The shift to digital from newsprint for newspapers in the U.S. is taking place in gradual steps. Print ad still account for 86% of $24 billion in revenues for the newspapers in 2011, according to the Newspaper Association of America. About 45 million buyers for the 1400 newspapers in the U.S. put their hands on a printed paper edition each day. At the same time print revenues have fallen by half since 2007. So as not to overly disturb the existing customer base for newsprint papers, and wary of the still developing revenue model with lower revenues of the digital newspapers, Advance Publications is making a gradual shift to three days a week from daily papers. In 2009 it moved the An Arbor News to two print editions weekly and in early 2012 it shifted 7 other daily papers in local communities of Michigan to 3 times a week print editions. The pulbback has shifted readers to the paper's websites. Local communties depend on papers in a crisis such as the one that hit Louisiana with Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Circulation for the Times-Picayune in New Orleans has declined by half to 133, 557 daily in March 2012. Yet the digital edition has a distinct advantage because journalists continued to provide reports online when the hurricane knocked out printing presses. The advantage continues with the lighter iPad tablet devices which will make the papers accessible in a convenient hand holdable way. The problem is with the revenue stream which has not been established in a convincing way for digital as yet so that it would support hiring journalists. As it shifts to online reporting on its site Nola.com, Advance publications will shift to 3 print editions per week in New Orleans. And this will mean laying off 50 journalists, and covering a region with 1.3 million people with the remaining 100 journalists. Advance Publications will do the same for its papers in Birmingham and Huntsville in Alabama. For journalists like Caroline Little, a former publisher of the Washingtonpost.com, the scary thing is that fewer and fewer journalists are supported by the online model, and yet the shift to digital is unmistakable. For reaching younger readers not accustomed to holding a print newspaper, it is also the only way forward. ...

The goal is to improve US-Russia relations. Because this also involves ending the Ukraine war that is destroying a whole generation of young men in Russia and Ukraine, US is exploring ways to end that war through early discussions to get a sense of Russian perceptions.This is why the US does not need the Europeans or the Ukrainians at the table. Plans by France's Sarkozy government to increase the VAT (value added tax) to 19% from 16%, and reduce the amount companies have to pay for pensions and social welfare costs, making this up with the extra proceeds from the Social VAT. The argument is that imported products would take up part of the burden of the social welfare system. The Socialists who oppose the move say this will lead to lowering employee pay and a push by unions for higher wages, which will offset the benefits of such a move and reduce France's competitive edge in wages. As France faces a possible downgrade in its credit rating the focus has shifted on taking action in such areas as the Social VAT, and a move to allow working hours and pay to vary with demand. German competitiveness improved with action taken by the German government in these areas. Germany raised the VAT from 16% to 19% in 2007. Sarkozy will discuss these proposals with business and union leaders on January 18, 2011.

Keith Bradsher visits Guangzhou, China, just as prime minister Wen Jiabao tells the National People's Congress that China is changing its priorities from high growth to sustainable development. As recently as 2007 GDP growth reached 14%! The minimum wage is expected to rise 13% each year under the five year plan. Even with the increase in wages owning an apartment is unaffordable in Guangzhou- a 1000 square feet apartment costs upward of $300,000, showing the extent to which the bubble in real estate prices affects young people who cannot afford to own an apartment. A new graduate with marketable skills such as computer engineering makes about $6000 a year, putting owning an apartmet beyond reach. Another change he notices today is that during visits to construction sites he does not see flood lit sites at night. This used to be the case because builders were scrambling to build. With government policies discouraging the property bubble there is no longer a need for work at night. The focus now has shifted to build low income housing....

