How ethanol plants create opportunities for the local economy but also problems as production of ethanol requires scarce water resources in states like nebrask the No. 3 state after Iowa and Illinois in corn production. A 50 million gallon ethanol plant could use up 150 million gallons of water to make fuel, thats 3 gallons of water for 1 gallon of ethanol fuel. In the Lower Republican river Natural Resources District of Nebraska farmers which is a dry drought prone area dependent on underground water formations for irrigation, farmers pumped out 62.6 billion gallons of water from underground. Now that a court ruled that Kansas should get its fair share of water from the Republican River which is sees its levels affected by the underground pumping near the river, this water district is having to put irrigation meters that are checked after each harvest to limit use to 11 inches on average over 5 years. This article shows how scarce resources like water can be used up in the production of ethanol, and how that can complicate life for farmers even though the extra income from ethanol plants can boost incomes in depressed farm communities....

Treasury Secretary Yellen says on her second trip to China that she will make this the top issue in discussions, the danger that Chinese overproduction in green energy products will lead to the kind of overspill that happened for steel and aluminium where subsidized products drove American companies out of the market. Speaking at a solar energy factory in Norcross, Georgia, that was itself closed in 2017 and is back up again with the assistance in the Inflation Reduction Act for promoting American green energy manufacturing, Yellen said: "It is important to me and the president that American firms and workers can compete on a level playing field." Yellen's remarks on supply chain resilience- "China's overcapacity distorts global prices and production patterns and hurts American firms and workers, as well as firms and workers around the world. Challenges for individual firms can lead to concentrated supply chains, negatively impacting global economic resilience.”   ...

Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of England, in meetings with bankers and business leaders says Britain should remain in the single market 2 years after exit from the European Union, according to the Sunday Times. Theresa May plans for Britain to exit the EU in 2019. The reason is that this would protect business as it adjusts to leaving the single market, a kind of transition or Brexit buffer period. This period "really informs what businesses need to do because you transition and restructure during that window," Carney told a House of Commons Treasury Committee. About the changes in the politics in the U.S. and Europe Carney has said about basic fairness in bankers language- "market fundamentalism can devour the social capital needed for capitalism" to work, referring to the moral failures in operations of the banks by 2009 and how it hit the middle and working class incomes and wealth.

Lee, Nicholas and Harris of the WSJ describe the responses being considered by president Obama to Russia's hacking of DNC, and other cyberattacks during the U.S. presidential election. Obama said the goal will be "to send a clear message to Russia or others not to do this to us because we can do stuff to you." He said some of this would be done publicly and other things would be done where the Russians know but not everybody else. Mr. McFaul, a former ambassador to Russia, is cited here saying that declassification of intelligence by president Obama in the remaining weeks in office is needed so that all ambiguity about Russian involvement is removed. Elections are coming up in Germany and France in 2017 and both president Obama and the Republican Congress leadership see the need to prevent any further cyberattacks on the U.S. or Western Europe.

More than 6.7 million persons are displaced inside Ukraine most of them from the war torn eastern part of Ukraine, and most of them women and children. In addition over 3 million are refugees in neighboring countries such as Slovakia and Poland. 

The war is now extending to the Donetsk region with about half of the population of the population in eastern Ukraine having left that region for safety in central and western Ukraine. The rolling farmland and old coal mines of the region, the destroyed infrastructure and industrial facilities, make the area of no use to Russian forces. A fraction of the Russian population in the area has also left says this report in the NYT. 

The scale of the damage and the refugee situation is hard to imagine and can be seen in the pictures in this NYT report. Boarding trains and buses civilians have poured out of cities in eastern Ukraine where the war has intensified.

