Mikhailo Drapatiy, 43 years, is a major general inthe Ukrainian army known for his action in defence of Mariupol, and is a younger soldier inthe Ukrainian army who is being pushed up the ranks to become the new commander in chief of the Ukrainian armed forces. He is in favor of direct approach in chain of command without much of the soviet style bureaucratic forms and delay. He is also working to modernize the Ukrainian army at all levels so that it can counter Russia's advantage in numbers on the battlefields by conserving Ukrainian human resources and fighting using technology and intelligent  warfare. This could change the course of the war and lead Russia to take steps to negotiate a settlement.

The Guardian points out that Macron is making a political choice rather than an economic imperative with making workers work longer for pensions during a cost of living crisis. France's pension advisory council says that the annual 10 billion to 12 billion euro deficit for pensions was manageable in the context of total expenditure of 340 billion euros. It also predicted agradual return to breaking even by the mid 2030's. As much as 80% of people under 65 oppose the reform says the Guardian. Macron has a minority government and won with support from working class parties led by  Melenchon, and is in his second term, so it is not clear anymore why he has pursued this course of action.

What an amazing recovery Rishabh Pant has made after his Mercedes SUV crashed on the Delhi-Roorkee expressway, hitting a divider and went into flames. It was in January 2023 that surgery was done on Pant. After rehab work at the National Cricket Academy, water aerobic work and training, he is back to play Test cricket as wicketkeeper for the Indian side at Headingley and now at Edgbaston. He scored a century at Headingley.

Here he talks about his near death experience and his first question will he be able to play again, his mother's was will he be able to walk again. Dr Pardiwala, his orthopedic surgeon, was uncertain if Pant could ever play again. It shows miracles happen.

Workers at Pemex are about half as efficient as workers at the Brazilian oil company Petrobras, and have one fourth the efficiency of workers at BP, according to a study by the baker Institute in Texas. Union leaders run the union in a manner reminiscent of feudal times with favors and patronage for workers and politicians. Once in power union leaders have run the union for decades, including shooting of rivals. Hernandez Galicia, a son of an oil worker, built up a system of patronage in the sixties and remained in power till he was arrested in 1989 on weapons charges by the government of president Salinas Gortari. The union formed part of the PRI party power base as the 200,000 union workers were expected to vote for the government. In the 1988 election union votes did not go to the PRI candidate and Salinas barely won with 50.7% of the vote. After Hernandez the system of patronage and corruption has continued. At the top of Mexico's agenda for president Nieto is changing Pemex, improving efficiency for reversing decline in oil production, and working with foreign oil companies. ...

Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma decided to remain calm and not keep changing the fielding. They decided to let Jadeja, Ashwin and Axar know that this was the best way to approach it. Australia lost wickets quickly after the Dravid Sharma huddle and decision to tackle the situation calmly, just when the Australian batsmen appeared to be settling in for a long run haul. Australia were all out for 113 from 62 for 1 wicket.

India's Northeast has been completely transformed in the 8 years since 2014 with PM Modi's infrastructure improvements. Tele density is up from a little over 40% to 65%, and massive road, rail and air infrastructure building have created a new Northeastern India. This can be seen in the way Northeasterners are looking at the future with a new optimism and integrating into India's experiment with development under democracy with enthusiasm never seen this way before.
