Higher per capita wheat consumption in Middle East countries means that the impact of rising wheat prices hits these countries harder. Wheat futures have gone up by 91% in less than one year. Tunisians for example eat 478 pounds per person a year compared to 177 pounds in the U.S., according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization. Governments in the Middle East buy wheat at world prices and subsidize it heavily to meet the needs of their people. Wheat at these prices cost Egypt $361 per metric ton in February, which was up significantly from $172 in July 2010. This adds $1.7 billion to Egypt's import bill in 12 months.

Experts say China's official GDP figures are unreliable and cannot be verified. Transparency is sorely lacking. The methodology, inflation assumptions and other basis for the calculations are not presented, so that many of the numbers cannot be reproduced. The official figure for 1st quarter GDP growth is 7%, from China's Bureau of National Statistics. GDP growth estimates developed by Capital Economics show 4.9% growth, by Citi 4.6%, by the China Center of the Conference Board 4%. Since 2012 the Capital Economics estimates are just above 5%, and the Conference Board estimates about 4%, showing that the growth rate has slowed markedly since 2012. As Communist party chief of Liaoning province, the current prime minister showed serious doubts about the GDP numbers and preferred to rely on figures for rail cargo, electricity consumption, bank loans.

After the disaster of the Japanese Fukushima nuclear plant in 2011 following a tsunami and earthquake chancellor Merkel made the decision to close nuclear plants. Germany will close 3 nuclear plants in December 2021. Decommissioning will take 20 years and 1.1 billion euros per plant. In 2022 Germany will have only 3 nuclear plants in Bavaria, Baden-Wurttemberg, and Lower Saxony, equivalent to power of 4 gigawatts from 1000 wind turbines. Gas prices are up 10 fold in 2021 as Germany makes the shift to wind and solar. Economy and Climate Protection Minister Habeck of the Greens party in the new German government sees a continuation of the policy removing nuclear plants and shifting to wind and solar.

Thomas Sargent of New York University and Christopher Sims win the Nobel Prize in Economics for 2011. Sargent, a professor at New York University, is best known for his work on "rational expectations theory, " which points out that people base their actions on their expectations about the impact of government policies in the future. The implications for today are that monetary policy by lowering rates cannnot permanently lower unemployment, as people will expect higher future inflation and insist on higher wages for labor and higher interest rates for capital. Sargent did most of the signifcant work on the theory of rational expectations at the University of Minnesota from 1971 to 1987. Sims work is in statistical relationships and use of vector autoregressions to study the economy. He taught at the University of Minnesota from 1974 to 1990.

Marco Rubio has shown an exceptional grasp of Latin America from his days representing Florida in the Senate, about a decade in the Senate when he has closely followed events and acquired a deep knowledge of Latin America. His answers at Congressional hearing were exceptionally good, and showed an ability and earnest desire to get good results for the Venezuelan people, sharing aninterest in the good for Latin America being a person of latin American origin who speaks fluent Spanish as a native language. Points made by Venezuela in answering questions from senators in the US Senate hearings- All of Latin America welcomed the US action to remove Maduro from Venezuela.  It affects Colombia and neighboring countries. Colombian rebel groups control parts of Venezuelan territory and operate from there.  Multiple administrations had deals with Maduro. Maduro kept none of the deals including the one with Biden for free and fair elections.  To be realistic in situations such as Spain, Paraguay, there were transitions before safe and fair return to normalcy and democratic government returned after decades of dictatorship. RUbio showed an exceptional grasp of the Latin Ameican situation and reminded senator Murphy that he had been in the Senate for decade and worked with the senators now on the other side to remove Maduro amd nothing had worked. Venezuela is a rich country , the most affluent in Latin America. It does not need money from the US. Before the Chavez dictatorship it was a country with democratic forms of government, and a country friendly to the US.  The action taken was a quarantine not a blockade. By controlling oil going out of Venezuela the lifeline for the country the US has control over its finances and the economy, budgets, the government finances. The immediate task was getting the oil out of the country as there was no place to put it and US had it sold at market prices not sent to China at a 20% discount for which Venezuela got nothing except paying off debt to China. The current authorites are cooperating with the US on the budget, they have to submit budget requests and the US approves it item by item and an audit agency is being set up including Ex-Im. Bank an other options to make sure the money is being spent on salaries and for the Venezuelan people. The money goes to an account for Venezuela at the US Treasury Department. In 4 weeks a lot has been accomplished. What happens in 6 months - for that actions are more important than words, it should be a marked improvement over today. Including setting up the US diplomatic presence in Caracas which means talking to the government on the ground, talking to civil society, talking to the Opposition.  ...

