US Iran Memorandum of Understanding signed by DJT and Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian, May 17 2026, with Pakistan as mediator. A key factor was China and the US president called China's actions "fantastic" in achieving the signed agreement to work out the details within 60-90 days of talks. Without China's help in imports and other assistance Iran's economy would be hard to sustain. China's own interests are best served by maintaining peace in the region as it continues to develop and modernize its economy. Russia also supported the agreement. Another contributor was India by setting an example for modernization and economic development as the true pathway for the people of West Asia, by bringing UAE, Egypt and other Arab nations in North Africa such as Morocco together in the direction of economic development and showing that cooperation in the region including with Israel is the best way forward. From the perspective of long term future of the region the presence of Modi and India at the G-7 meeting next to Macron and DJT shows there is now a G-8, with India joining Japan as two key Asian nations in the G-8. In this way the administration has achieved something that was never possible in either the old G-8 (that included Russia) under previous administrations after 2000. DJT's meeting with Putin in Alaska, and his visit to Beijing for discussions with Xi Jinping in 2025 and 2026, achieved the G-8 setting with India plus keeping China and Russia fully engaged in separate one on one arranged talks. This is a rare feat achieved in 2026 for the US, China, India and Russia, EU, Germany, that has never been done before to the lasting credit of the leaders DJT, president Xi, prime minister Modi, president Putin, and chancellor Merz- to their patience even in times of disagreement, their efforts to persevere when times were rough, and their foresight and wisdom in seeking agreement around what they shared in common.  ...

Magggie Penman of the Washington Post interviews Diana Nyad, who says she is fitter, stronger at 76 than before. Part of this, says Nyad, comes from being nicer, more forgiving of people. One thing as you get older your connection with people around you means everything. You want to "embrace the chaos", says Nyad. It means getting to know the person next to you wherever you are, what is their life story. For Nyad even if you are an atheist like she is, be an atheist in awe at the sheer wonder of nature and the world. That gives you energy and gratitude that fills up your life. ...

White House Correspondents Dinner shooting on April 25 2026 at Washington Hilton, the scene of the shooting of Ronald Reagan decades earlier. It is unbelievable that over 2000 guests including the US president and important members of his cabinet would be assembled in a hotel in Washington DC that is not designed for this type of event security. The Washington Post raises questions about the security as the assailant stayed in the hotel. The president DJT says this shows why the White House should have a ballroom or hall that can hold such an event that is designed with security in mind. A 31 year old graduate in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology who worked as a tutor in science subjects was the assailant who was apprehended. Secret Service agents acted quickly to clear the podium where the president and vice president were seated. Most of the people in the hotel ballroom were in complete shock. DJT has not attended previous correspondents dinners saying the media has fake news- much of the press in the US tends to have political leanings that slant the news in one direction or the other and television channels exaggerate the divisions for profit by supplying information tailored to what audiences in their political spectrum want. That may be seen as a clever business strategy when it really hurts the  democratic process that has been nurtured for 250 years. It could be said that young people in particular believe what they are told by media run for profit, opinion created for profit, and this leads to violent behaviour. A robust debate has always taken place in the US- on Iran compare that with the Mexican War under president Polk in the 1850's, before the civil war when Lincoln debated Douglas, under Democrat Harry Truman when he did a whistlestop rail campaign after the war against Republican Wendell Wilkie, yet the fragmentation of rural-urban, white male and white female, within minorities today is excessively and without remorse stoked by the television channels and the newspapers.  ...

View from Le Monde in France on the visions of Macron, Merz,, and Rubio for rebuilding the transatlantic alliance.  France under Macron sees less hope for the rebuild of the transatlantic friendship. The Germans under Merz and Soder of Bavaria see it differently. As shown in Nina Haase's interveiw with Johann Wadephul Germany's Foreign Minister, he sees Marco Rubio's speech very positively and like Merz wants to rebuild the relationship. It is not fully understood in Europe that Vance was also. partly reflecting his own views and his own tendency to sound and act like DJT. RUbio was once a candidate for the presidency in 2014 whom DJT had to defeat in the primaries. Rubio's recent book on how the elites have failed US and Europe shows a man of his own convictions. He and DJT agree because he brings out the best that is in the Republican party today to look back at its heroes from the past, Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln with a profound belief in western civilization and America's role in it. When seen in this context it changes everything- all that talk of Vance means little because Vance is a much less experienced politician from the midwestern state of Ohio compared to Rubio with his long years in the Florida legislature and in the Senate in Foreign Affairs. Rubio speaks for the United States so much more so than an inexperienced and very young politician from Ohio who has emerged only in the last 5 years, compared to Rubio's 20 years in public service. ...

Paid Leave for caregivers, parents, is a missing part of America's progress into a society that cares for women, children and elderly parents. America is the only nation among developed countries that lacks paid leave. Biden's Families and Workers Plan was designed to make this part of the fabric of American society. The 12 weeks paid leave originally planned is particularly needed for caregivers, mostly women, and is now down to 4 weeks. It was then taken out on the resistance of 1 senator from West Virginia out of 50 Democratic party senators. Women are hard hit during the pandemic and are unable to get back into the work force. Most Republicans if in the shoes of women as caregivers, or mothers needing maternity leave for children, would support this essential feature of a modern or well developed society, yet this is often missing as the nation is divided because about a third of Americans have paid leave and the rest lack paid leave. This piece of the bill for paid leave is now back in the bill in Congress, in another effort to get this through. ...

What is the UNRWA? It stands for United Nations Refugee Works Agency, and it is mainly to assist giving aid to Palestinian refugees. The European Commission has committed to give $90 million to the agency, Sweden is adding $20 million and Canada is also going to add aid money to help the desperate refugees displaced from their homes in Gaza. Johann Forsell, Sweden's international development minister says "The humanitarian situation in Gaza is devastating and the needs are acute. We will monitor closely to ensure UNRWA follows through on what it has promised." Since the war began in Gaza 162 members of the UNRWA staff have been killed, the highest of any UN agency in any conflict.