After the 2008 election of president Obama rural whites left the Democratic Party, Following the election of president Trump educated suburbanites left the Republican Party. These two trends have accelerated as seen in the 2018 U.S. Congressional elections. Democrats won in and around major cities, and Republicans won in rural and small town America. Democrats won 27 GOP Republican COngressional seats to win the majority. Republicans added 2 seats to their Senate majority.  The electorate is sharply divided in terms of education in a way that is regressive and not good for America, and in a way that has never happened before. Republicans share of of House districts with lowest shares of college education bachelors degrees increased from 44% in 1998 to 60% in 2018. Democrats share of House districts with the highest share of Bachelors degrees went up from 50% in 1998 to 81% in 2018. Much of the Democrats support from educated suburbanites comes from lopsided support from educated women. The result is that the Republican Party is trading faster growing counties for slower growing smaller counties and now has a base of older voters. The Democrats have to find a leader who can rally support from this new combination of educated suburbanites, younger voters, and minorities. And big issues are at stake. About 77% of people in recent polls now support a national health care insurance like than in the UK and Canada. Poor reading skills and reading comprehension in school tests show a need for greater investment  in education. Infrastructure investment is a big priority for a decade that has yet to be tackled directly. Of the 50 new Democrats in the House of Representatives 24 campaigned on a promise for a national health insurance like that in Canada or UK. The focus on economic issues would move the Democratic Party back to where it was in all the post war years till the distractions from cultural issues  in the last decade shifted its focus from its historical base support of working class voters. ...

Following corruption scandals in Brazil, the situation in Peru involves the company Odebrecht which figured widely in construction contracts in Brazil. Peru's Congress is opening proceedings for impeachment of President Pedro Kuczynski on charges of improper payments of $782,000 by Odebrecht to Kuczynski. The situation is not new to Peru, as amazingly the culture of "he robs but he also builds" has some roots in Latin America, only to be rejected by a growing middle class by 2017. Previous president Alejandro Toledo  was indicted by prosecutors for taking payments of $20 million from Odebrecht in the early 2000s. Former president Ollanta Humala is in jail awaiting trial. The mood is changing now even though a major problem is that other politicians in Congress in Peru and Brazil suffer from some of the same faults as the government in power.  In Peru a major sticking point is the unfinished Costa Verde project, a road in which $100 million contract was given to the Odebrect company, and $4 million in bribes given according to prosecutors. The road to the airport from the city of Lima remains unfinished, with much of the planned road to cut traffic time on congested roads is now just highway dirt. The public attitude is that they always thought the next president would "be different." Following repeated disenchantment the attitude has definitely shifted, yet one problem remains. The old set of politicians are still there in Brazil, Peru, and other countries, when a transition is needed. ...

US president DJT meets with Rutte of the Netherlands Jan 21, 2026. He says he has come up with a framework for US acquisition of Greenland, rights title, and ownership of the island for US security and world security. He called for immediate negotiations with the goal of US acquisition of the island of Greenland.  The political situation is evolving in this way. Germany is key in the developments for the US to acquire Greenland. Britain is standing it out with the Nordic countries as Starmer has shifted to the side of Sweden and Denmark with little to gain for the Labor government which is facing local elections and popularity of Reform UK Party. In this situation Italy and Germany have taken a posture of not making any statements. Germany facing Russian intervention in Ukrain on the east needs the US for joint security at a critical juncture when Russia and the US have agreed to respect each others area of influence. Italy is run by a northern Italy party leaning to the anti-immigration stance taken by DJT in the US. It makes little difference to Netherlands, Germany/Austria/Switzerland and Italy who controls Greenland and in the context of Russian advances and nuclear weapons technology would prefer US move to acquire Greenland and rapidly build up defenses in Greenland with large investments. To not disturb the alliance's northern countries (Britain and Nordics) Germany has taken a back seat to the rhetoric yet will be in the deciding role because of its stable government, support from all parts of the political spectrum for US control of Greenland except for the coalition junior partner the SPD. The SPD Defense Minister Pistorius may form parts of the SPD that see US owning the island as positive in the bolstering of its defense capabilities with th $1 trillion outlay in the budgeted investments. Starmer may have misread DJT and US support as the US president can make a very good case for US owning Greenland and getting Denmark to accept the offer of Harry Truman of $100 million made in 1947, updated for what that sum is today which is $1.5 billion. As DJT pointed out Macron has no longevity for his government in France, and cannot speak for that country. As Treasury Secretary Bessent who along with Rubio is part of the team that will work with the president says, Denmark is irrelevant to the issues US faces for US and world security. It is a small country, Denmark, with a population of 6 million most of it in the area near Copenhagen. Houston or Dallas has a much larger population. For Denmark to decide on momentous issues of US security for the entire eastern seaboard or world security, with ownership essential for the US,  when climate has made the Arctic important, is something the US does not accept.   ...

