He was briefed by EU officials, and had preparation with Blinken and Sullivan  before going into the meeting with Putin.  One result is that the meeting lays the ground for further discussions on many issues. By talking openly and plainly about US expectations from Russia- laying out expectations on cybersecurity and hacking, on arms control, on EU and other issues, the US made it possible to get tangible results. Both sides have an incentive to work for the interests of their countries including preventing another cold war, ensuring cyber security through mutual respect and US response capabilities, and arms control. One of the economic issues related to Nordstream 2 which was settled before the meeting with US respecting the wishes of Germany to go ahead with the project bringing Russian oil and gas through the seas to Germany. ...

New LNG terminals and imports help replace Russian supplies. In the long term Germany is way ahead in renewable energy than other countries and will craft its own solution in its own way.

The new cabinet of ministers of prime minister Modi following the second wave of the pandemic brings in 36 new faces to the Ministries, many in important new roles such as Health, Education, IT, Information and Broadcasting, Social Empowerment, Law. Railways. The Council of Ministers goes up to 78, three short of a statutory limit of 81. By bringing in new and younger faces as well as some experienced IAS and other persons in certain states, this new group. An experienced IAS officer was put in charge of the important Railways ministry, as the railways take on modernization and technological progress. Where ministers were lacking in performance the prime minister has made the needed changes. 

The large number of new faces gives the government an opportunity to train new people before the next parliamentary elections three years from now.

This DW.com report on Lebaon describes the launch of ration card program to help Lebanese families caught in poverty with the economic collapse there. Families will receive $126  per month  for one year in $556 million economic package to benefit 700,000 families. The funding backing for this project is needed from the World Bank. This report says about half of the people in Lebanon now live in poverty in one of the Middle East's once affluent regions. Since the economic crisis in 2019 DW.com says poverty levels have increased by 80%, local currency lost 90% of its value, and foreign exchange reserves decreased by $15 billion. 

Lebanon is a clear example of how mismanagement of the economy and political conflicts can ruin a country's prospects, with the sudden economic collapse bringing poverty and severe distress.

Robbie Shell has some good advice or ravel in retirement. Travel offseason or in less than peak season. Try to do it on your own for most flexibility so you can improvise to suit your mood and inclination. Stay in fewer places and at least 3 nights to feel at home in a place, less packing and unpacking that can be tiring. Choose secondary destinations not big name crowded places. Do a few things well that you enjoy and stop there, don't stretch yourself thin. And talk to the locals, don't be shy with strangers, you can make the trip come alive with what you can learn from people and places when we talk to the locals and people traveling like us. It can make the whole trip memorable, the stories they tell us and with whom we can share our own.

The WSJ offers this view on the UAW strike by 13,000 of 150,000 workers at GM, Ford, and Stellantis factories. No one gains from the strike, workers say are behind by 19% lower wages today than in 2008 after making concessions to the carmakers. They just want fair wages, and president Biden is backing the UAW union. Is Tesla and non union labor in the south going to put GM out of EV's? Unlikely, labor is a small part of EV cost, Tesla is too dependent on one leader with much of its glow reduced after the Twitter acquisition, whereas workers and management at GM at all levels are more resilient today than at any time in GM's history. President Biden also brings a tempering influence on both sides with the national interest uppermost in building a strong EV industry.

China's top trade negotiator is Liu he, Chinese Vice Premier. He is negotiating with Robert Lighthizer, the U.S. Trade Representative who heads the U.S. side in talks. Liu He says China is planning to reduce auto tariffs on U.S. imports to 15%. U.S. exported 266,000 cars to China in 2017. How the little known Hong Kong startup KAiOS Technologies with its low cost operating system is bringing low cost access to basic smart phone features, making them affordable for the 3 billion people lacking smartphones because of the cost. Jio phones of Reliance Technologies started this affordability change by working with KAiOS to bring out its $20 Jio phone and building a high speed 4G network in India to provide low cost data to these users. Reliance turned things upside down by bringing to India the cheapest data on wireless phone use of any country in the world. KAiOS is now the third most important operating system for wireless phones after Android and Apple. This is now spreading to Brazil, Indonesia, and Africa.

