Ko Bo Kyi spent years in prison after protests over the army annulling Burma's 1990 elections. U.S. CFTC head Gensler favored a rule that would require asset managers like Vanguard and Pimco to contact at least five banks when looking for a price on a derivatives contract. The idea was to foster competition among the banks. Gensler failed to get the third vote from Democratic commissioner Wetjen on this requirement and settled for a requirement to contact at least two banks. The new rules for derivative contracts are being set to meet the rule making requirements set by the Dodd-Frank legislation in the U.S.

Changing the way health care operates in the country, federal and state government agencies and the commercial insurers are looking at paying primary care physicians and family practice physicians more than the average $60 a visit that is paid out so that these physicians spend more time understanding their patients. At the present time the smaller payment per patient results in doctors only spending a few minutes with each patien. In the long run by diagnosing and treating diseases early through a better understanding of patients this upfront increase in payments should result in lower costs resulting from late diagnosis and treatment, and the problems that occur when the patient is not treated early on. It should also result in better and fewer errors in diagnosis.

The Obama administration was slow to respond to the democracy movement in Libya. France's Sarkozy and Britain's Cameron led the effort to support the Libyan rebels with airpower, no -fly-zones, and military assistance. This opinion in The Guardian points out the difficulty that Lula da Silva faces in governing after a narrow margin of victory of about 1.8 percentage points in the presidential election in Brazil. It is a very different country than the one in which he was first elected in 2003. The right wing parties gained 249 seats compared to 141 seats for the Lula PT party in the lower house of parliament. This means Lula will have a harder time governing, needing centrist party support, and tackling the large fiscal deficit of 8% of GDP.

In the elections for the governors of states Bolsonaro won in 14 of 27 states including the large state of Sao Paulo. Lula owed his victory to large margins in the 10 relatively poor northeastern states where incomes are below $400 a month including Bahia. Where incomes are over $400 as in Sao Paulo the vote was in Bolsonaro's favor.

Republicans and DJT's perception of Europe as 27 states is likely to be false. Germany and France in the 21st century may just be stepping into a role that was prepared since the formation of the European community in the 1950's with Germany and France at the core of Europe. It may surprise many that Europe just steps into this role. And with it a reconstituting of the defense architecture of Europe that needed to be done after the fall of the Berlin Wall and not left to the vagaries of free market capitalism that have created the present situation. “It was not a spontaneous reaction to interventions by Zelenskyy, but obviously a manufactured escalation,” Merz of Germany has said recently of recent White House happenings.  “My absolute priority will be to strengthen Europe as quickly as possible so that, step by step, we can really achieve independence from the USA,” Germany's Merz says and means it even if it confounds the US, China and other nations. ...