Adjusted for the 35,000 workers on strike at Verizon counted as unemployed, the 38,000 jobs figure in the government report is still considered quite low. Especially striking even as unemployment drops for May from 5.0% to 4.7% is that the drop is attributed to people dropping out of the work force. The average monthly gain for the March through May is 116,000 jobs well short of the 240,000 jobs added on average in 2014-2015. Average hourly earnings were up 0.2% in May and up 2.5% for the year. A widely accepted measure of unemployment that includes workers too discouraged to look for work or working part time because of a lack of full time job was at 9.7%. The labor force participation rate was at 62.6%.

Michio Suzuki of Hammamatsu, Shizuoka, Japan, comes across as a rare figure in Japan's industrial history as one who spanned the entire period of Japan's rise as industrial power running a major textile and automobile company from 1909 when he founded Suzuki to 1978. Starting with manufacture of textile looms Suzuki saw the potential of motorized transportation in the 1920's. After the war it shifted from wartime production to introduce the first e-bike Power Free in 1952. He was succeeded by his son in law Osamu Suzuki who became another icon in automobiles by running Suzuki from 1978 to 2021 for 43 years. Between the two Michio and Osamu it spans a period 1909-2022 of 113 years, the period of the Industrial Revolution in Europe and Asia. In 1979 Osamu introduced the car for small spaces, the Alto, that is one of the most sold cars. In 1980 Osamu started the partnership of Suzuki with Maruti of India, that brought the Alto to Indian streets changing the industrial landscape of India. Friedman says the fairly obvious that Democrats in the US and Social Democrats in Europe readily grasp. That unrestricted immigration on the southern border in the US or in the southern border of Europe actually does little to improve the situation for people in the US and Europe or the people in the countries migrants are leaving because of unsettled conditions. Germany has shifted to a policy of becoming involved in development in Africa. Japan's International Cooperation Agency has worked for many years in African countries. The US has its own efforts to assist Mexico through trade and manufacturing. It is working with Central American countries that are a major source of migrants on the southern border at different times. Mette Frederiksen, head of the Danish Social Democrats government, has put it very well when she said that the only people who are getting hurt by open border policies are the working class families in Denmark. This is true also of other parts of the EU and the US. Simply by letting in migrants, a policy that is harmful to workers and families. Conservatives are looking to make political gains and further their own interests, indifferent to social divisions and increasing lack of upward mobility in society. Immigration has become the tool for many of the conservative parties that have used it in ways harmful to interests of workers and families, in Britain, in the US, and in the EU. One has only to see the large delegation that Mette Frederiksen led to India for discussions with prime minister Modi, the economic ministries, and business, to see how she did the right thing on a huge scale. Denmark is the world leader in logistics with Maersk, and in renewable energy. Denmark and the Nordic countries are working closely with a country of 1.4 billion people to improve the logistics to make India comparable to China in manufacturing for export. And similarly in renewable energy technologies. The Nordic countries and the EU have simply by these actions done more to uplift hundreds of millions of people in Asia than anything that ever happened in the history of the world. And the US is also working with India in the same way. India acts as a stable source of growth and model for a whole stretch of Asia from Indonesia to Vietnam. The population lifted out of poverty - 2 billion people. ...

