President Macron of France puts forward the basic building blocks for an agreement to reduce tensions with Iran. In a speech to the General Assembly of the United Nations he says that there should be negotiations between Iran, its regional neighbors, the U.S. , European countries and China. The Obama period nuclear deal of 2015 failed because of a lack of a comprehensive settlement and including Iran's neighbors in the region. Macron pointed out that the U.S. approach under president Trump of "maximum pressure" with tighter economic sanctions has produced a response from Iran of maximum pressure on its neighbors, including the attack on Saudi oil facilities with drones that took out half of the Saudi oil supplies. Macron put forward five issues for negpotiations to focus on: certaity that Iran never acquires nuclear weapons, solution to the Yemen civil war, a regional security plan that addresses other conflicts, ensuring security of maritime navigation especially in Straits of Hormuz, lifting of economic sanctions. He pointed out that "today we have a risk of serious conflict based on miscalculation and disproportionate responses." Mr. Trump even alluded to this when he told reporters after the dismissal of John Bolton as National Security Adviser, saying Bolton made Trump look like a voice of moderation. A lot depends on who are the advisers and whether moderation is exercised on all sides.  Macron, Merkel and Britain's prime minister Johnson met with Rouhani on the sidelines of the UN meetings to encourage dialogue. Countries likely to be severely affected by oil shutoff through the Straits of Hormuz are Japan, South Korea, India and China, and are quietly pushing for an easing of tensions.  ...

Saudi Arabia is accelerating the IPO of Saudi Aramco after the attack on Saudi oil facilities by missiles and drones. Saudis decided to import oil to keep their commitments to supply oil to other countries as the attack took out half the country's oil production. The IP instead of floating 5% of Saudi oil company Aramco will now float 10%, double the initial target. The 10% could raise $200 billion and help the company recover. This depends on the valuation being close to the Saudi estimate of $2 trillion. Analysts estimate valuation at $1.5 trillion which would raise $150 billion.  There are differences in how large the IPO should be in Saudi Arabia, between the government and the management of Aramco. Mr. Falih, head of Aramco was removed after working for a 5% limited float of Aramco, when the government favored 10% because of growing needs in defense and industrial, and new city sectors.  The broad contours of the plan are to float 1% in 2019, and another 1% on the Saudi domestic stock market, Tadawul. Followed by a 3% listing on an international stock exchange, Tokyo a possible choice. The Saudi government wants to float another 5% after this. Saudi officials and contractors estimate it will take months for production to be restored to levels before the attacks.  ...

The UK Supreme Court rules that minority government prime minister Boris Johnson's suspension of parliament was unlawful. Judges led by Lady Hale said, "the effect on the fundamentals of democracy was extreme."  Lady Hale emphasized that the ruling in the case was "not about when and on what terms" the UK left the EU- it was about the decision to suspend parliament. She said it was unlawful because "it had the effect of frustrating or preventing the ability of parliament to carry out its constitutional functions without reasonable justification."  The decision of the court was unanimous for the 11 justices. The court also criticized the length of the suspension, saying there was no reason "let alone a good reason" for this. This makes the suspension of parliament null and void, and of no effect. Speaker Bercrow called immediately for parliament to meet today to meet without prime minister's questions to attend to important matters. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn called for the prime minister to resign at the Labour party conference in Brighton. The call to resign comes from the governments in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and from Tory MP's including John Major, a former prime minister. Boris Johnson says he will respect the ruling but that Britain will still leave the EU by October 31st even though parliament has legislated for an extension beyond October 31st.  ...

A video view of the damaged oil facilities of Aramco in Saudi Arabia. A proxy war waged between Saudis and Iran with Houthi rebels in Yemen have worsened the situation in the Straits of Hormuz. Tensions were high, an attack on oil facilities was not expected. About half of Saudi oil production was put out of use in the attack by low flying missiles that evaded radar defenses. Saudis plan to meet oil export commitments by importing oil. President Trump imposed sanctions on the Iranian central bank, and at the same time said he would meet with Iran's president Rouhani for talks if arranged.  The European Union called for talks to renegotiate the Iran nuclear deal considering all issues nuclear, oil, and political issues in the region. The effect of Trump administration sanctions on Iran's economy have led to worsening relations. Japan, South Korea, India and China are affected by the U.S. effort to limit imports of Iranian oil. As tensions rose Japan with limited reserves made efforts to reduce tensions and bring the parties together. Mr. Trump fired his National Security Adviser in an effort to open up ideas for a renegotiation of the Iran nuclear deal on a comprehensive basis including oil and political issues in the region. ...

The Times of London reports on the decision by the Supreme Court of Britain that Boris Johnson abused his powers and acted unlawfully in suspending parliament. Separately BBC analysis shows that even though Johnson is relying on polls and planning to run people vs. parliament this means that its the courts as part of what he calls the establishment he is running against.  Nigel Farage called for Johnson's adviser Cummings to resign showing that the Leave campaign is not what it was when Britain voted to leave the EU in the first referendum on June 23, 2016, now over 3 years and 3 months since then.

