A detailed look at how Enel is trying to penetrate the Russian power market. It is investing $6 billion in Russia. Mr. Fulvio Conti, CEO of Eni, has a clear idea how he is going to operate in Russia. He has developed close ties with Gazprom, has Gazprom as a partner in ownership of former Yukos gas assets which supply power plants it is acquiring ownership of (OGK-5's constellation of power plants in western Russia.) Eni uses Gazproms pipeline network to get the gas to its plants. In this way Eni feels it has a winning model to convert gas into electricity with low risk. Eni can then wait for what it expects will be gradual progress towards liberalization of electricity markets in Russia, so that prices will be higher and give Eni good margins. It will also put Eni ahead of German and other European competitors. Russia's electricity market is expected to grow rapidly as its economy grows. It needs $120 billion in investment to build further its electricity infrastructure and foreign investment is needed in this area. Eni has also offered Gazprom reciprocal ownership of power plant assets in Italy in its negotiations, to build a win-win situation....

Bezos is stepping down from the day to day role of CEO to focus on new growth opportunities. His role as CEO will be taken by the head of the cloud computing business, Andy Jassy. He joined in 1997. Amazon was started in 1994.  Amazon's growth comes from carefully focussing on specific growth fields, first retail, then cloud computing, and changing the way business is run with innovative ways of conducting business. One click and Prime in retail, Kindle e reader in books, and massive investments in logistics, warehousing, cloud computing to run its business efficiently. During the pandemic criticism of low wages for warehouse workers was met with an increase in wages to $15 an hour.  Management style discourages meetings. Most meetings are held in the morning, and after 10 am. The person presenting is asked to hand out a six page memo which is read in silence before the meeting. The idea is that writing it out helps make the ideas clear. Decisions are made in this way. Employees are asked to think in innovative ways to run the business. Thrift is practiced as part of the Bezos way. Bezos is relatively young, only 57 years. Bezos was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1964 when his mother was in high school. His mother married a Cuban immigrant, Miguel Bezos 4 years later and the boy took the name Bezos. He spent much time at his grandparents ranch in South Texas working on the farm, and went to school at Princeton University, graduating in 1987. In 1993 he married Mackenzie Tuttle, a novelist, then started an online bookstore called Amazon from Seattle. Before this he worked at a telecom company and at a hedge fund, which helped him finance his new online bookstore. Trump tax cuts were seen as helping people in the 95th to 99th percentile for most of the gains by the Tax Policy Center, with little benefit to lower income households. Penn Wharton Model shows for the bottom 60% of the taxpayers the after tax benefit is only 1.5% with much larger gains for wealthy households if they are renewed in 2025. The fad faded in the West, but it is popular today in Nairobi. Donated from the west the Rollerblade brand skates have made their way into East Africa- creating a skating craze. They zoom across at 110 kilometres an hour. Some learn from Google and You Tube videos. It creates a sense of community for young people, who meet with people from different tribes and don't pay attention to ethnic groups in a place where ethnicity is rampant.

The latest news from Catalonia ahead of the Dec. 21, 2017 election shows a hugely divided region in Catalonia, as prime minister Rajoy of Spain campaigns in Barcelona. The head of the left wing ERC party which is likely to win the largest share of the vote according to a poll in newspaper La Vanguardia was arrested along with fired ministers in the Puigdemont government. This time unlike the 2015 election ERC party says it will not join Mr. Puigdemont in a single pro independence bloc. Mr. Puigdemont is in exile in Brussels after declaring independence for Catalonia. Barcelona's mayor Ada Palau who won in 2015 on a platform showing support for people who suffered after the financial crisis and real estate meltdown, says she does not support the independence movement. Palau says Mr. Puigedemont and others "tricked the population for their own interests." She is critical of the way prime minister Rajoy handled the crisis including invoking Article 155 to dismiss the elected government for new elections. Palau has broken the pact with the Socialist Party. This shows a fragmented and divided population when it comes to independence. This BBC report says about half of Catalans today do not support independence for a complete break with Spain. ...
