep $100 as a price as Canadian tar sands are in the range of $90-95 a barrel, and the Saudis are interested in a stable price that would finance their budgets and also not be a burden to Asian economies which have conveyed their concern and also not be so much as to lead to further decline in the slowing economies of western countries.

Captain Shubman Gill on India's win at Edgbaston in the Second Test cricket against England-

"I think all of the things we spoke about after the first game, we were spot on with all of those things. The way we came back with our bowling and fielding was tremendous.

"We knew with 400 or 500 we would be in the game, especially if we he held our catches. Both our bowlers bowled brilliantly with the way we were able to get through [England's] top order.

"Akash Deep bowled with so much heart and skilfully with his lengths. He moved it in both directions, which was tough to do. He was magnificent for us."

OECD released a study that shows losses in mortgage sector in the United States, the amount that banks and companies have to writeoff as losses could reach $300 billion. The study points out that only some of these losses are reflected so far and more will be seen when the mortgage rates reset upwards in May 2008. The study assumption is for a default rate on mortgages of 14% on subprime mortgages. Loans made to borrowers with poor credit amount to $125 billion. When you include losses on loans on Alt-A mortgages given to people with better credit the losses reach $300 billion. Banks are exposed to the subprime mortgage market through securities of housing loans and the writeoffs could be in excess of the actual amount on defaults as the writeoffs may be made in the next 6-12 months even though given time the housing market should stabilize. Over time the OECD sees the situation stabilizing after the worst of the losses are seen in 2008.

The change in the election situation in July 2024 may be one of the causes. Smaller companies in the Russell 5000 are doing better. It is not clear if this is a trend.

Best Buy electronics retail chain plans to close 50 big box stores in 2012 and open 100 mobile small format, stand alone stores. This is part of a strategy to reduce costs by $800 million by fiscal 2015. Total sales at stores open at least 14 months declined 2.4%. Best Buy competes with online retailers like Amazon.com and discounters such as WalMart. Best Buy's response was to increase online and mobile options for purchases and discounting efforts of its own. This has put pressure on its profits, with a loss in fiscal fourth quarter ending March 3, 2012, of $1.7 billion, which also reflects restructuring charges.