From north east Indiana and Indiana University SVB CEO Becker works his way up to a bank in Detroit with offices in California, and joins SVB in his twenties. He opened SVB's office in Boulder in 1996 and became president in 2008. Two things made SVB different. It seemed like the 2008 crisis had never happened. The management at the company Becker, Beck, and another executive Descheneaux hired from Bancwest, acted more like tech entrepreneurs and much less like bankers. They seemed to have mastered the way of optimistic talk to tech entrepreneurs, the language the culture, and did not share the same grasp of the economic environment of others who had weathered the 2008 crisis. For most of 2021 the company did not have a risk officer, according to the WSJ. And did not see the aspects of duration risk in having assets invested in long term Treasury's when interest rates were increased by the Fed rapidly to fight inflation decreasing the value of bonds. Startups and SVB management in their optimism both ignored the risk of not having the backing of FDIC insurance as insurance is limited to $250,000 in deposits, and most of the SVB's deposits were much larger. The US government wary of criticism of a bailout insists the FDIC backing provided to prevent systemic risk will not cost the taxpayers as it will come from a special assessment on banks. Nothing better explains the collapse than a look at the graphs of SVB's deposits in this WSJ report, in 2019 deposits and financial assets increase at about 50%, at about 100% doubling in 2020. Stock performance mirrored this.  By 2020 the supply chain disruptions were real and inflation was taking off, the Fed under Jay Powell was taking up the fight against inflation with sharp rise in interest rates. SVB did not grasp the seriousness of the situation. Venture capital gleaned the risks as they mounted and a bank run with withdrawals of as much of $42 billion led to the collapse.   ...

JFK and LBJ as presidents in the 1960's setup the Appalachian Regional Commission to lift it out of poverty. It increased income growth modest 4% above neighboring counties. Bush and Obama wars left this region and rural regions across the US neglected till Biden pulled out of Afghanistan and made rural America a top priority with the hundreds of millions of dollars needed to invest in it. It is as tough to tackle as the poverty in a similar forested and hilly part of eastern India called Orissa and Chattisgarh, which is only now receiving the attention of prime minister Modi in his third term. WSJ says J.D. Vance called mere rhetoric as no answer to such intractable problems in his Yale days, calling mere reference to cultural issues and immigration as forms of cultural heroin that would do little to change the centuries old poverty of the region.  Of the 39 year old senator J.D. Vance migration to MAGA, WSJ says it reminds them of Obama with only 2 years experience in the Senate- Vance has only a little over a year- who with lack of experience contested for the presidency of the US only to find Republicans poking Obama for seeking the presidency with such insignificant experience. This led to one of the least effective presidencies for lack of bipartisan support similar to that of Bush, both distracted by wars neither had the wisdom to not enter in the first place or to end quickly.   ...

Over 1 million people turn out across France in protests against pension reform that takes the retirement age from 62 to 64 years. Women feel more discriminated against in this reform. The prevalent age discrimination bias in France makes it harder to find jobs after 50 years, even harder after 60 years. There is a perception that the reform is not the first priority so soon after a pandemic with its after effects, and that other changes including age discrimination and the way it affects women need to be tackled before pension reform. The government lacks an overall majority, the eight unions are united in protests and possible strikes, creating a situation in which French president Macron needs to rethink his whole approach on addressing pension reform- when tacking the cost of living crisis and climate change, energy transition, are other priorities that need more attention at this time.

This report in The Guardian says he was found to have lobbied the government on behalf of two companies that were paying him over 100,000 pounds a year. Boris Johnson, Britain's prime minister initially supported Patterson but lacking support in parliament and with a backlash from his party's MP's decided to let parliamentary standards authority decide on Mr. Patterson's future. Lobbying in the US and Britain has resulted in a distortion of the national priorities. The Wall Street Journal asks readers to comment on the issue how to respond, what teachers and parents need to do, what Apple needs to do. Many teachers say the drift is towards shorter and shorter attention spans for children, and children lacking the essential ability to delve deeper into learning topics. One teacher says the iPhone does not belong in high schools. One response is that it is the responsibility of parents, yet another response says parents are getting exhausted in the process. Take away the iPhone and the same thing goes on in the computer, then on smart TV, finally the parent has to return the laptop because lessons are done online.

Names proposed in The Guardian for Tory leaders after the July 4 election should Rishi Sunak have to resign are clearly short of what Britain needs in leadership. It depends on which Tory MP can hold on to his seat. Suella Braverman, Priti Patel, Kim Badennoch, James Cleverly, Tom Tugendhat, Penny Mordaunt, all lack what is needed to lead the Conservatives on July 5, 2024. This has been true all through the last two decades.  David Cameron, Boris Johnson, Theresa May, Liz Truss who preceded Sunak for most of the last decade were also lacking in leadership. The decade wasted with Nigel Farage and David Cameron, Boris Johnson trying to get Britain out of the European Union has hurt Britain. Today most Britons want to go back to a Britain that is growing as part of the EU and Europe.

