About 500 million smartphones are expected to be sold in China in 2015, according to IDC. Xiaomi has gained a firm foothold in China among young people and a fan base similiar to the way Apple is seen in the U.S. The next phase of growth is in countries where there is still room to grow with a large number of people without smartphones. Founder Lin Bin is a former Google executive. He has hired another Google employee Hugo Barra to plan the next stage of expansion overseas. He says Xiaomi will continue to focus on areas other than Europe and the U.S. where there are weak telecom carriers. Xiaomi's pricing model is based on selling quality smartphones with many features at lower prices. In the U.S. and Europe where large service providers offer large subsidies to users of smartphones Xiaomi cannot compete because its pricing advantage disappears. This means taking on the market in places such as India, Indonesia and Brazil where there are many people looking for a smartphone at a smaller price. One obstacle is that Xiaomi has few patents, and competitors are likely to mount paten challenges in these markets. In India, the second largest market, Ericsson has mounted a patent challenge leading to a court order suspending sale of Xiaomi phones. Xiaomi's strengths in China lie in savvy use of the internet and media to market its phones, using some of the methods used by Apple. ...

British Labour party leader says any Brexit deal should be put to a referendum. Earlier many Labour party members supported a second referendum with Mr. Corbyn yet to make a clear stand. During the local elections and the elections to European parliament the Labour party had losses to parties that favored canceling Brexit, including the Liberal Democrats. Corbyn said: "Let the people decide the country's future, either in a general election or through a public vote on any Brexit deal agreed by Parliament." He made these remarks ahead of a meeting with the prime minister of Ireland.  A poll conducted by Panelbase shows  a second referendum on Brexit would get 52% for Remain in the EU and 45% for Leave the EU compared to 52% for Leave and 48% voting Remain in the 2016 referendum. Parliament has to vote for a second referendum for it to take place. The Liberal Democrats made large gains in the recent European elections on the mandate to hold a second referendum, including in Mr. Corbyn's North London area.  If Mr. Boris Johnson succeeds Theresa May as prime minister the Conservative Party faces even more hurdles. European Union is even less likely to negotiate a deal with Mr. Johnson. A withdrawal from the EU without a negotiated agreement favored by Mr. Johnson is unlikely to get support in parliament as it has repeatedly blocked such a move. The alternative is fresh elections not favored by Conservative Party as it is losing credibility, or a second referendum. This means working out the details of the US economy, of inflation, GDP growth, cost of living, to maintain confidence of people in America, the confidence of the working people in America. Action on pharmaceuticals bringing production back home is a win as here it is a clear way to get companies to reduce prices. Permitting imports removing backward looking laws restricting pharmaceutical imports would create the competition that was missing. US automobile companies knowing the government has their back can actually cut prices in the first 12 months of 2025, with Toyota and Hyundai-Kia following suit. This would remove another source of inflation. On iphones and computers getting companies to create a new US+1 with India by 2027 would enable 60% of iphones and computers to be made in India and the US by 2027, The new strategy would be to combine the industrial base of India with the US to create plenty of good US jobs as the priority. Piece by piece the puzzle can be put together with attention to details and keeping overall goals in mind to restore US manufacturing and US industrial base, jobs, that will create its own tailwinds for decades of future growth.   ...

He decided to launch a redesign of the messaging site which sends photos and videos to friends as "snaps" that disappear in a few seconds- was once seen as a competitor to Facebook. He called for a redesign unexpectedly after visiting China in 2017.

Spiegel, 28, a designer, tends to push ahead based on instincts.  He ignored the pleas of his executive team for more time to do the redesign. A gut decision was made and a schedule was set that pushed an aggressive timeline, dismissing concerns of team members.

