South Korea's LG Energy Solution is pushing forward with its aggressive investments in electric vehicle batteries by going public, raising $11 billion through South Korea's largest listing on January 27. LG Energy has made large investments in the US and is dominant in Europe. CEO Kwon Young-soo told a recent news conference that its strength is that "we have global buyers and global production facilities in the US and Europe, which CATL doesn't have." Saying that LG Energy is not Chinese is a big pitch, and LG Energy is taking advantage of the current trade war between the US and China.  China's CATL or Amperex is the largest maker of electric vehicle batteries with 30% of all batteries sold, compared to LG Energy's 20%. Yet CATL is concentrated in the China home market. The next three companies are in order Japan's Panasonic, China's BYD, South Korea's SK Innovation, and Samsung SDI. Nikki Haley is doing what has happened before, fighting for principles in her party and showing that a fully significant 40 percentage points of her party believe in the old conservative ideas, of the Republican party. The situation is analogous to the intraparty struggles that beset the Democratic party after the abrupt end after 1000 days of the John F. Kennedy presidency and administration. Since the 1920's and two periods of rising inequality accompanied by technological change from the 1870's that ended with the Great Depression, the US had experienced a great revival under Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman and Eisenhower. In 1960 a new future was articulated by Kennedy of the new world that lay ahead, one he had seen upfront in Asia before, during and after the war. How would we bring the post colonial world of billions of people into the modern world. Since then both a modern China and now modern India are part of this change. "Today our concern must be with that future. For the world is changing. The old era is ending. The old ways will not do." Acceptance speech for the Democratic nomination for President, July 15, 1960. It was interrupted after the intraparty disputes that began in 1968, Robert Kennedy challenging LBJ, leading to Richard Nixon, and Edward Kennedy challenging Jimmy Carter leading to Ronald Reagan. John F. Kennedy had articulated a vision that still is alive today based on an understanding of how America's needs fit into all humanity's needs.  In some ways the situation after 2024 or 2028 still goes back to the vision of a new order of the world with emerging nations in Asia with 3 billion people, and additional billions of people in Africa, Latin America. The Arms buildup promised by Reagan in 1980 has yielded little about 50 years later, not even the fall of the Berlin Wall which today has been replaced by another struggle in Eastern Europe in 2024. Truman tackled the Berlin Blockade,  Eisenhower had faced upto Soviet tanks in Budapest, Kennedy had faced the Berlin crisis in 1963 his ich bin ein Berliner (I am Berliner). What purpose would an orbital weapons program serve- and could the US ever be or even want to be  "only one superpower in a safe world," with an orbital weapons program as Reagan and Weinberger went out to do and failed completely. America faces a situation analogous to 1920's with increasing inequality and weakness in the social fabric, as a result of four decades of rising inequality accompanied by technological changes, and misguided Reagan programs that diverted from John Kennedy's vision that the "old era is ending, the old ways will not do."  The vision put forward by John F. Kennedy has more relevance today for the future. That vision he articulated in the First Inaugural Address in which he also said that this work may not be accomplished "in our lifetime on the planet." It is important to remember that John F. Kennedy connected his vision to FDR when he said in his State of the Union Address to Congress in Jan. 1961- In the name of a great President whose birthday we honor today, closing his final State of the Union Message sixteen years ago. "We pray that we may be worthy of the unlimited opportunities that God has given us." This is the vision that stands before America even today in 2024.   ...

With the demands from younger people for a generational change in leadership for both Republicans and Democrats the questions are being raised about Nancy Pelosi continuing as leader of the Democratic Party in the U.S. Congress.

With the departure of Republican leader Paul Ryan from politics there is pressure on Pelosi to follow Ryan and create room for a younger leader. Democrats running for office in the upcoming midterm elections say they will run against both Republicans and Pelosi. This appears to be working. Pelosi has only a 32% favorability rating with 44% viewing her unfavorably. Pelosi is 79 years old and Stenny Hoyer the other Democrats leader is 78 years old, both have lost touch with the new Progressive trends in the Democratic Party.

GM is looking for ways to be able to provide more loans to buyers. Its working with lenders and financial institutions to be able to offer more loans to increase sales. GM continues to work with the old GMAC, now called Ally Financial Inc, but it is looking for new partners to expand financing to car buyers. It has studied the options of regaining control of GMAC's auto lending business or starting its own finance company. For now it is looking at working with other lenders to reach buyers who are at the lower end of the income and credit scale.