This WSJ Exclusive report shows 1.89 million breakthrough infection cases in the US and at least 72,000 hospitalizations, 20,000 deaths among fully vaccinated people in the US this year. The WSJ reviewed medical record data for 21 million fully vaccinated people, and an array of state reports to put together this analysis. It shows people with weaker immune systems and elderly are more susceptible for breakthrough infection and hospitalization. It also shows that vigilance is necessary in following covid protocols for social distancing, masks, hand washing, as the figures show smaller but yet significant percentage of people at ages younger than the elderly are getting breakthrough infections and getting hospitalized. 3.35% of people 35-49 years who were fully vaccinated but with waning immunity from taking the shots early on and lacking booster shots to build immunity back up again, and who are breakthrough infections, are hospitalized in this WSJ analysis of EPIC's Health data. For people 50-64 years this is 7.45%. Boris Johnson wins the race to lead the Conservative Party and become the next prime minister of Britain. Several ministers resigned underlining the problem he faces lacking support from the Conservative party members who do not support exit from the European Union without some deal or arrangement with the EU. He will lead a minority government that could fall with the loss of support from within the Conservative Party itself. Boris Johnson beat Jeremy Hunt by 92,153 votes to 46,656. He now has a margin of only three votes with the help of the Unionist Party of Northern Ireland and faltering support from members of the Conservative Party who see Boris Johnson's idea of simply leaving the EU on October 31st deal or no deal as problematic.

Years of civil war till 2003 and the shortage of funds mean that even basic equipment such as X ray machines and blood testing equipment are lacking in Liberian hospitals. Even with a effort that includes the U.S. Army and Air Force planes, a 25 bed hospital for healthcare workers using tents will take till early November to be operational. Showing that the response is sorely inadequate here in Liberia leading to the spread of Ebola to Europe and the U.S. by December at the current pace. Liberia's head of Ebola control says the international community has failed Liberia with its inadequate response. For the U.S. and Europe an inadequate response creates new dangers as the public has lost confidence in government response.

One day in 1964 Oxford mathematician Roger Penrose decided that an impossible object could actually exist - a black hole in the galaxy after a planet collapses.Einstein's theory of relativity had predicted that when stars collapse they could form infinitely dense points of matter that no light would be allowed to escape. The formation of black holes supports Einstein's Theory of Relativity says the Nobel Prize Committee. Penrose is 89 and says it is good to get the Nobel Prize when one is good and old. Stephen Hawking a younger physicist passed away and was not included in the prize after supporting Penrose's work. Two astronomers in the U.S. at UCLA, Los Angeles, get a quarter of the prize for their work detecting black holes in the sky and providing evidence of a super massive black hole in the center of our galaxy. Pennrose says "If you have got grand ambitions its bad to get a Nobel Prize too early, it gets in the way of your science." ...

One cocoa pod gives enough cocoa for one chocolate bar. Cocoa farms in Ghana and Ivory Coast are the world's largest producers of cocoa. Production declined in 2024 by about 25% in the two countries from bad weather with rain in the dry season and not enough rain in the west season. To protect farmers both West African countries decided to give farmers a fixed price for their cocoa. With surging prices farmers do not get to benefit from the higher price. Government fertilizer support is lacking.

With buyers in Europe insisting that no trees get cut on forested land for new farming, farmers are restricted to their old plots and have to take out old trees which costs more. As a result of these factors cocoa farms are shifting to other crops including palm oil in Ghana.

Other countries in West Africa including Cameroon and Nigeria are also producing cocoa. Outside of this region Ecuador and Brazil also produce cocoa.

As the Bush administration and Secretary Paulson look at Chapter 11 though acarefully arranged and orchestrated process with government support oversight and backing, Sorkin of NYT outlines how this would happen. It would clearly avoid Chapter 7 and be an orderly and organized process with warranty backing and debtor in possession financing. And echoing a lot of public sentiment on this issue Sorkin calls Wagoner's effort to say with a straight face that he still should run the company is laughable. It was his neglect of some of the important decisions that needed to be made that have created this situation and no serious changes can be made with current management and board.

Dagmar Breitenbach of DW.com  discusses today's youth in an interview with Albert Wunsch, author of the book "The Pampering Trap." Wunsch is a psychologist and education expert, who says today's youth lack the perseverance of their parent's generation. When confronted with difficult situations today's young people in Germany are seen as lacking maturity, persistence, and patience. Part of the problem is that parents have shielded their children from life's realities, says Wunsch. Parents want to be their kid's friends, and not act like an authority figure. In Germany authority figures still have the taint of looking bad, and parent shy away from that perception. The avoidance of conflict, including constructive conflict leaves children and youth at a disadvantage, because they go through life not having had to experience difficulties and learn from these experiences. Lacking this sensible kind of conflict in which parents have to ask themselves what is of value that they can transfer, the transfer of what one generation has learned is not being transferred to the next. Another problem is that young people prefer to hedge, not make commitments, says Wunsch. Financial literacy on how to manage money is also at a lower level. Some of these problems are mentioned for young people in America in the best selling book by Ben Sasse- "The Vanishing American Adult." Developments in Germany are also evident in other places. The dropout rate in Germany is also high. Studies cited here show this to be about 25% to 33% of college students dropping out.   ...