1.1 million EVs were sold in US in 2024, compared to 1.4 million hybrids. Hybrids have made a comeback as sales of electric cars are slowing in US in 2024. Constraints being lack of enough charging stations, price of electric cars still high, driving range limited before recharge. Hybrid car sales are surging helping Toyota after a too cautious entry into EV's. Now the Biden administration is looking at the targets and how to make the transition smoother. Toyota is pushing back on strict environmental rules that expect 67% of cars to be electric by 2032.  The 2021 executive order by president Biden was for 50% target by 2030 and this included hybrids.  The gradual shift would make it less costly for the public to replace the cars and help first time buyers wanting to try it out do this with hybrids as an option. As a quick guide 12000 pounds of carbon dioxide for global warming are given out by gasoline only cars, half or 6000 pounds by hybrids like Toyota's, and half again 3000 pounds of carbon dioxide by all electric like BYD China's or Tesla/GM/VW. The actual numbers are confirmed by Dept of Energy 2022, and MIT 2019 studies- 2727 pounds all electric, 6898 pounds hybrid, and 12594 pounds all gasoline. ...

WSJ's reporters Meichtry, L, Pokharel, and Soon look at the extraordinary rise of Gautam Adani through his efforts to develop reclaimed land at Mundra port in the state of Gujarat. Adani who started with a small family owned plastics maker in Ahmedabad developed Mundra port around 2001 with the help of the Modi administration. Modi saw the electricity shortages in Gujarat as an opportunity to tackle India's chronic electricity shortages. Adani's early development of a deep water port at Mundra offered both Modi and Adani the opportunity to tackle the electricity shortages by bringing coal in large ships to Mundra in the way that China was already doing by 2005 in its own efforts at industrialization. So deeply immersed was India under the Congress Raj of licenses and closed economy that India's established business failed to see what China was doing to break into the ranks of industrialized nations. India's first prime minister Nehru had build a command economy where not much happened without government licenses and approval often riddled unwittingly with corruption. Modi needed someone outside the established companies operating under the Congress Raj command economy and with a vision of an India with abundant electricity to take the risks Chinese companies were taking to build an entirely new economy. By 2005 Guangzhou was importing coal with large ships from Indonesia and Australia. State owned companies moved slowly and would take years to develop the port capacity. Using China's example Modi pushed ahead with Adani on a rapid time delivery making Mundra a Special economic Zone and helping to connect Indian Railways to the port of Mundra for coal deliveries. Adani Enterprises built the thermal power plants near Mundra and build electricity transmission lines on a rapid mission mode giving Gujarat abundant electricity supplies and giving Gujarat state in northwestern India a great leap forward in the way China was already doing right in front of everyone's eyes by 2005 with world class ports built at Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzen, Hong Kong and logistics connections set with the help of Maersk.  Maersk is now doing the same for modern logistics in India in collaboration with the Modi administration.  Modi and the younger generation of aspirational youth in India see a New India that can break into the ranks of the largest industrialized nations with world class infrastructure in the way China has done, and use new technologies with innovation that will speed up the process in a way that the world has never seen. A quick look at Mundra Port in Wikipedia shows the timeline, It starts in 1998 when Adani Port Ltd was setup and Mundra port work began, 2002 the port integrated with Indian Railways, 2003 when it was made a Special Economic Zone by the Modi government in Gujarat, 2007 when IPO of 40 million shares at price band of around Rs 400 was done.  The Biden administration and the Trump administration support India's efforts to build a new modern economy with a rapid shift to renewable energy. As India is building the ports and logistics with the help of Maersk and other companies in the European Union, president Biden is working with prime minister Modi to build a new supply chain that removes the overconcentration of manufacturing and supply chain logistics in China. This means new ports with the latest technologies in India to handle shipment to the US and the EU. Jake Sullivan set out the goals for president Biden to accomplish this task in meetings with his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval this week on iCERT. President Biden and Republicans, Germany and the EU, see India as a critical part of the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies, and the new supply chain. For the Adani Group the IPO pause offers an opportunity to do what Nirmala Sitharman has done in the Indian Budget this week- build a stable growth path ahead for the long term in line with India's Amrit Kal the next 25 years to centenary of freedom in 2047. Nirmala Sitharaman set a goal of rapid capital spending and investment increasing capital spending in 2023 by 33% in 2023 over 2022, yet maintaining a stable fiscal path by keeping the deficit below 6%. ...