Conditions such as these are simply unacceptable for average young American families and their children when they rent apartments. A business called syndicated apartments which pools together small investors with promises of high returns in apartment real estate is the focus of this report by the WSJ. As the mayor of Houston has pointed out it has created deplorable conditions for renters in his city, with similar conditions in other cities. In pursuit of profit apartment quality deteriorates creating difficulties for ordinary Americans who rent. This report shows the collapse of this as a business activity with losses for investors with the Fed's increase in interest rates. Another article in the NYT this week shows what a city friendly to renters can look like- Vienna, Austria, which is next on this page. With the increase in mortgage rates doubling home ownership payments more average Americans will look to rent. Conditions such as these are a gross violation of what America's implicit promise is to its people for quality of life. ...

Charlie Munger, vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, America's largest conglomerate with a trillion dollars in assets, says Crypto currency should be banned outright. He calls it not a commodity, not a currency, not a security, but a gambling contract with 100% edge on the house. It exists in the US he says only because of a gap in regulation. Munger says China has banned it, so has India with RBI calling for it to be banned. India's central bank RBI governor Shaktikant Das has called i "nothing but gambling" and their perceived value is "nothing but make-believe." He also has called for an outright ban on cryptocurrency saying that modern currency can only be issued by the central bank/government. The question remains why it took so long for Charlie Munger and the leaders in the financial sector in the US  to say this in the WSJ, as it only further damages the interest of ordinary Americans who dabble in these ventures.

Seniors helping seniors is the subject of this report by Clare Ansberry in the WSJ. This is a growing trend. Worker shortages increased in the home care industry during the pandemic. Now older workers such as Diane Richards, 81 years, a registered nurse, are filling some of these positions. Ms. Richards worked as a nurse for 59 years and after her husband's death decided to join Right at Home in Bend, Oregon. Some are retirees like Linda McCallum, 79 years, who are taking positions to supplement Social Security income at $20 per hour. Right at Home depends on her, as it lost half its workers during the pandemic. Over 20 years the broader workforce grew by 13%, yet the workers over 65 years working or seeking work increased by as much as 144% or 6.4 million in the US, according to the Labor Department. WSJ shows pictures of these older workers who are dependable and can relate to mobility issues, care of loved ones, need to take health medications in ways that younger workers cannot. ...

Can Britain take it, more Tory austerity cuts? Mark Landler in the NYT calls it one of the most austere budgets ever imposed on Britain, a country already in recession. Prime minister Sunak and finance minister Jeremy Hunt introduce a budget that will cut government programs saving 30 billion pounds and higher taxes of 25 billion pounds or $29.7 billion. This will mean a drop of 7% in disposable incomes of people in Britain over 2 years. After a series of missteps first under Boris Johnson and then briefly under Liz Truss, the Tory government of Rishi Sunak concentrates on budgetary constraints ignoring the promises made for growth and improving infrastructure, leveling up of regions, that were made by a series of Conservative governments. It lacks broad support as this government was not elected with this mandate. Boris Johnson won the election with traditional Labour support for leveling up, growth and infrastructure. None of this is happening. Also cut are budgets for the defense ministry, foreign aid and aid to cultural institutions in London. ...

Both are fervent about climate change prevention and plan $10 billion in donations to help climate change prevention. This Economic Times report provides details about the  remaining aspects of the Indian Mumbai Ahmedabad bullet train project using Japanese technology. The project is being expedited with the federal and state governments completing land acquisition and covering extra costs of the project. This was one of the projects coming out of meetings and close collaboration .between Modi and Shinzo Abe of Japan. The cost estimated at 1.1 lakh crore is financed for 81% of cost by Japan's JICA through along term loan. Some of the engineering work may be completed by Indian engineering firms to reduce the cost. Delays mean the project cost will increase and some of the cost can be adjusted by doing some of the work through Indian firms under Make in India. JICA or Japan International Cooperation Agency is a government agency that provides aid for development projects and technical cooperation with other countries. It is part of the official development assistance of Japan which was $16.1 billion in 2020, according to OECD. ...

