It is only appropriate to bring up Aneurin Bevan in 2024 after the pandemic and as ordinary Britons seek to improve health and living standards, and their compatriots in the US also seek a better form of universal health coverage that works to provide better health  for less cost similar to Europe. In 1948 the National Health Services Act was passed into law with Aneurin Bevan having seen it through parliament as a member of the Labour party from Wales. The NHS was operational in July 1948. Clement Attlee summoned Bevan after winning in a landslide in 1948 and asked him to take the Housing and Health Ministry. Bevan was a coal miner's son who then used his skills in parliament to get passage of laws that created one of the most enduring  institutions of modern times. A docudrama by Prince about a visionary Welshman Aneurin Bevan as Health Minister who founded the NHS National Health Service of Britain. Michael Sheen plays Bevan.

New Yok has a mandatory foreclosure mediation program, with a 3rd party mediator working with the homeowner and the bank to achieve a loan modification. Of the 42,256 mortgages in New York approaching foreclosure since Jan 1, 2010, 75% went into the mediation process. Of this 80% achieved permanent modifications. In Connecticut 70% of 29,000 mortgages went into mediation with over 60% achieving permanent modifications for the same period. Where the mediation was optional as in New Jersey, only 20% of 50,713 mortgages went into mediation. In Nevada, another optional state, only 11% of 62,593 mortgages went into mediation. Mediation rates rocket when it is mandatory. One expert says that this is because mandatory mediation brings accountability and humanizes the process. By reducing the interest rate and making for lower payments the borrower stays in the home, and the bank continues to get its lower but consistent income stream compared to a default in payments. Today 20 states offer some form of mediation but only 2 states and 2 cities make it mandatory. This is happening in the disturbing context of a decline in troubled homeowners receiving assistance or modifications. About 470,000 homeowners received loan assistance in the 3rd quarter, down 17% from the second quarter, and down 32% from the same quarter a year earlier. The paradox is that one way to stimulate the economy that is not being tried is to mitigate losses in the housing market for homeowners and lenders. UK has reached 50% of people vaccinated or 33 million people, with July 31, 2021, the target date for all adults to be vaccinated. It took 136 days to do this for 64% of adults. Dudley Althaus looks at Mexico's 2018 election from a working class suburb of Mexico City called Valle de Chalco. Once a squatter settlement outside Mexico City this area was courted by the ruling PRI Institutional Revolutionary party for 3 decades with a social investing program building sewers, water and power lines. Today this area like others in the state of Mexico have turned to a new party Morena led by Manuel Lopez Obrador, to find a way out of the corruption, violence and failure of the rule of law under the PRI. Obrador left the socialist PRD party to form Morena in 2014 after running for president on the PRD ticket twice. The thirst for change is widespread inside Mexico giving Obrador a higher vote margin in state of Mexico than the 53% he won overall in Mexico. The PRI won just 16% of the vote. The old politics of piggy bank and patronage of the PRI is now discredited in Mexico.  The reason the old politics does not work anymore is the change in places like this from a shanty town of tin shacks to a bustling city of 400,000. This place has a technical school, a state university branch, rows of well kept cinder  block homes along with malls and wealthier homes. With basic necessities being met Mexican workers are turning to larger issues of national identity and how the next chapter can be written in the social contract. Obrador's nationalist message and criticism of the globalized economy struck workers and middle class as the right direction for Mexico. This came just as president Trump brought new views on immigration and NAFTA on the other side of the border challenging Mexico to find its own direction and independent position in the world economy, even building new links to other countries in Europe and Asia. ...

UK government tax authority, HMRC has 42 billion in unpaid taxes from business and individuals under the Tory government, says this report in The Guardian. This would be more than what all local authorites in England will spend on social care, environment and planning, culture, it says. Another 4.5 billion pounds were lost in fraud and error. The Guardian calls Tory prime minister Sunak "the billionaires prime minister" and says "the little people" are us.