Simon Denyer's interview with Vinod Rai, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India. Rai has persisted in uncovering corruption in India. He was appointed by prime minister Manmohan Singh from India's Finance ministry five years ago, and runs an organization with 63,000 employees with accountants in all Indian states. Reports by his agency have uncovered giving away of natural resources and telecom licenses worth billions of dollars. He describes the amounts involved as huge and attributes the increase in accountability of politicians and ministers to active citizens groups. The Indian media and Supreme Court have supported efforts to increase accountability. The CAG has constitutional protection. Rai sees the CAG's role as examining government spending to uncover irregularities and make it accountable to parliament. India is rare in this respect compared to China, Russia and other emerging market countries because of its vibrant media and democracy. A 2010 report uncovered corruption in giving away mobile phone network licenses and a 2012 report uncovered allocation of coal land without a competitive auction, with loss in government revenues estimated at $30 billion. The reports showed prime minister Singh aware of the irregularities but unable or unwilling to call for transparency and proper process. Rai's six year term expires in May 2013. ...

Kozo Yamamoto joined the Finance Ministry in 1971, and is serving his sixth term as member of Japan's parliament. Since 2011 Yamamoto has convinced Abe, a colleague in parliament, about the need for reflationist policies now called Abenomics. This helped Abe make a comeback win for the prime minister's position for a second time. Yamamoto led the study group that convinced Abe of the need to delay the second increase in the consumption tax to 2017, and a 3 trillion yen stimulus package to encourage household spending, following the economy's fallback into a recession in Nov. 2014. He says it was important to not add to the headwinds the economy is facing. Yamamoto does not fall into the conservative mold of people from the Finance Ministry, as he takes tango lessons, is interested in fine pottery, and in Italian cooking. He has called bureaucrats in the ministry and central bankers "feckless" and "defiant," after years of questioning them in parliament and demanding reflationist policies. With the snap election in December 2014 the Abe led LDP is taking on the conservative Finance Ministry officials, who have insisted on sticking with the old timetable for the tax increase, regardless of the headwinds and slowing exports....

China takes another step to curb inflation. Effective May 18, 2011, China's largest banks will have a 21% reserve requirement. Food prices were up 11.5% in April. There were a larger number of bank loans in April 2011, of $112 billion, and a larger trade surplus of $11.4 billion. This may cause banks to lend in ways that go around these requirements, say experts. It may also ration capital to the entrepreneurial sectors of the economy.

Growing number of parttime workers and poverty levels in Japan. About 16% of the population in Japan lives on an income that is half the national median income, which is the way the government defines poverty. OECD studies in 2011 show Japan as sixth from the bottom of 34 members of the OECD. The poor quality of jobs is worsening the problem of the working poor, just as it is in the U.S. with lower wage manufacturing jobs and very low wage jobs in retail/ restaurant industries. Experts say the problem has worsened since 2012 when prime minister Abe was elected. Since 2012 the number of part time or irregular workers without permanent contracts has increased by 1.5 million, with parttime workers at 20 million, or 40% of the Japanese workforce. They point to the parental support with many young workers living at home, as is true also of Spain and Italy, that has mitigated their difficult situation. This piece in the Economist provides insights into the condition of parttime lower wage workers in Japan, a large number of whom are young people, a situation similiar to that in some European countries such as Spain and Italy. At the very low end as Japanese local and national governments- under pressure to cut spending with its high debt- reduce benefits, more people have been added to the welfare rolls with 2 million people now on welfare....

