Dr. Ezekiel Emmanuel of the University of Pennsylvania gives this early warning on the risks of the sudden U turn in China's zero covid policy to complete reopening. He says the switch from zero covid to population wide immunity via viral spread is coming on too suddenly without preparation. He says China made three mistakes. First, the economic cost of zero covid that dropped growth and created high youth unemployment of over 20%. Second, not procuring Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines with newer technologies. Third, moving to abruptly end the zero covid policy 180 degrees in a sudden move that lacks preparation. Precipitiously ending the zero covid policy for 800 million people means rapid spread says Dr. Emmanuel. He says the key variable the R statistic that measures how many people get infected from one covid patient on average, has moved from 2 to 3 during the early stages of the pandemic to 10 with the omicron variant. Today's capital allocation system was never designed to accomplish this even as it sends hundreds of billions of dollars in one single day to a single company. Nvidia is now seeing a surge from chatbots computing coming out of ChatGPT,  leading to $184 billion change in its market value on May 25, 2023.  Nvidia was mostly a graphics processing company setup to make graphics on PC's look better. In 2006 Jensen Huang made the decision to open it up to developers to tinker with it and develop more computing capabilities. This has led to Nvidia designing much more powerful computing chips that perform thousands of calculations at the same time.   Nvidia designs the chips and sends production out to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing. Suddenly Nvidia sees its share price surge and it joins companies such as Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, and Tesla that have seen one day surge in the value of the companies by over $100 billion shown in this WSJ graph by date. Huang says he thinks that this is the beginning of a ten year period in which companies will redo their data centers to build them up with AI computing capabilities. WSJ also says China's top nuclear weapons research institute has bought these advanced chips even though it is on a US export blacklist since 1997. In 2022 the Biden administration imposed new licensing requirements on export of the most advanced chips. Since then Nvidia is following specifications for chips that allow it to export to China, says the WSJ.     ...

Vance says he is skeptical and inherently mistrustful about the constructive influence of Silicon Valley on America, on the broader economy in all parts of America, and on education expanding opportunity for all. Vance says of his stint in Silicon Valley starting in 2013 when he moved to the Bay Area after graduating in law from Yale to 2022 when he ran for the US Senate from Ohio, that it taught him something about the influence of venture capital on America. He is skeptical about its constructive influence when seen from the American heartland, from the Kansas prairies of Eisenhower to his own rust belt state of Ohio and the hinterland of Appalachia across the eastern US from New York through Tennessee to Mississippi. Vance says: "I've certainly personally been very close to the technology sector. Because of that experience, I inherently mistrust it or worry about its influence in the broader economy." WSJ's Angel Au Yeung calls it short lived but it stretched for 10 years and Vance returned to Ohio for Narya Ventures, worked with AOL founder Steve Chase on Revolution to look at what could be done in places such as Chattanooga, Tennessee, in the south and midwest with these venture concepts. Even Apple's much touted iPad succeeds as a potentially useful tech device but fails when one sees what little interest or effort Apple put into developing its educational potential to expand opportunity for all. And because tech tools alone cannot do the work of educating minds. Only human beings and knowledge, ideas in books can do this, as they have done in all of America's and Europe's past. ...

The personal savings rate which fell below zero during the housing bubble went up to 6.9% in May, according to Commerce Department numbers. This is the highest it has been since December 1993. Consumer spending posted asmall increase, personal consumption up 0.3% in May after falling the previous 2 months. The rise in personal incomes in May was 1.4%, according to the Commerce Department. Consumer attitudes also rose for the fifth month in June, up to 70.8 in June from 68.7 in May acording to the Reuters-University of Michigan consumer survey. But the survey also shows amajority saying their financial situation had worsened with job losses, fewer hours of work, or income declines.

Now that the new Brexit Party and Mr. Farage are taking votes from Conservatives and the party polling just 11% ahead of the EU elections, with Brexit Party at 34%, the Conservatives could see his faction of no-deal Brexit as a good choice to lead the Conservatives in the battle with Labour party. Not so hastily it says. Because of three reasons. The EU is not likely to negotiate concessions to Boris Johnson, much the reverse is true. A no deal Brexit would hurt the British economy, and lacks support in parliament. The Scottish people are not represented in the leadership ranks of both parties, so there is a danger of breaking up the UK, as Scots oppose Brexit. Mr. Johnson is also seen as a risky gamble because of the mess Conservatives find themselves in, handing Labour Party under Corbyn a win. Johnson could restore Conservative Party as a campaigning machine and a governing force, even with his bumbling style, yet it could all go wrong. ...

