Germany avoided a recession with growth rate of 1.9% in 2022. Imports were higher with higher energy prices and the trade surplus fell from 175 billion euros to 79 billion euros. Trade surplus declined for 5th year in a row. Rising inflation dropped in November and December. UBS and Bank of America reach a settlement with Detroit before the city declared bankruptcy. The settlement was for interest rate swap contracts signed by Detroit officials in 2005, and settles the contracts for 75 cents on the dollar or $230 million. There is safe harbor for traders and banks in interest rate swaps or derivative contracts, so that the usual stay that blocks creditors from collecting debts does not operate. This kind of treatment for derivative contracts makes no logical sense in the context say experts. The swap contracts of 2005 were signed at a time the city took out a $1.4 billion variable interest rate loan to put into its pension funds, with the swaps as a hedge against rising interest rates. In fact Detroit is seeking a $350 million loan from Barclays Capital and it needs to resolve the swap for that loan. From this loan UBS and Bank of America get their $230 million leaving $120 million for streetlights, police and city services badly needed today. Public interest considerations of this kind were not considered by Congress when it made the rule for safe harbors universal in derivative contracts to reduce systemic risk of one financial institution dragging others into a systemic crisis. The safe harbor make it harder for a judge to say this thing smells and make attempts to change it. ...

In the quarter ending July 31,2009 HP PC sales were$8.43 billion and $386 million in earnings, accounting for 12% of profits, printer and ink were $5.66 billion and $960 million in earnings for 30% of overall profit. The majority report of the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commisssion says Alan Greenspan and Ben Bernanke, regulators, and several financial institutions were responsible for what was an "avoidable disaster." The report criticizes Mr Greenspan for advocating deregulation and considers the failure to stem the flow of toxic mortgages under his leadership at the central bank as a "prime example" of negligence. The report also says that the New York Fed under Timothy Geithner, now Treasury Secretary, also missed signs of trouble at Citigroup and Lehman. There are 6 Democrats and 4 Republicans on the Commission. The fourth Republican has his dissent, calling policies to promote home ownership, the role of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac a major cause. The panel was hobbled by internal divisions and staff turnover, which have made what should have been a report of major significance into one marred by partisan differences. The majority report itself was heavily shaped by Phil Angelides, the committee's chairman, and it has many literary phrases. Overleveraging was a critical factor in the crisis. For every $40 in assets, the US's 5 largest investment banks had only $1 in capital to cover losses. The banks hid their leveraging with derivatives, off-balance sheet entities and other devices. The banks relied heavily on short-term debt which worsened the crisis. The report also said the Clinton adminstration's decision to exempt over-the counter derivatives from regulation- made in the last year of Clinton's term- also helped set up the ground for later events leading to the crisis....

A $300 million retooling investment at Michigan Truck plant three years ago will make it possible for Ford to convert the plant to production of as many as 8 new models some from from Europe with a relatively small investment of $75 million. Michigan Truck Plant is in the midst of a 11 week shutdown because of unsold inventory of SUV's and trucks. Next spring Ford will move production of the Expedition and Lincoln Navigator to its Kentucky Truck Plant and then begin retooling the Michigan Truck Plant, with all of the plant's 1000 employees transferred next door to make Focus cars at the Wayne Assembly Plant where its adding a third shift in January. Truck and SUV plants in Kentucky and Mexico will probably undergo similiar makeovers at a cost of about $250 million each to rettol according to company estimates.

This worked when it sold its Iraqi operation to a Kuwaiti company, and its other assets to a Russian company. Russia's mobile operator VimpelCom Ltd. made a deal worth $6 billion for most of Orascom's assets in 2011. In North Korea this strategy failed with the loss of the local operation to North Korean authorites.

With gasoline prices at $4.66 a gallon, $1.45 higher than the national average California governor Newsom is accepting a change to slow the transition to alternative fuels. Many refineries in California are planning to close. Relations between Chevron and the state government are improving but there is a long way to go to make a smoother transition to giving price relief to the public with the declining production in the state over two decades. In 1990 California oil production was at about 900,000 barrels a days by 2000 this had dropped to 700,000. By 2025 about 300,000 barrels a day.