The new data security law that went into effect Sept 1, 2021, limits the amount of sensitive information China will share with foreign companies, and investors. All data related activities are subject to government oversight says this report in WSJ, including collection, storage, use and transmission. Companies in China now are reluctant to share information.  Because the law is ambiguous about what is sensitive information this makes companies more reluctant. The result is a China that is more opaque than before. It is driven by antagonism in the US over the effect on American workers of manufacturing and supply chains shifted to China. The response of the Chinese government is to turn the country inward, looking to self sufficiency, data security, and an environment that looks at foreigners with suspicion, says this report in WSJ. The pandemic has increased this view of foreigners in China, after China's experience with a deteriorating trade relationship with the US. Xi Jinping has not left the country since the pandemic started in January 2020. China has also seen an alarming drop in passengers going overseas or coming into China from 50 million in the first 8 months of 2019, to 1 million in the first 8 months of 2021, a drop of 49 million passengers, according to data from the Civil Aviation Administration. Government directives are to minimize foreign travel as a result of the pandemic. People in the US see the operations in China of companies such as Apple and now Tesla as a sign of how well the system of international cooperation is functioning without realizing that these companies never had the understanding of the history and culture of the country after two centuries of struggle against colonialism. When the situation takes a different turn as it has after Mr. Trump raised the issue of American workers and loss of manufacturing, and after the pandemic created unexpected distrust, there is very little these companies have to offer to keep the relationship between two of the world's population blocs, between North America and the closely related population of South America, with the people of China, a billion people on each side. This shows that the relationship cannot be left only to the business and private sector driven by profit and business interests, that all sections of the population in China and in the US need to be involved for a stable relationship with ongoing human and cultural contacts at all levels. ...

Macy's story is told by figures showing an increasing share in a shrinking department store business. Macy's increased its share of department store sales to 44% in 2013, from 33% in 2006 by acquiring other department stores. As a result the improvement in recent years disguises some serious weakness in the company's strategies. It took Macy many years before launching an off price chain to carry discounted merchandise- only now getting off the ground under the Backstage chain. The change in consumer buying habits after the 2008 recession continues today, buyers are frugal and waiting for markdowns which take longer at Macy's and come quickly at TJ Maxx. As a result Macy's sales are declining in 2015. This benefits discount retailers carrying name brands at lower prices such as TJ Maxx, which has about the same sales as Macy's and over 3 times the market value. Macy's share price has fallen about 40% so far in 2015. As other stores such as J.C. Penneys have shifted and adopted strategies offering more value and everyday competitive pricing Macy's faces the risk of being too slow to change....

Pfizer has a development team of 10000 researchers in one location near San Diego, California, to develop new drugs for cancer even though some experts say the search for cancer drugs is devilishly complicated. The causes of cancer at the molecular level are complicated and vary even from person to person for the same cancer. Says one expert this also raises questions about the benefit to people as a large amount of resources are shifted to areas like cancer that affect fewer people than other diseases, and where the existing drugs have only prolonged life marginally, in some cases even as low as a few months at a huge cost of thousands of dollars. Tarceva for pancreatic cancer for example only prolongs life by 12 days at a cost of $3500 per month. 860 cancer drugs are being tested in clinical trials according to the trade group of the pharmaceutical industry. This is more than twice the number for heart disease and stroke, and nearly twice the number for AIDS and all other infdectious diseases combined, and nearly twice the number for Alzheimier's and all neurological dieases combined....

The New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo filed a civil fraud lawsuit against Ernst & Young LLP. Cuomo wrote in the complaint that "Ernst & Young substantially assisted Lehman Brothers, now bankrupt, to engage in a massive accounting fraud." The suit says Ernst & Young ignored warnigs from Lehman employees and from its own staff about the improper transactions. Lehman shifted $50 billion in assets off its balance sheet to foreign banks at critical financial reporting periods with a promise to buy back the securities at a premium price a few days later. With the cash held in the meantime, Lehman would pay down other debts, appearing to have less debt and give investors a better impression about the firm's financial condition than was really the case. Lehman and Bear Stearns were the most highly leveraged investment banks during the financial crisis of 2008. The unraveling of Lehman led to cracks in the world financial system because of interrelationships in the banking system. By taking this action the New York Attorney General's office is taking an important step to prevent the recurrence of such systemic crises from buildup of excessive leverage in the financial system....

