Oracle introduced relational database based on rows and columns and has dominated this business for three decades. Companies are transitioning to NoSQL databases because it has advantages including data analytical capabilities. New companies such as Workday are offering better products. Oracle's business in server is also declining. This is an example of new technologies and competitors upending the market for established players, a situation facing companies such as Dell, Oracle and H-P. Oracle has made acquisitions in the cloud computing field, but this will not change the basic situation facing Oracle of obsolescence in technologies.

Eurozone data shows the GDP growth far outpaced the U.S.. In the first quarter GDP growth was 0.5% from the prior year, the annualized rate at 1.8% compared to 0.7% for the U.S.. European stocks are benefiting from the recovery in the eurozone. A global recovery in inflation is also helping, with political risk fading. Recovery is also taking place in parts of southern Europe, with 3% growth in Spain.

Brazil's beer market for long dominated by AmBev will now have a new competitor. Japan's Kirin Holdings acquired Brazilian beermaker Schincariol for $2.57 billion. AmBev has 69% of the Brazilian market and Schincariol has 11%. Schincariol is strong in Brazil's northeast. The Brazilian beer market is growing at 11% a year compared to only 1-2% a year in the U.S.