A reminder from a veteran of investing about the enthusiasm and euphoria of Mr. Market, the term Benjamin Graham, author of the Intelligent Investor, used to describe the collective emotions of the people in the market during times of overoptimism when prices of shares have overextended and are overpriced. Graham warned of Mr Market in 1945, 1959, and in 1971, each time the market swooned and faltered. Zweig of the WSJ, points out data from Robert Shiller of Yale, the price/earnings ratio of the S&P 500 index jumping from 13.1 to 15.5 since March 2009, in 3 months. Ofcourse, this required aspecial disposition. Being well read and immersed in literature, mathematics and philosophy, helps to view things "from the standpoint of eternity, rather than day to day." And having a sense of detachment, a "certain aloofness," and "unruffled serenity." Graham mentions his internal equipment, his "embracing stoicism as a gospel sent to him from heaven." So Zweig again reminds investors on behalf of Graham as it were, and cautions about the mood swings ocurring lately from despair to a sudden optimism, which he describes as an insecure and desperate need to believe that things have taken a new turn when on closer examination things have only been papered over. Actually when one looks closely the credit tightening has eased by resolute action from the Fed and the Treasury and the Obama administration. But the underlying problem behind toxic mortgage securities remains at large. Private equity is being relied on to fix this problem in agovernment private partnership but no sigificant dent has been made in the toxic securities. Banks have made profits for one quarter, the outlook has improved and bank stock prices got a boost, but underlying problems remain. The loss in GDP this first quarter of 2009 compared to the prior year is 6% which is much better than the the 15-16 % drop in Germany and Japan, and 21% in Mexico. And the steep drops in unemployment are moderating. But large numbers of foreclosures continue with no dent in this in sight. And stimulus expenditures are only slowly trickling through, see the link to this. And the situation can only be described as improving but fragile....

Shehbaz Sharif 70,  is the younger brother of a three term prime minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif. He ran Punjab province, the country's largest state when his brother was prime minister. In this way he brings substantial experience to the problems of the economy that now face many developing economies such as Pakistan.  First on the agenda is to normalize relations with the US, rebuild ties with India, and restart negotiations with the International Monetary Fund. Pakistan faces severe inflation of 14% and devaluing currency that makes imports costlier as the foreign currency reserves have dropped to alarming levels of $24 billion when annual import needs are at about $56 billion. This has a direct impact on cost of living, standards of living and on industry. Shehbaz Sharif understands the situation and has said restoring the economy "will take effort, effort and more effort." A similar statement has been made by Mr. Modi in Hindi "sab ka viokas, sab ka prayas" which also mean effort, effort and more effort, which all of South Asia and Bay of Bengal, and South East Asian countries needs considering the impact of Covid pandemic, and now inflation from the war in Europe hitting food supplies. The situation is grim in other parts of South Asia- in Myanmar, in Sri Lanka, in Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia. The popular sentiment is also shifting as seen in the Indian part of the old British Punjab province. Mostly Sikh this part of old Punjab state in India made a complete change bringing in a new party Aadmi to improve the economy and provide good governance. In this situation all governments are expected to deliver on good governance and the economy.   ...

At the core 66% of people in the US, UK and in Germany, 77% in France, Italy and Spain  in Pew Research in 2024 see the need for big economic changes. Inequality increase are often automatically seen as correlated with deterioration in standard of living. However in practice cost of living concerns and opportunity to do something about it can move in the opposite direction to inequality increases. Cost of living can improve based on gas and electricity prices and access to housing with lower interest rates independent of whether government is or is not intervening in the economy. Some interventions may not work as in the supply side shocks in prices from Covid lockdowns or simply exhaust people's patience without sufficient timely correction. A disquiet index can also move in a different direction from inequality increases when cost of living raises disquiet levels for people, and cultural issues such as transgender in schools create  additional disquiet. Failure to get bipartisanship may leave inequality issues unresolved as happens with one group student loan borrowers stuck in repayment.  In this sense inequality is only one goal and can be elusive if the overall goal of reducing disquiet index are left unresolved. A better quality of life can be achieved in other ways- as with the effort for "a rising tide lifts all boats." This can include the ripple effect of international politics where issues spill over into the US creating cultural disquiet on campuses as happened in 2024 with Israel Gaza conflict. The interplay of local and international starts adding complexity that adds to disquiet index for people in all levels of society.   ...

Are lower sticker prices for 2007 compared to 2006 an effort to bring manufacturers suggested prices more in line with the actual price or value pricing, or do they suggest a better deal for buyers in comparison to 2006? It is not clear across all models without doing the arithmetic for each, however cars come with more features than before and it appears that competition and falling sales for the big three make it necessary to attract customers with better buys. But with higher discounts on the models designed to clear inventory, 2006 models can be sold for less than 2007.

