As refugees spilled out on the roads the regular army did not have the mobility and speed that volunteers organized in small units. Russia uses SCO or Shanghai Cooperation Organization to present it's case on Ukraine saying a coup supported by the US and Europe was the root cause of the crisis, in other words an effort to turn a Russian language country against Russia with it's effort to delink from Russia and join the European Union. US seeing China as the main competitor is trying under a Republican administration to bring Russia back into the European and US fold. The Europeans Germany and France, UK under Macron, Starmer and Merz are pushing back and see it primarily from the Northern European perspective of a Russian threat as they have over centuries of rivalry in Europe since 1600. China sees Germany and German led EU as its main source of western technology, trade and capital needed for a state run capitalism to function effectively. Germany seeks to keep it's China relations on a even keel for its economic interests, so does China. In this situation it can be surmised that it is the Europeans that asked DJT to sanction India for buying Russian oil to cut Russian source of oil resource sales by $119 billion leaving China's $136 billion purchase of oil from Russia aside (knowing China would not cancel sales easily), to buy time till Germany can build up arms supply to Ukraine. India is buying time to make a gradual shift to stand with the US and the improved US-Russia relations under the Republicans can only help India gradually shift to where it always stands- with the English speaking people of the world, the US and Britain, a policy Gandhi firmly supported and which India as an ancient civilization of the Buddha and the Bhagavad Gita finds itself at home with.   ...

The US with 5% of the world's population has 25% of the world's prisoners. The US has 2.3 million peope behind bars according to the International Center for Prison Studies. China with 4 times the population has 1.6 million people in prison. The US has 751 people in prison per every 100,0000. It varies a lot within the states Louisiana at 1138 per 100,000 and Maine at 273 being the lowest, Minnesota at 300 is more like Sweden at 80 per 100,000 people.Interestingly it shot up in 1975, for a long period from 1925 to 1975 it was about 110 per 100,000. Explanations are given such as the war on drugs but only 500,000 are in prison for drug offences, so its only part of the explanation. tougher sentencing, availability of handguns and higher murder rates, and even the election of judges who respond to public opinion favoring tougher sentencing, are all given as answers. Interestingly Canada's crime rates parallel those seen in the US but the imprisonment rate has been stable for the last 40 years according to one expert Mr. Tonry. He says that english speaking countries have higher prison rates than French and other European peoples. Higher prison rates for black people are known to be the case in English speaking countries but no figures are given here. This is part of the problem....

Bryan Graham in The Guardian offers this more subdued reaction compared to Jason Gay in The WSJ on the performance of Mikaela Shiffrin of Colorado, at the Winter Olympics. She had the longest gap between a medal at the Olympics in skiing after problems at the Beijing Olympics not coming down half of the time. Shiffrin is shown with her thoughts about the loss of her father (aspects of PTSD following her fall and injury in Killington, Vermont, in 2024) who helped her train with no stress letting her be who she was. After several attempts she comes down to her favored event the slalom and after so many doubting her performance and skill focuses thoughts on the fact that she had all the skills, the tools, now it was just to focus on the period from start to finish and execute with precision. In the end after moving the goalposts forward with more than asecond to spare in her lead she simply cannot believe her eyes, a complete disbelief. It was about simply trying and focusing after building all the skills, and finally just turning up anyway after all the disappointments and  injuries and this does it all, says it all.  ...

71% of white voters voted compared to 59% for non white voters. Only 54% of Latinos voted in 2020. Youngest voters 18 years to 29 years participation in 2016 was very low just 39%, it increased to 50% in 2020.

Most people may not realize that for the average Chinese Jimmy Carter was the benevolent American. This report overs Carter's effort to bring China into the world economy and world relations during the Jan 1979 visit of Premier Deng Xiaoping.

Carter said in his dairy that day- "It was a pleasure to negotiate with him."

He later wrote in his diary the trip was "one of the delightful experiences of my Presidency… to me, everything went right, and the Chinese leader seemed equally pleased."

This was the start of the American journey with China that has resumed between Joe Biden and Xi Jinping in California after the Covid pandemic and is still being navigated today.

In 1943 a Japanese destroyer sank an American ship under John Kennedy in these Pacific ocean waters. About  80 years later his daughter Caroline Kennedy, ambassador to Australia in the Biden administration, takes a trip to this Pacific region and islands of Samoa and Tonga, with Wendy Sherman. China is seen as planning a base in the Solomon Islands which is on the southern sea route near Australia.
