Laurent Berger, head of the French Confederation of Labor, C.F.D.T., is a moderating force in France as president Macron leads an effort to make a revision to France's labor code. With a large parliamentary majority president Macron is expected to push for a shift to a Scandinavian version of "flexible security," that allows companies and the economy to adjust the work force, introduce retraining and create flexibility so that new jobs can be created. Bill Keller tells U.S. president Obama that if he is serious about looking at the right path in Egypt he should go back and read his own speech made in May 2011, at the beginning of the Arab Spring. He points out that the Eastern European countries under Soviet supported communist regimes did not evolve into democracies without help and guidance from the western world. It took years of work and is still in progress with the European Union leaders taking on the issues of authoritarian tendencies in Ukraine, Romania, and other countries. Early on the reason why European Union leaders, Germany, the UK, France, Spain and other nations were very sensitive to the issue of genocide in Bosnia and Kosovo, was that their idea of Europe after the horrors of the last major war were for a civilized Europe with no place for leaders like Milosevic. President Clinton joined the effort and the western world was firm in its resolve which continued till the transfer of Milosevic to the Hague Tribunal, and the negotiations for a different Serbia to enter the EU completed only recently, nearly 25 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. These are long and difficult processes because of history, conflicts, poverty, prejudice, ignorance and demagoguery, but the EU, the U.S. and its partners withstood the test. The Arab world is different but the aspirations for freedom and economic progress are the same, and the U.S. should follow the same values and instincts in the way forward in the Middle East. The path chosen by the military in Egypt of firing on civilians and suppressing all dissenters is not sustainable, says Keller. ...

The German Chambers of Commerce and Industry President Heinrich Driftmann told reporters in Berlin that the new government should overhaul the tax code and improve credit access for companies. The German chamber wants to see changes to the corporate and inheritance taxes. He said that even if it was considered taboo companies needed more flexibility in the labor market. Merkel has promised labor unions that keeping social protections will be a priority in her administration. Economists say it will be difficult to cut taxes because unemployment will rise to 11% in 2011 as Germany's economy contracts 5% this year, and this will mean less tax revenues and increasing costs for social spending.

Walker of the WSJ says the euro has survived the crises of the last few years, with some but not all the steps taken to avoid a repeat of the problems, and public opinion still favoring the eurozone as it looks forward to economic growth in coming years. The middle class is not attracted to risking its savings in euro denominated assets, costs of the turmoil that might be caused by leaving the euro act as a signal for caution, and in Southern Europe countries remember the days before the euro with devaluations and high inflation. With gradual economic recovery it appears that the euro is still the best option there is. Surveys show three fourths of the French oppose leaving the euro, and experts say the euro is not to blame for France's slow economic recovery- more confidence and political stability with economic renewal are seen as the ways to get France going again. The Indonesian currency, the Rupiah, has declined by 13% in 2013- by Sept. 3. It reached a level of 11,050 rupiah for one dollar on Sept 3. Economic growth has declined to 6% for the second quarter of 2013. The depreciation of the rupiah is likely to increase inflation significantly and affect the consumer spending boom in Indonesia. Indonesia had a $2.3 billion trade deficit in July 2013 after a continuing surge in imports. This will affect car prices and prices of international brands popular in the country. Toyota set the rate at 9500 rupiah to the dollar and plans to increase prices now that the rate has passed 11,000 rupiah.

Dow Chemical CEO, Anthony Liveris, is co-chair of the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership, an effort to bring together federal government, industry, universities and other groups to invest in new technologies that would generate good-quality jobs and increase U.S. competitiveness. He writes this letter in the Wall Street Journal to correct two misperceptions. The first, is that government has no significant role in nurturing an environment that is good for business and manufacturing industry. Because other countries, including China, are now operating like companies, it is important not to let the U.S. be in a disadvantageous position. Government has always been involved in its writing of tax and incentive policies, regulations, trade agreements, and creating a climate of certainty. The second, is that the loss of manufacturing capacity and job losses in the last 10 years are different from the job losses in the 1980's. These are not the low tech and less efficient manufacturing job losses of the 1980's, but job losses as a result of moving advanced manufacturing capacity and research and development centers to outside of the U.S. Of the 8 million jobs lost in the last recession, he says two million manufacturing jobs of higher pay and supporting employment in other sectors were lost. His point: its time to focus on expanding manufacturing in the U.S. because manufacturing is the sector with the highest multiplier effect on other sectors. Public-private partnerships are critical to this effort for increasing technology development and increasing investment. This view is supported by other experts....