Mr. Trump has decisively changed the Republican party. Most Republicans support Mr. Trump personally, less the Republican party. Mr. Lindsey Graham, a senator from South Carolina, says of the Republican party before Trump that it had become a bit staid, that we looked like the banker next door who may foreclose on your house. Mr. Romney epitomized that in his view. Gone are the views on deficits, on wars, and on imports and transfer of technology to China as being acceptable.  Five years from 2015 when Mr. Trump came into prominence with his new style taking on the establishments of both parties with a fierce disdain for convention, both the Bushes and the Obamas and Clintons, the Republican party is completely transformed. Registered Republicans are now 60% non college educated in 2020 compared to 50% non college educated in 2016. The Trump policies on trade putting American workers first and America first have a resounding popularity with this audience- this should be no surprise after decades of job losses and factories shipped overseas under the previous administrations for 2 decades. Most of these workers are not college educated and are white and had enjoyed a good standard of living with a high school education in American factories till the shift of American manufacturing to China destroyed good paying jobs and impoverished the American working class.  Only 30% of college educated people are registered Republicans in 2020 compared to 40% in 2016. Overwhelmingly about 90% of registered Republicans are white.  They are majority male and older but there is a significant about 40% female and 40% young population under 40 years of age. This might resemble the party put together by Missouri Congressman Harry Truman as he led the Democratic Party in 1948 with a majority of non college educated Democrats, fighting for American workers and America first in the cold war with Russia. Truman also had a rough Missouri farm language and accent comparable to Mr. Trump's rough style and language disdainful of the old establishment and new tech establishment. Both were heavily disliked by the media and both did not let this bother them in any way. Both liked facing large crowds as Truman showed in campaigning by train across the country and Trump has shown in campaign rallies run in his own way. ...

Russian president Medvedev offers his view of the protests in Russia, that Russia is entering a new stage in the development of its political system. Medvedev told his United Russia party: "We are entering a new stage in the development of our political system and we should not close our eyes to that. It has already begun... It began because the old model- which faithfully and truly served our state in recent years, and did'nt serve it badly, and which we all defended- it has exhausted itself." He wanted to see United Russia take a leading role in reform. He warned that "it is categorically inadmissible that the political system be delegitimized." And warned Russians that the consequences of this were disastrous after the last time this happened in 1917. He was also critical of the U.S. government for its criticism of the elections.

Moderate far right, right and socialist have less meaning in the context of the French government of prime minister Michael Barnier. The NFP as the largest single party sees the turning down of it's moderate candidate Lucie Castets by Macron as not representative of the vote. Michael Barnier's choice as prime minister from the Les Republicains party with 47 members in the new National Assembly, the smallest of the top four parties NFP, Renaissance, RN and LR, means he will have to depend on Marie Le Pen's RN party to remain prime minister. Together the Les Republicains of Sarkozy and the Ensemble of Macron  have 213 members in the National Assembly representing the status quo, 168 for Ensemble Macron and 45 Les Republicians the Gaullist party. These two parties are the largest bloc combined compared to 182 seats for the socialist NFP Front Populaire and the Le Pen party with 143 seats. The strange twist is that Macron started out in the Socialist Party and was part of the Socialist administration of Francois Hollande, who formed his own party Renaissance (now Ensemble) to bring younger faces and replace the old political parties. This led to the decline of the Gaullist Les Republicains party. In 2024 Macron is back to the old parties- becoming part of an alliance with the old Les Republicains Gaullists. Yet the financial crises of 2009, the pandemic, and the inflation crises in France have changed France from what it was in the Gaullist De Gaulle period in the 60's to 90's, with a struggling lower and middle class who have shifted their support to Le Pen and to the Socialist Front Populaire. Barnier is left with the challenging job of combining new immigration policies (Le Pen) with socialist policies to help the middle and working class. A new consensus that says stopping migrants is part of helping working class (in Denmark and other EU countries) is how Barnier has to approach this situation to bring together different parties. ...

Italy's Five Star Movement is gaining in popularity before national elections in March 2018, because voters are fed up with the old political parties and the old political system. A Five Star Movement member Virginia Raggi is Mayor of Rome. Even though this has not led to improvements in tackling Rome's problems such as urban decay, garbage collection, and weak transportation, this is acceptable with angry voters who want to send a message to the traditional political parties that ran the government for 50 years. About a third of these voters who support the Five Star Movement are from the right, a third from the left and a third young people who never voted before, according to Italian pollster Pregliasco of You Trend. Recent polls show the Five Star support at 28% and the leading party. The anti-politician message really resonates in Italy with its lack of growth, and a sense that things will not change under politicians of the old system, right or left. As in France with the En Marche movement bringing in younger and new faces in parliament and in government, Five Star Movement is bringing younger faces to the forefront. As young as 31 years for the party's candidate for prime minister, Mr. Di Maio. As a result older politicians in their fifties from the established parties are running against younger people in their twenties and thirties, a situation seen in France in recent elections that brought new faces to parliament and new ways of governing.   ...

Mr Pandit reaped $165 million from the deal and Mr Guru Ramakrishnan, the CEO, tens of millions of dollars. How successful a firm was Old Lane and where is it now? Old Lane was started in 2006. It has returned all the money to original investors last summer, broke even on its original investments, and it has not lost money in the brutal market conditions. The hedge fund unit is now pretty much closed and the executives like Ramakrishnan are leaving. With Citi's worsening condition the hefty price tag for Old Lane has angered investors.