Synghman Rhee was made president of South Korea with US Gen. Douglas McArthur present in Seoul and the invasion by Communist North Korea on June 25, 1950 was around the corner.  Israel's Ben Gurion asked the UN to have Arab armies withdraw or it would have to go to war. In India the Kashmir invasion in the Himalayas starts on 12 September 1947 with Liaquat Ali Khan approving plans for tribals and Pathans to attack Kashmir.The states of Hyderabad, Travancore and Junagadh among princely states(which were one third of the British Empire) that had not been integrated. In Europe the Berlin Blockade had started in June 1948. This is the Asia and Europe that Patel saw in 1948 as he pondered on the meaning of Gandhi's success and what had still to be achieved. It is also a point of reflection in advance of  August 15, when India gained its freedom from British rule and set the stage for the decolonization of Indonesia from the Dutch, of Vietnam from the French, and Malaya from the British, followed by decolonization in all of Africa. ...

The Spanish government said on May 23, 2012 that it will provide 9 billion euros to help Bankia cover capital provisions for bad loan losses. The government took control of Bankia in early May 2012. Bankia was formed by merging 7 troubled cajas savings banks. It has about 10% of Spain's loans and deposits. Bankia has the largest exposure of financial institutions in Spain to real estate loans. Of 37.52 billion euros in loans for real estate, about half or 17.85 billion euros are troubled loans. Spain's approach to the banking crisis from the real estate bubble was to merge failing banks with smaller amounts of government money as aid, and having the new entities raise cash through initial public offerings. For Bankia most of the nonperforming loans were separated and placed in BFA, the parent company. Bankia did an IPO in July 2011 raising 3 billion euros. Since the IPO Bankia has lost half the value in its share price for large losses to investors. Under new capital provisioning rules set by the government for banks to adequately cover nonperforming real estate loans, Bankia needs 7.1 billion euros. An additional 1.9 billion euros is needed for capital requirements for a total of 9 billion euros, which is the amount of the capital injection by the Spanish government. During the pandemic there is public dissatisfaction with the conduct of politicians violating the trust placed by the people. Recent reports of lobbying in Germany involved the giving of contracts for health supplies and PPE leading to new rules set by the CDU party for its members.

The DW's Ines Pohl interviews Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina as she begins a fourth term as prime minister. Hasina says "everybody should take a break so we can accomodate the younger generation."  Hasina says she will not run again. 

As the economy continues growth at 6-7 percent Hasina emphasizes basic needs of food security, housing, health, education, job opportunities. "Every human being wants a better life we have to insure that", says Hasina.

A big change for Hasina is in girl's education. "What I have done is that education for girls is totally free up to the 12th grade and that we provide a stipend to them." Hasina sees the culture change into making parents rethinking girl's education as a big change, believing that the girl can earn her own money as a good thing when she is married. It is a change she believes will continue to change Bangladesh society.

The Willow oil project in Alaska by Conoco-Phillips which has leasing rights was allowed to go ahead by president Biden with some environmental protections. The leasing rights would have given Coonco-Phillips the right to challenge the government in court with potential damages awarded of about $5 billion, says this report in NYT. It also comes as Biden is faced with the issue of oil prices and supplies, and the impact on inflation with the cost of living crisis, as well as the impact of climate change.

Prime minister Modi spends the morning of his birthday at the Kunho National Park in Madhya Pradesh, a region known for its tigers. The cheetah population had disappeared in India and in this park over years of poor park management. Cheetahs were flown in from Namibia in Africa to Gwalior by special plane to give the cheetahs a new chance in their old habitat. Biodiversity is considered a big part of climate change action, in restoring habitat for animals in national parks a similar goal is achieved for restoring national parks.

Boris Johnson leads by a wide margin for election of a leader of the Conservative Party to succeed Theresa May as prime minister. Ms. May announced that she will set a date to resign from the leadership of the party after another Brexit vote in parliament. Mr. Johnson who has 39% support with Mr. Raab at 13%. Johnson favors a no-deal Brexit and no customs union arrangement with the European Union. His pro-Brexit wing lacks the support of other factions in his party and in parliament.
