The Economist's index on the value of the USA currency shows the euro is overvalued by 22% relative to the $US, and most currency analysts think that the euro is overvalued by 20-30% relative to the dollar. As the economy in the EU and in Britain in particular is doing poorly and may contract in the second quarter and at some point the European central bank may lower interest rates especially if crude oil prices continue to drop and inflation is under control. The Fed increasing rates and the ECB decreasing rates would help the dollar rebound.

Britain's economy and standard of living has suffered from the long drawn out austerity years under the Tories followed by the Brexit issue raised by the Tories. Nigel Farage was brought out of retirement by the lack of effective leadership of Labour under Starmer even after winning a majority in parliament for Labour. Andy Burnham is trying to put Britain's house in order coming in as the man from the North, Mayor of the Manchester region. He has served in positions including at Treasury under Blair and Brown. Compared to every prome minister of the last three decades he brings both the experience and the knowledge of how to implement efforts to improve public services from experiments done in the Manchester region that he can use for the whole of Britain in transportation, infrastructure, delivery of water, electricity, and other essential services in a better way than the privatized companies of the Tories. He pushed back against Reform's revival in the Makerfield by-election. And it is crucial for Britain's economic future that it not waste more years like it did under Cameron and Johnson with a extension under Reform that only delays Britain's economic recovery. ...

The people like Stephen Dixon who day in day out do the work that keep New York functioning and the streets clean. Stephen Dixon. He did the hard work hauling trash on a route that did this manually, and helped clean up the snow also. He joins the sanitation department at the age of 41 but works just like the younger people on the job, and does this for 20 years. He walks with a limp, talks about getting his knees fixed at retirement once he finished 20 years and qualified for a pension. With 4 daughters he needs the steady job with the Sanitation Department. One day on the Queens route he collapses with aheart attack. Mayor Bloomberg calls the family. An immigrant from Panama at the age of 9, Stephen Dixon's story is a different one from the ones that make the headlines these days.

This editorial in the WSJ points to the manner in which Donald Trump has handled Ukraine, Crimea and Russia. By saying that he might accept Russia's takeover of Crimea, and his failure to study the situation, makes it appear that he does not really understand the situation in the Ukraine with the Russian intervention in the eastern part of the country. This makes it look like the Republican nominee has not acted in a way that every candidate from the Republican party since Eisenhower has- to protect America's interests and that of its allies in Europe.  Ironically making the same mistake that president Obama has in not acting when America's interests are challenged, with Hillary Clinton and Democratic leaders who are close allies such as Leon Panetta, promising to take strong action where and as needed, in the tradition of president Harry Truman.