A You.Gov poll taken for The Times in the last 5 days says 9 out of 10 Tory voters have decided who they will vote for as ballot papers went out this week. And 60% will vote for Liz Truss who has widened her lead to 34 points over Rishi Sunak. Tory party voters for the leadership by a majority or 53% say Boris Johnson should not have resigned. Only 41% say Boris Johnson should resign. Mr. Johnson supported Liz Truss, as do most of the cabinet.

When asked who can get Tories a majority in the next election Truss at 39% has a 20 percentage point lead over Sunak. From this it appears that if Tories themselves and not the cabinet had decided Boris Johnson would still be prime minister, and Liz Truss takes on the premiers role with the same style and spirit of Brexit that Johnson brought to the role and would consider Mr. Johnson as part of the close advisers.

Construction spending in manufacturing was $108 billion in 2022. Total manufacturing employment is at about 10% of the private sector. About 800,000 jobs were added in the private sector in the last 2 years. The total number is 13 million, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. About 800,000 additional jobs are ready to be filled. For years after World War II the growth in manufacturing was at 4%. Today the growth will be higher after incentives introduced by president Biden in different sectors from semiconductors to electric vehicles.  In other products from eyeglasses to socks and bicycles there is a shift to adding factories in the US to be able to fill increase in demand and for stores carrying less inventory that can be replenished quickly from home factories. The supply chain problems and logistics cost increases during the pandemic have driven home the need for having supply from within the US or very close to the US in Mexico or Canada, or friendshoring in India or Vietnam. ...

India has strong cultural and Buddhist connections to South Korea. BRICS is becoming an obsolete concept as Brazil, India and South Africa are essentially looking for ways in which they can increase opportunities for growth. It was a concept started by a Goldman Sachs investment banker Mr. O'Neill at a different time in 2010. The world has gone through the 2009 financial crisis, the pandemic, and the supply chain crisis with overconcentration of EU and US supply chain in China. These events are leading to a shift under the Biden administration to bring India  into the G7 into a new G8 that includes India. Only Russia, China and South Africa remain from the original BRICS. Russia because of the war in Ukraine now depends on Chinese support and trade. Brazil will gradually shift back to its position as part of the US alliance in Latin America with Mexico, Argentina and Chile. India with its plans for rapid growth to build the modern third largest economy by 2040 seeks supply chain integration with the US and EU in the position that China holds today.   ...

Biden's love of Irish poetry comes through at critical moments in his career. His efforts reading his uncle Ed Finnegan's book of W. B. Yeats poetry and trying to memorize some lines as a child to  help overcome his stutter. His quoting of Seamus Haney at critical times in his career- and after winning the 2020 election. He also quoted Haney in the Irish parliament this week using Haney's translation of the Greek playwright Sophocles- Haney's The Cure at Troy. In a way says NPR Biden found his own voice through Yeats. One can see from the speech at the Irish parliament that the words of a Yeats or a Haney has a magical effect on him- helps him come alive and become invested with a youthful energy, and a new found vigor that comes from purposeful living. He combines Haney on hope with his reference to Chinese president Xi and being asked what defines America- his answer "Possibilities."

Gary Starkweather, son of a dairy farmer in Lansing, Michigan, invented the laser printer in 1977 with the Xerox 9700.  He did this while working for Xerox Corporation, with his idea that optical technology could be used to provide pulses of laser striking a photosensitive drum, with toner attaching to the spots touched by light, the toner then fusing to the paper. His initial idea was rejected by his bosses at Xerox so he got a transfer to the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center where he worked on developing the first laser printer and then better laser printers. Interesting and useful are his thoughts on productivity and use of technology. His views were that it was not a good thing having people pressured working from the 40 hour week to the sixty hour week. He also disapproved of the pressure for people to stay digitally connected all the time. For him the concern about the future of information technology was- can I still be human in the process. ...