Most of them including women in the Pentagon are low key and private in their conversations. On the divisiveness in the U.S. Novakovic has some direct comments. She says she wories profoundly about this, especially the part that means there is no national narrative, just conflicting angry opinions that are corrosive and cancerous. This is because democracy requires shared values and a strong nation requires its own national narrative. She points out that in this way you can destroy yourself faster than an enemy can destroy you. About tech companies such as Microsoft, Google and Amazon not wanting to work with the U.S. government she says she is alarmed because this shows an ignorance about where they think their freedom comes from, where their platform of innovation and technology comes from, which is the strength and vitality of the U.S. as a nation.  ...

Ellen Barry of the NYT gives this exceptional story of how an old paper mill in Maine is rescued from liquidation by a Chinese investor needing pulp for making cardboard boxes at mills in China. The owner of the Chinese company Ms. Zhang built her business converting recycled scrap from the U.S. at mills in China into cardboard boxes used for shipping products. It is the largest manufacturer of this kind in China. The Chinese government stopped the import of scrap from the U.S. leading to the immediate need for new sources of pulp material for eight mills in China making the paper boxes. Ms. Zhang uses traditional methods including Feng Shui from ancient Chinese culture to make sure all the spirits are favorable for the enterprise. Hundreds of peach trees were planted along a tall fence around a nearby cemetery.  Zhang grew up as the eldest daughter with 7 siblings during the Cultural revolution upheaval in China and went to work at a young age. The work ethic is deeply built into her family where she is revered for her hard work and enterprising spirit. ...

Raja Mohan says in The Indian Express that India needs to look at the big picture of modernization in a new world for world trade in which the US is reindustrializing, Europe is reindustrializing, and India is on the road to modernization by 2040 over the next 15 years. All three processes are happening at the same time. 

The old order of world trade destroyed the industrial base of the US and Europe, it also neglected India's modernization, happening with the unwitting cooperation and connivance of the business interests of the US and Europe. It will do little for India. India must also change it's industrial structure and modernization effort to fit into this new world and bring it's strengths to build a new world in which the US, EU and India modernize their economies, manufacturing base, and infrastructure in a win-win for all sides.

This report in the WSJ by Peterson and Hackman shows how the American Health Care Act proposed by Speaker Paul Ryan provides less financial support and allows premiums to go higher for seniors approaching retirement in the 50-64 year age group. Premiums are allowed to go up 5 times that of premiums of young people in the Ryan House  plan compared to 3 times in the Affordable Care Act. Subsidies in the form of tax incentives provide $2000 to younger people going up by age not income to $4000 in the Ryan House plan. By contrast someone 60 years old making $20,000 a year can get Affordable Care Act credit of $9874, and making $40,000 a credit of $6752, according to analysis by Kaiser Family Foundation. The Ryan plan makes health care costs lower for young people in an effort to bring more young people who use less services into the system to support its overall financial condition. Another feature of the Ryan Plan is that it allows only for CPI index +1% even if health care costs are rising faster. Deep cuts to Medicaid affect lower income seniors on Medicare. As a result the AARP organization representing seniors has come out in opposition to the Ryan bill. The GOP plan wants to reduce premium costs yet in the process it makes vulnerable seniors with lower incomes pay more, which is likely to hurt Republicans who won by winning a large part of the senior vote. ...

Dyeing a pair of jeans requires 100 litres of water for the dyeing process and 15% of artificial synthetic dyes make their way into waterways as pollution. In this report The Hindu shows how centuries old indigo plants are being revived, many of them native to India. These plants contain 0.5% of Indican which exposed to oxygen produces the blue substance Indigotin. It is one of the few naturally based dyes for cotton fabrics. Other plants native to Idia also produce dyes that are less harmful to the environment. These dyes replace synthetic dyes made from petrochemical derivatives.

The work of Padma Shri Vankar, formerly of IIT Kanpur and her colleagues has helped identify and create dye extraction and dyeing methods for several plant species. This includes Nepal barberry of Arunachal, wild canna , Flame of the Forest from which colors for Holi festival are derived.

A tipping point happens when a small push can create a large outcome. Energy experts say we are at tipping points for renewable energy because cost of renewables solar and wind plants is now lower than fossil fuel new plants. Another tipping point is when new renewable energy plants have less cost than old fossil fuel plants. Another tipping point is when storage and production of renewables cost less than new fossil fuel plants. The first is already here and the second and third points are being reached in 2023 and 2024. Another tipping point is the confidence point and this is when it is no longer necessary to use fossil fuels because the costs are just too high. Once this is reached renewables are the first choice around the world. The world is now reaching this confidence point. Germany's Energy and Economy Minister Habeck says Germany will be 80% on renewable energy by 2030.