Gas at pump costs about $8 in Germany and France, $7 in UK and $4.50 in Canada- in the US $4 for March 2026. As far back as 2011-2014 gasoline prices averaged about $3.50 a gallon in the US. Today's $3.92 average in 2026 is only 12% higher than $3.50 of 10-15 years back in the US for gas prices at the pump. Gas pries before the war in Ukraine in 2017 were $5.67 a gallon ($1.50 a litre) with a price increase in 2026 10 years later to $8 an increase of 41%. By any comparison with European nations Americans are way better off in 2026 and also in comparison with 15 years back considering the 12% increase and the much higher wages today. The average annual wage salary was $43,000 back in 2010 compared to $65,000- $75,000 today. Much of this was achieved by increased shale production to make US oil self sufficient. Americans are clearly so much better off today with oil at an average price of $3.92 a gallon.  The higher price of oil also acts to increase incentives for accelerating renewable energy production which will make it possible to achieve a future free of fossil fuels while at the same time giving average wage Americans a chance for a better life during the transition. ...

Brazilians turn to pawn shops lending by government owned bank Caixa, in a regulated portion of the lending industry, as credit card rates increase. Brazil experienced a huge surge in credit card debt in the years when consumer loans were freely made in the last decade. Between 2004 and 2014, consumer credit in Brazil increased 658% to $297 bilion, according to the National Association of Executives in Finance, Administration and Accounting. Central bank figures show 6.7% of personal bank loans and 26.3% of credit card accounts being in default. As in Turkey much of the country's growth was fueled by increased spending and consumer credit. The credit binge and the lower revenues from a decline in commodity prices is leading to slow growth and a stagnant economy.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) says in a new report that the cost of renewable energy production in India in 2020 is the lowest of 8 countries, including China, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, U.S. It also points out that India has lowered the cost of solar energy faster than any other country since 2017- by 80% for the period 2010-2018. Solar energy for India in 2018 cost 27% lower than in 2017. Major achievements have been made in solar energy and are continuing with bold targets. In 2020 solar makes up 36% of total energy capacity, with production at 136 gigawatts. In India the conditions with high degree of sunlight in most parts of the country, and the technology cost reductions, lower cost of land and labor, help bring down the cost of solar energy every year. The bold targets and action taken are symbolic of the new efforts in India. The early efforts in India are described as overcoming the hurdle of preconceived notions that electricity shortages had to be accepted as a way of life. In Gujarat the first efforts over 15 years ago were taken by rejecting the idea that electricity could not be made widely and freely available. To do this policy had to be set by starting with first a clean slate and then with a clean heart say pioneers in India's early gains. A clean heart because of how desperately people needed electricity. And a clean slate because how desperately people needed to start from scratch with a new structure and new way of doing things set in place. As Vivekananda put it over 100 years ago "This I have seen in life. One who is overcautious about himself falls into dangers at every step. he who is afraid of losing honor and respect gets only disgrace. He who is always afraid of loss always loses." By taking bold action, making small experiments then setting bold targets and setting structures in place to execute manned with resources, India has achieved 4G in all parts of the country, and is doing the same for renewable energy to make electricity widely available in all parts of the country. ...

Disunion follows the civil war as it unfolded. This piece is on President James Buchanan's ineffectiveness in the face of southern secessionists. He was known asthe "Old Public Functionary," and sought another compromise to settle the issue of slavery and secession. The issues between free-states and slave-states was settled several times after independence through compromise, most notably when Missouri joined the union, known as the Missouri Compromise of 1820-21. Another compromise followed in 1850 over the spread of slavery to territories conquered from Mexico. Buchanan's efforts were directed at reaching keeping the Democratic party's southern and northern wings together, and keeping the peace with the southern secession prone states. In the end he was despised by most of the country, and not seen as being in control by the northern Republicans. He allowed the handing of deep south federal forts to southern states.
