US economic growth for the fourth quarter 2021 was at the annual rate of 6.9%. Economic growth rate for full year 2021 was 5.5%. This is the fastest growth since 1984 when  growth followed a double dip recession and high inflation. Most of the surge in growth in 4th quarter 2021 was from companies restocking merchandise and shelves and not from people buying more stuff. Without these inventory effects growth in fourth quarter 2021 would be 1.9%, according to the Commerce Department. Sales of durable goods, of cars refrigerators, actually fell in December.

For the current quarter, the first quarter of 2022, forecasts show growth will slow to 2%.

Republicans see their messaging on crime and immigration deflected by recent reports for a freshman Congressman in the area. In 2020 New York issues on crime affected control of Congress for Biden. Since then New York Governor Hochul and others have paid strong attention to this and crime is down in New York and across the country in 2024.

Not only are they included, they play a significant role in the diet. Also included and playing a large role in the diet are lentils and beans which provide a significant source of protein. When the idea of vegetarianism is broadened to a more normal vegetarianism as practiced in countries like India and includes dairy, lentils and beans, the diet is able to provide most of the nutrients needed. By including this kind of vegetarian food as an integral part of the diet and reducing meat is another way the health needs of Americans facing a high rate of obesity and other medical problems can be met. If insurance companies were to give incentives for increased consumption of these vegetarian foods and lowered consumption of meat, and the public was made aware of its benefits through advertising, the cost of health care in the U.S. could be brought down....

The CDU takes 32% of the vote in Saxony down from 39% in 2014, 5 points ahead of the AfD, and he SPD wins in Brandenburg with a 3 point lead over the AfD. The federal government in Berlin is run by a coalition of the CDU and the SPD. The east west divide in Germany clearly shows with the AfD doing well in the former Communist East Germany. People in the east feel that they are "second class citizens" and this plus the migration policy of chancellor Merkel that alienated many including its partner in Bavaria, has given an opening to the AfD that has exploited these divisions. The AfD now has an ultra right wing and both the mainstream parties the CDU of Merkel and the SPD of Willy Brandt campaigned against it. The AfD or Alternative for Germany Party is basically a creation of chancellor Merkel's open migration policy which has affected Europe and may have provided the small margin to the pro-Brexit parties in Britain in the first referendum. The CDU and the SPD now look set to seek new leadership to tackle the problems of infrastructure neglect, the impact of the migration policies in fragmenting politics, increasing inequality, and the policy towards Britain and other states in the EU. ...

An Ottawa native, Andrew Scheer, 38 years old, representing the state of Saskatchewan, is elected leader of the Conservatives in Canada by winning about 51% of the vote from 141,000 party members votes.  He is a former Speaker of the House of Commons. Scheer put less emphasis on social issues such as same sex marraige and abortion, basing his campaign on the idea of being less negative and strident than Mr Harper, the previous leader who lost the 2015 election to the liberals under Trudeau. Scheer opposes carbon taxes, and emphasized putting potential immigrants through testing for "Canadian values."

The Times showed a 21% increase in digital ad revenue in second quarter 2010, with digital accounting for 26% of total ad revenue. But total digital ad revenues for newspapers is only $2.7 billion, and is still too small to make up for the $24 billon loss in print ad revenue from 2000 to 2009. AARP shows 29 million Americans working and taking care of older parents. Many work 40 hours a week and work an additional 20 hours helping elderly parents. About six out of ten people of this 29 million work full time. In 2024 a lot more people are living longer and older people prefer staying in their own homes and need help from family members. A simple fall or a cancer diagnosis can lead to long hospital stay, months of treatment, and worrying for family members. Company benefits in 2024 do not include senior or eldercare support or even accomodating employees caring for their parents. In America today federal and state laws do not protect people caring for elderly parents from discrimination in the workplace. Consider how this is affecting companies, as about one third who are caregivers say they are going to leave, and half of the employees leaving are senior manager and executives with much experience. This comes to about 5 million senior managers and executives that American industry can ill afford to lose as it competes with China, India and Europe. About half of all companies are making this a priority in 2024, according to Care.com. Citigroup added 2 weeks of paid leave to care for immediate family member. Companies allow employees to add older parents on their health insurance. These benefits are being added to maternity and paternity leave. The fact that Congress and state legislatures have failed to enact laws protecting caregivers is one more reason for the discontent and unrest in the US after the pandemic. ...

The shocks to the UK banking system resumed Monday with the announcement on January 19 that RBS faced losses of a huge magnitude, of 28 billion pounds for 2008 with fresh losses in 2009. RBS shares went down 66%, and at closing on on January 21, 2009, were at 12.5 pence. Lloyds Banking Group shares are at 45.1 pence, at 66 pence. Barclays which has avoided taking government money saw its shares drop 25% on January 16. The government is hoping that its plan to provide insurance that would limit bank's losses on bad loans and investments will work, but uncertainty on how the insurance will be priced is raising doubts about the plan's effectiveness to restore confidence. Especially when RBS is collapsing. The government owns 70% of RBS and 43% of Lloyds. The next step would be nationalization of the banks. According to WSJ nationalization would mean that taxpayers have new liabilities of about $3 trillion or $4 trillion, an amount far exceeding the UK's entire annual economic output.

David Card and Alan Krueger with a study on New Jersey and Philadelphia restaurant workers in 1994 and their subsequent studies on minimum wage increases show no negative effects on unemployment of increasing the minimum wage- More discussion on this topic as Minimum wage increases to $22 an hour in 2026 in NY and California. Indrajit Dube of U Massachusetts says it all depends on how far one goes in increasing the minimum wage. At some point maybe $30 a week it could lead to restaurants deciding not to hire more workers. At 45 hours a week for 48 weeks an employe in the fast food industry at $22 an hour would make $47,520, and at $30 would make $64,800. The poverty level is set at $33,000. The problem with these figures is that the cost of housing is so high and automobile costs have risen very fast in the last 5 years. Housing in New York and Los Angeles is very costly compared to states in the midwest, in the south, and other states. Card's and Krueger's, Dube's studies show that retention is higher employees are more motivated leading to higher restaurant and fast food sales, happier customers, that could lead to more employment not less. Some of this is intuitive and one does not need an economist to tell one that. When compared to Britain's economic and social philosopher Adam Smith much of the accepted wisdom of what Smith said is selective taking what one wants and leaving out the rest, as Lahart shows here about minimum wage. As Adam Smith was  a keen observer of the social sentiments of society which he considered very important for British society, and for British civilization to flourish. For this reason he supported higher wages and the betterment of the lower classes, as Britain's example to the world. Card received a Nobel prize in 2021 for his experiments including his paper on minimum wage in New Jersey and Philadelphia. ...

Xi says China and the US can work through their differences including on Taiwan. As tensions increase in Europe with Ukraine and with another election cycle in the US, it is essential that the US, China, India and the EU work though differences on Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific, and plan ahead for a future peace settlement in Ukraine with the support of all nations, especially ones with which the US and EU, have a strong trading and economic relationship. China needs export markets as its construction industry stalls and increases investment in manufacturing. The US continuing strong investment in manufacturing in the US, continuing to trade with China on a level playing field. Both sides have economic interests, and interests of the world to advance peaceful cooperation.