Kraft is looking at its staple pantry products in a different light to give them new life. Kraft products like Bull's Eye barbecue sauce, Chips Ahoy, Oscar Mayer, Miracle Whip and Philadelphia Cream Cheese are all getting new marketing campaigns. Kraft marketing executives say the idea is to work not just on the rational side as they have done in the past by emphasizing price. For Macaroni and Cheese, Kraft would say to cost conscious consumers in this recession, it costs about 1 dollar a box. One headline even described this as a small price for a big cheese eating grin. Now the advertsing budget has been increased by 30% to $50 million, and the focus has shifted to bringing out the emotional attachment to this product of young and old alike. After an initial period of a year Japanese companies are now making the move to pull back some of the production shifted overseas with the yen at 80 to the dollar. Canon made 40% of its product overseas in 2009 before the shift to 60% by 2013. Now it is shifting production back home to reach 40% overseas production. Other consumer electronics companies Panasonic, Sharp, Daikin, are shifting production back to Japan. This is similiar to the shift back to the U.S. of products made overseas as costs have risen in China and other Asian countries. The sharp swing in exchange rates is accelerating the trend. Auto companies Subaru, Toyota, Nissan, Honda are continuing plans to manufacture close to customers in the U.S. Shorter product cycles make it possible to shift production for electronics companies compared to longer product cycles at auto companies. Murata Manufacturing will continue to make smartphone parts close to its customers in China, lifting production overseas from 14% to 30%. As a result exports have increased in Nov. 2014 by 10.8% from the prior year and imports up 2.2%, according to the Finance Ministry....

Zhu Changhong plays a key role in investing China's $3.5 trillion dollars in foreign reserves. He is part of the management at China's State Administration of Foreign Exchange or SAFE, a division of the central bank. He maintains a low profile, yet he has played a critical role in shifting investment into Japanese and U.S. equities and bonds issued by the European Financial Stability Fund, reducing the risk exposure to U.S. Treasury's as the U.S. Federal Reserve changes monetary policy. From 45% of China's foreign reserves invested in U.S. government bonds, or $1.11 trillion, in June 2010, SAFE under Zhu's guidance reduced the allocation to 35%, or $1.14 trillon, in June 2012, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis. He has an interesting background. Coming from Anhui province, he studied physics at the University of Chicago, then shifted to life as a trader in financial markets at Allianz's PIMCO investment firm. After spending 20 years in the U.S., Zhu returned in 2009 as chief investment officer of SAFE. He was drawn back to China by another expatriate Yi Gang, a SAFE director who was an economics professor at Indiana University- Purdue University, Indianapolis....

Portugal showed growth in GDP of 1.1% in the second quarter of 2013 from the prior quarter, according to Eurostat. Higher petroleum exports and better prices were part of the reason for the improvement in exports. At the same time Portugal's business leaders and mid sized businesses are improving competitiveness and exports as a way to create growth. Here the NYT's Raphael Minder shows the progress in exporting olive oil at a midsized olive producing farm business in the Alentejo region of Portugal. Morais de Almeida and Miguel de Almeida shifted direction to export to Brazil at this 127 year old olive farm business called Herdade de Manantiz. Manantiz had to use European and Portuguese rural development subsidies for 40% of the cost to put in its first irrigation system, as banks have reduced credit. The Almeida family tapped into family savings for the rest of the funds. This investment of 197,000 euros will help quadruple production at the 529 acre olive farm and generate exports. Brazil took in 524 bottles, and buyers are being contacted in Sweden and Japan for the oil produced from galega olives, unique to Portugal....