The sudden collapse of Thomas Cook, and the immediate layoff of its 20,000 employees comes as a shock as it is an old company trading since 1841 on the stock exchange. The name was synonymous with travel in Britain and in British Commonwealth countries. The analysis in the Times of London shows management was to blame. First with overexpansion under one CEO, even though online travel booking was taking off. He was fired, and followed by sharp cutbacks with another CEO who was fired, followed by last minute efforts to save the company as it faced huge debt loads and interest load even though its revenues were up by 6%.

In a situation similar to that faced by Jet Airways, an Indian airline, which also had overexpansion and debt load problems, the banks had second thoughts and turned down any new financing to support the company as being too risky.

Researchers in the U.S. and China team up to shows difference in the way boys and girls use their smartphones and computers. The boys tend to favor video games and the girls preferring social contact spending time going through social media programs. Evidence shows women less likely to develop internet gaming disorders, and women using programs like Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram more often than boys. Girls feel the ill effects of using these programs more than boys, often driving parents crazy.

The idea is to defuse the migration issue roiling Italy and other countries. Other efforts are to reduce migrants from leaving their home countries.

A coordinated release of petroleum reserves from the International Energy Agency and 30 participating countries is planned in the event something like the attack on Saudi oil facilities happens. About 5% of the worlds oil supplies were put out in the attack. If 7% are lost then the IEA would step in to call for release of petroleum reserves of individual countries. As of July 2019 1.5 billion barrels of oil are in storage in emergency reserves. U.S. SPR reserves are estimated at 644 million barrels and the figures are 100 million barrels for each of Germany, Japan and France, and China at 344 million barrels. These man made caverns are as long as 2000 feet.

The last time this release happened was in 2011 after the Libyan war disruptions.

The Labour Party manifesto written at the Labour Conference will include integrating all private schools into the state sector "to end hierarchy, elitism and selection in education." Labour's Annual Conference is endorsing this idea. In its first budget Labour would withdraw charitable status, as well as subsidies and tax privileges from private schools, forcing "the endowments, investments and properties held by private schools" to be "distributed democratically and fairly across the country's educational institutions." University quotas for private school students would be capped at 7%. Currently at elite institutions this is between 30 to 40%. There is a mood in Britain that the boys club of Cameron, Gove, Johnson and others in a small group of people around Cameron has led to the situation in Britain today. Cameron is considered today as one of the most unpopular prime ministers in British history. Calling the referendum for Brexit by Cameron is seen as an action pursued for narrow political self interest.The very narrow education and outlook, and limited abilities of this group are seen as a contrast to the people who governed Britain in earlier decades. ...

She eats a lot of carbs, rice even white rice, pasta. She starts with a pre-run snack of a small banana and half tablespoon of natural peanut butter, coffee. Post run it is a bagel with avocado. Lunch is green salad with avocado. Dinner may be rice with shrimp and vegetables. Experts say training programs are highly individualistic. A fit person takes about 3 months to be ready for marathon running. Long runs are crucial. A 12-18 hour rest period after a marathon is suggested to allow tissue healing. Andrew Lownie's book provides glimpses into the lives of the Mountbattens, Edwina and Dickie. Mountbatten was the head of the British government in India in 1946 as negotiations were started with Nehru, Gandhi and Jinnah for independent India. The Cabinet Mission (including Cripps) plan of 1946 was  to setup a federation in India with provinces in A, B, and C categories. A being the Central Provinces, United Provinces, Bombay, Madras and other parts of what is now India, B being the Punjab, Sind and what is now Pakistan, and C being the region of Bengal, what is now Bangladesh and West Bengal.This was rejected by Nehru, Sardar Patel, and the Indian National Congress, leading to  Jinnah's call for action, a civil war, and the partition of India 9 months before the plan date of June 1948, in chaotic circumstances, in a hurried manner. The legacy of that two year period is with us today in the upheavals in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, drawing the U.S. and western nations also into endless wars. The period 1939-1941 is covered when Edwina's rather aimless life upto that point changed completely with service to war wounded and for the Red Cross. She also visited the U.S. in 1941 when Mountbatten was given command of an aircraft carrier at Norfolk, Virginia, visiting 28 states. Edwina made up for he aimless years by relentlessly pushing herself to be an equal to her husband in the war effort. This has given the couple their fascinating character. It was also a period of great change as the Labour party under Clement Atlee winning a post war election made the decision to end the British Empire in India. The war had depleted British wealth and Britain lacked the resources to continue the Empire in India. The job of managing the transition went to Mountbatten, a naval officer in the Royal Navy, coming in the tumultuous years of 1946-48 with the quick partition of India under Mountbatten in 1947. Mountbatten stayed after independence in August 1947 as the first Governor General of India.  Edwina and Dickie Mountbatten struck a friendship with Jawaharlal Nehru, and this review in The Hindu shows Jawaharlal, Edwina, Dickie and their daughter Pamela having tea at the residence in Shimla, 1946. Nehru's rejection of the Cabinet Mission plan leading to the appointment of Mountbatten as Viceroy was partly based on his idea that priorities for India post independence was modernizing the economy and reducing poverty. Seven decades later the priorities are still the same, following the experience of Japan, South Korea and China at modernizing the economies in east Asia requiring a greatly accelerated effort.    ...