The new tiered system of tighter restrictions passed in the British parliament 291 to 78 with 51 Tory rebels voting against and 10 Tories abstaining. Labour abstained from the vote getting it to pass. Tory rebels are voting with their constituents in Tory seats in parliament that have lower rate from coronavirus and see the restrictions hurting the lives of people in their areas. The prime minister had to make a special plea to them to get it passed including promising to review in granular detail these areas which needed lifting restrictions because of low infection rates.

Other steps the government is taking are to seek emergency approval of vaccines with the first approval done for Pfizer vaccine. This means Britain will be the first country to start vaccinations in 24-48 hours- December 3 or December 4.

A Links column cites the Oakland California based sustainability think tank's estimate that it takes about 17 million barrels of oil to produce all the plastic bottles for the water which is enough to fuel more than 1 million cars and light trucks for 1 year. Mike Pompeo, U.S. Secretary of State meets with Tory group of MP's that want to see other issues relating to China tackled following exclusion of Huawei from UK 5G networks, and suspension of the extradition treaty with Hong Kong. This includes 120,000 Chinese students attending British universities and many students involved in advanced scientific research. Both Labour party leaders and Conservative party leaders support taking action to protect British interests relating to sharing sensitive technology, and national security. The U.S. is moving forward with a decoupling of economic relations with China on issues of sensitive technology, transfer of technology,  ownership of American tech companies, manufacturing jobs and regaining industrial strength, and on trade that transfers wealth from America to China. Britain is having to restructure its relations with China based on the general trend in U.S. China relations. China is the UK's 6th destination for exports of goods and services, only 3.6%. U.S. is far larger about 14%. The UK also has one third of its investments overseas going to the U.S. The U.S. has total investments in the UK of 758 billion dollars in 2018, showing that Britain's relationship with the U.S. is very close. ...

Supreme Court of Panama annulls contract  as unconstitutional for the Panama Canal ports Balboa and Christobal given to CK Hutchinson of China. One more step towards asserting the Monroe Doctrine in the western hemisphere that dates back to Monre in 1824 and also to Teddy Roosevelt in 1904 who as Secretary of the Navy and president asserted the Monroe Doctrine and built up the US Navy. It was under TR that the Panama Canal was built. The story of the Canal is told by David McCollough in his book on the Panama Canal - "Path Between the Seas 1870-1914." It was an engineering feat for the US, and also one that involved fighting malaria and other diseases, and clearing jungle territory.

This inside account of the events leading to the cancellation of the meeting with Kim Jong Un of North Korea shows how quickly the idea of a meeting between the two leaders unraveled following Trump's statements about the Libyan example being followed by North Korea. Soon after the suggestion for a Trump meeting was made by Kim Jong Un to South Korean officials Mr Trump picked up and endorsed the idea. North Korea made a public announcement critical of Mr. Trump  and National Security Adviser John Bolton took this up with Mr. Trump at 10 pm on May 23, 2018.  This report says Mr. Trump fearing that Kim Jong Un was looking for a way to back out of the talks acted first- possibly sensing that Mr. Trump could be made to look weak and small if the situation continued to develop and the U.S. is seen as a desperate suitor. The meeting had been set for June 12 in Singapore.  In the end the South Koreans and the Japanese were the last to learn about the cancellation and were taken by surprise by Trump's decision. ...

The Liberal Democrats Ed Davey attracted attention with some jet ski stunts just before the election. It showed the lighter side of him. Lib Democrats want to be a friend of Labour and Keir Starmer. Together  the 34 percent Labour voting and 12% Libs, 7% Greens adds to 53% of the vote, Versus the Tory 24% and Reform UK wing of Tory at 14% adding up to 38%. This was apparent in the Q&A session in parliament. Not so well known is that this kind of fits Davey well- he is caring for a teenage disabled son and has cared for his terminally ill mother. The Libs won safe Tory seats is how it all started with someone coming up with the stunts idea to get media to focus on the Libs.  In parliament it is strange as if Libs are the friendly Opposition in Q&A and Sunak unconvincing as Leader of the Opposition. With Tory conservative vote split into Farage and Sunak factions, the Libs won 71 seats. In parliament now Labour has 404 seats, Tories 121, and Davey's Lib Dems 72 seats, Farage Reform just 5 seats after so much work pulling down Tories, and Scottish Nationalists just 9 seats. ...