This Times leading article on UK government's coronavirus policy says it is inconsistent, and a muddled effort just as the third wave is accelerating. It asks the public to be cautious when going outside and still opens nightclubs with covid passports not required till the end of September. By August cases could reach 100,000 say experts so that the nightclub and bars reopening can only fuel the rise in cases. The British government must be aware that the Netherlands opened nightclubs and bars in June and this led to a sudden jump in cases with 40% of new cases coming from nightclubs.  The policy is undermining public confidence. It is doing this at the same time as it is asking people to self isolate for 10 days. The policy also does not require covid vaccination pass for all events and for shops and restaurants as is being done in France and in other countries on a regional basis as in Germany.

With provincial support and a thick network of family support it is much easier to get childcare so that women can work and there are other benefits. Apple relies on Chinese suppliers for about 90% of its products. So reliant is Apple on China that it is slow to make changes to adapt to president Biden's policies for a new US Asian Economic Framework that builds new supply chains. By contrast Samsung has largely stayed out of China using supply chain manufacturing in Vietnam and other countries. India and Vietnam are major alternatives and only India can offer the well trained workforce and supplies of land, labour, incentives and facilities that China offers. This makes Apple a laggard in the changes that are happening today to supply chains bringing manufacturing closer to home and making products in countries allied to the US in Asia. This includes South Korea, Japan, India and Vietnam as production hubs for parts and assembly of advanced technology products. Abdulrazak Gurnah who left Zanzibar for England in the 1960's was given the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2021 for his "compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee caught between cultures and continents." In his acceptance speech Gurnah says in his writings he engaged in a refusal to accept the attitudes, the stereotypes and disdain towards people of British colonies that he met daily. He says that after a prolonged period of poverty and alienation in England it became clear to him that there was something he needed to say. Gurnah says he came to the "deeply unsettling realization that a new simpler history was being constructed, transforming, even obliterating what had happened." This NHK documentary looks at the idea of "Cheap Japan" as wages and prices have stagnated for over three decades. Where the US has grown by 58% for wages over that period Japan has declined by 12%. Japanese companies wages offered even in Thailand and Malaysia, and for low wage products in factories of Vietnam and Bangladesh are cheap and uncompetitive. A Japanese apparel brand is shown looking for factories in Bangladesh that can make shirts at $1.65 to be sold in Japan at $6. Japan's wages and prices are now falling behind developing countries and a Japanese economist calls it "declining Japan." Foreign investment is key to reviving growth by attracting new talent, changing business thinking and style of managing that is more open to new ideas and expansion. It may be of interest to note that Chinese companies in Japan may be focused on electronics and advanced technologies than American private equity in Japan focused on hotels and health care simply to boost profits. ...

He studied music and humanities in Bosseto, and moved back to his farm in Sant'Agata to write some of his famous operas. NYT's Tommasini travels to Verdi's Italian homeland to trace Verdi's roots in the Italian countryside. For most of his life Verdi lived there even as his classical music operas were performed all over European cities. Many of these operas showed the same longing for home as in "Nabucco." On government documents Verdi showed his occupation as "agricultore" or farmer. After ridiculous objections by censors or inept impresarios Verdi would say he was ready to dig up the fields and return to farming in the countryside near Parma.

Strong hiring and consumer spending is propelling the US economy forward in 2024. With 4th quarter growth at 3.3% the year 2023 ended with the US economy growth at 3.1% for the year. Contrast that with economists projecting 0.2% growth in 2023 in 2022. In 2022 the growth was 0.7%. Much of this growth can be attributed to the Biden administration going all out to support American industry and bringing jobs and factories home, supporting wage increases which in turn supported consumer spending into 2023 and now into 2024. The public feeling the effects of price increases has not grasped the full significance of this growth trend of this decade with the complete focus on the economy, manufacturing, and the strength in advanced technologies of president Biden and a group of bipartisan members of the US Congress from both parties. As inflation slows with the public resisting unfair price increases and the Powell Fed controlling parameters of inflation, the economic effects of this growth are being felt across all sectors and among the wider public.  ...
