Sharp drop in consumption with weaker retail sales, to 0.3% caused the slowdown. It was also attributed to seasonal factors. with a warm winter reducing energy spending. Expectations did not keep up with the hard data on spending. A Trump bump is expected with growth in the range of 2% for the rest of the year.

Binyamin Applebaum of the NYT Editorial Board says the gap from 1972 to 2021 of 21% of GDP in spending and 17% of GDP in taxes taken in is a serious problem because it creates $31 trillion in debt and over 475 billion in interest payments each year. This editorial in the WSJ says Argentina's president Macri has taken the right steps for the economy by devaluation of the peso and lifting capital controls. The peso exchange rate fell to 13.3 to the dollar from the central bank peg of 9.8. The central bank raised its short term lending rate to 35-38%, sending signals to capital markets that it was ready to intervene if needed so that the peso would not fall too far, and preserving stability. President Macri is planning to remove the export taxes on wheat, corn and beef, and cutting taxes on soyabeans to increase output.