An official report after a 7 year survey finds 19.4% of arable land in China is polluted. The pollution comes for the most part from inorganic materials such as heavy metals cadmium, nickel which are byproducts of mining. Pollution is severe in the Pearl River Delta in the south, in Yangtze River Delta in the east, and in older industrial zones in the north east. Earlier efforts to get this data were stymied by some officials calling it a state secret about the time of the discovery of cadmium contaminated rice in Hunan province. China's 334 million acres of arable land, according to the most recent land survey at the end of 2012, is only 37 million acres above the minimum considered necessary to feed the large population, making this a major issue for China.

China imports about a quarter of its coal imports from Australia. Yet this has impacted China because of a rebound in the economy and a very cold winter in 2020. This means there is a shortage of electricity in some parts of China.

China imports 80% of its iron ore, with 60% coming from Australia and prices of iron ore have almost doubled in the past year. Last year China imported over 1 billion tons of iron ore.

The buying price for GM of $27.50 is about 8% higher than GM's closing price on Dec. 18, 2012. Treasury plans to sell the remaining 300.1 million shares within in the next 12-15 months depending on market conditions. Treasury's breakeven point is about $53 a share, and the government will lose money on the bailout compared to the AIG rescue. The key in the auto bailout was preserving over 1 million jobs in the U.S. auto industry during an economc crisis.

The settlement price of wheat per bushel (60 pounds) is $6.13  August 18 at Chicago Board of Trade compared to $7.58 at the start of 2022 before the Ukraine war started. Russia's bumper crop and its ability to continue exporting is one reason. Higher commodity prices also mean producers plant more. This is good news for the cost of living not just in poor countries but also in the US and Europe. Peter Coy looks at the dynamics of wheat pricing and production.

Krugman says the the higher population growth in Texas has led to higher job growth there relative to the rest of the country. Other factors mitigating the effects of the recession in Texas- the housing and mortgage lending laws in Texas prevented the building up of home equity debt and foreclosures that hit other states, and the oil industry in Texas helped with higher oil prices. Lower wages in Texas, lower living costs, and lower housing costs have attracted jobs to the state. In June 2011, the Texas unemployment rate was 8.2%, lower than California and close to that of New York.

To get a clearer picture of the potential and problems with alternative fuels one has to cut through the political lobbying aspects to get an idea of what is doable without environmental consequences. There are many issues connected to the new mandate Congress is writing up for use of 9 billion gallons of fuel made from biomass in 10 years by 2017 and 21 billion gallons by 2022. Since it takes about 700,000 tons of biomass to produce 50 million gallons according to one energy analyst it would require the movement of 126 million tons of biomass from biomass growing areas to biomass plants that convert it into fuel in 2017. This would mean burning energy for transport and would require development of the logistics. The technology isn't here yet but scientists know that biomass can be converted into fuels resembling gasoline or diesel based on the molecular chemistry. Environmentalists and national security groups have joined together to push for this sweeping mandate that the Energy department estimates can replace a third or more of the country's gasoline needs by 2017 or 2022 as the fuel efficiency fuel savings also kick in by that time. The idea is to growthe types ofplant material and straw, switchgrass, that would require very little water and fertilizer to grow. Its the challenge scientists have to take on. And to use tree trimmings, corn stubble and certain kinds of garbage thats a biomass for conversion into fuel. Today about 7 billion gallons of ethanol are made in the USA after Congress passed a law in 2005. Its used mainly as an additive and replaces about 4% of the gasoline used in the USA. Congress new mandate on ethanol calls for an additional 8 billion gallons of ethanol from corn by 2015, in 8 years. Right now corn prices are soaring and corn used as feed for livestock is becoming costlier for meat producers causing them to complain and because it takes about 20 million acres of corn to produce these are acres that cant produce vegetable or fruit or other grain and food producers and processors are complaining that this raises the prices they pay for the inputs they use. So there is a lot of lobbying going on back and forth and some of the statements reflect this. The petroleum industry also does'nt like the idea of nonpetroleum based products and hasnt been too enthusiastic about this mandate and hasnt really made the conversion to their refining and distribution networks for widespread use of these alternative fuels. But Congress is determined and public opinion polls reflect the concerns of a public that is upset about nothing being done about the nationa's dependency on foreign oil. For this see the recent Business Week link. All this is going on while the price of ethanol has slumped and corn price inpouts for ehtanol production are soaring making ethanol less profitable, and see the recent link to the WSJ for this. Congress is responding to grassroots public opinion that wants something done and just as the auto industry learned by its failed lobbying on fuel efficiency the petroleum and other industries are just going to have to live with it it seems. ...

Bringing together all ministries and parts of government into an integrated planning and execution sought under the Indian prime minister's Gati Shakti Master plan for infrastructure is likely to bring a change in the culture of ministries and government at every level in India. Before for the years since independence in 1947 no attention was given to this idea of one team of many teams all working under one master plan at every level of government, much of the activity was conducted for development in separate silos. This massive culture change will accelerate development and ensure every rupee or dollar is spent to get the most out of infrastructure building efforts that benefit the public in India.
