BP's plans to sell its 50% stake in the Russian joint venture TNK-BP. The stake would be worth about $30 billion, according to analysts. BP says it has discussed this with potential buyers. Antonio Horta-Osorio of Banco Santander, is a Portuguese native who took up the task of turnaround of Lloyds Bank after the British government took a 39% stake in the bank during the financial crisis. He is credited with a major turnaround, making it possible for the government to sell 6% of its stake earlier than anticipated. He reduced the dependence on short term funding sources and sold off assets overseas. He has also strengthened its retail banking operations in Britain. He took on the task with a micromanaging approach and had to be admitted to a rehab clinic after 5 sleepless nights. Following this period of two months of recovery the Board rehired him in Jan 2012 and he delegated tasks to other managers. Osorio was a senior manager at Banco Santander when he took up the Lloyds job. The stock price of Lloyds has soared in 2013.

GM surprised German officials on June 28, 2009, with the information that Opel would need an additional 300 million euros. Also significant was the development that Fiat learned of earlier in the week that Opel's finances were much worse than previously disclosed by GM. Instead of a $1.5 billion loss Opel expects a loss of $2 billion to $3 billion for 2009. Fiat pulled out of the talks. At that point the German government put together a deal in a memorandum of understanding in the next 36 hours, with Magna International taking a 20% stake in the new Opel, the Russian government through its bank Sberbank taking 35% stake, GM taking 35%, and Opel's employees taking 10%. The German government's position was focussed on protecting the 25,000 Opel jobs in Germany, with both labor leaders and politicians supporting this. Angela Merkel, the German leader spoke on phone with Mr Putin of Russia to firm up the deal. Magna International, a Canadian autoparts supplier with Austrian roots provides the carmaking expertise. Cooperation with Russian carmaker Gaz raises the prospect of selling 500,000 Opel vehicles in Russia. Opel produces about 2 million cars in Europe and has 50,000 employees. ...

Deutsche Bank plans a share sale for 8 billion euros in 2017 after being hurt by legal settlements and a decision to reverse the sale of retail unit Postbank. Macron says about the ban of under 15's by social  media platforms-  the emotions of children and teenagers should not be "for sale or manipulated by American platforms and Chinese algorithms." The bad effects  on all adolescents of social media, especially on girls is seen in mental health issues for teenagers and the lack of focus for education in schools. It is a big price to pay for all countries to ruin the prospects in life of a new generation of children who are growing up in ways that no previous generation of children in the history of humanity was exposed to. This is no time for dangerous experiments with our children. It is an interesting comment on today that it is lobbyists (and donations) for platforms that are the problem. And that these lobbyists are from what is called Far Right, Right,  Left, Far Left, it makes no difference they all get paid for work, which shows that such labels have little meaning today- looking for common sense and what is right for (children's) health and education is the best approach not falling in line with Far Right, Right,  Far Left, Left, or Moderate or some such label or a Culture War label that is essentially meaningless when it comes to common sense. Good common sense, that much is sufficient. Many other important issues we face require the same approach. ...