The life of one young family with children since 2001 when the couple married from midle class prosperity to surviving on handouts with things deteriorating rapidly after 2003 when Al Quaeda bombed a holy mosque of the Shiite faith starting a wave of Shiite and Sunni conflict and making it impossible for Sunni and Shiites to live together. There are about 2 million refugees or displaced persons in Iraq largely a result of the Sunni and Shiite conflict and defacto partition of Iraq as Sunnis move to Sunni areas and Shiites to shiite areas much like what happened in the Punjab during partition and the creation of Pakistan. Another 2 million are refugees in Syria and Jordan. In 2008 its 5 years since the US invasion of Iraq and there is an assessment of what has happened since. The war and the insurgency has led to 180,000 killed according to one estimate by Iraqi Ministry of Health. There were elections leading to a Shiite dominated government and regional autonomy for the Kurdish part, but after Sunnis from the old regime took up arms as insurgents the Americans largely failed to provide the security to ordinary Iraqis. Then after local militias of Sunnis and Shiites took over their areas security, it was largely provided by the militias in their areas and the whole tone of the conflict shifted to that between sectarian communities. Since 2007 the tribal leaders who supported the insurgents shifted their allegiance to the Americans, who essentially now ensure security and transition for an interim administration, while a defacto partition of Iraq has already ocurred and is being completed. The Americans will essentially have reversed the creation of Sunnis as a privileged minority, which happened under the British after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire turned the area over to the British, and the British crushed a Shiite uprising. Leading afterwards to the creation of an independent Iraq from territories put together from the British colonial period following the Ottoman collapse. Now the area reverts to what it was before either the Ottomans or the British to what it was when it was a Shiite region, without the borders such as Iran and Iraq and Shiite religious centers extended from Iran into Iraq, which may account for the strong religious feeling of Shiite communities regardless of these borders. What of the Sunni minority around and in provinces near Baghdad? These communities could only prosper with some kind of neighborly coexistence with the Shiite communities of the region, which is the best the U.S. can do for the region promote some kind of neighborly coexistence between the communties and exit gracefully. ...

This editorial in the WSJ after the New Hampshire primary, points out that the attacks by Republican candidates on each other instead of educating voters on Donald Trump, will only lead to them falling behind. During the Republican television debate the sharp exchange between Christie and Rubio hurt both candidates in New Hampshire. It says that one of Trump's important weakness is that one third of the voters who voted for Trump have reservations about him. Trump was also lagging behind in voter confidence in his ability to handle an international crisis. Ted Cruz was not able to win big with non evangelical voters in a state on the East coast, which would affect him as a Republican nominee in November 2016. How a small Kansas town of Grinnell in America finds a way to deal with the rural-urban divide and covid anxiety generated in the tumultuous years of 2020-2021, is the subject with pictures of this report in the WSJ. Grinnell is heartland America and its residents find a way to set Kansas and America in the right direction. One one side some resident worried they would end up like Minneapolis or Portland with protesters. An incident of drivers along Highway 70 emptying shelves of toilet paper in neighborhood stores is seen negatively by some  Grinnell residents and leads to forming an Emergency Preparedness Group to prevent outside agitators from creating problems. Others like the Enlightened Ladies Group try to calm things down. Gene Tilton, 84, and his son 63 years, whose family arrived in Kansas in 1880's did'nt see the need for forming some sort of vigilante group. He raises cattle and crops on a 10,000 acre farm. Michael Machen who practiced medicine in Gove County for 35 years also felt the same way and believed law enforcement could tackle the problem if there was one. Sheriff Mesch attended the Gove County emergency Preparedness Group public meeting by invitation in January 2021. This about the time when the Capitol in Washington DC was stormed by protesters and the country was divided after the election. At that time after 19 months of coronavirus deaths, racial unrest and political violence America was on edge, communities all over America were struggling with the idea that the immediate threat they faced was from other Americans not foreign adversaries. The sheriff told everyone at the Emergency Preparedness Group's public meeting where he stood- law enforcement could handle any threat and he didn't anticpate anything his deputies could not handle. He told the Emergency Preparedness Group that he appreciated their sentiment though, if he needed help he would ask, yet concluded that is the only way. From that rebuff by the sheriff the Group paused its activity and shifted its message to offering to help anyone deal with the deep cold spell in February, to cope with snow, tornadoes, fires, rattlesnake bites and similar hazards. They sponsored first aid classes, and a "Homesteader Gardening Class." Soon their idea was "we're here to help people, the last thing we want is for people to be uncomfortable."
