Australia's foreign minister, Julie Bishop, says New Zealand's Labour Party revealed this information to undermine the government, that it was contacted by the Australian Labour party which is the opposition in parliament. No new solutions to problems of high unemployment (reaching 5 million "paradores" or unemployed as a recent front page headline in extra large print in the paper Cinco Dias declared) from the Socialist party and the Partido Popular. Polls after prime minister Papademos assumed office show nearly three fourths of Greeks see his appointment as a "positive" step for Greece. The popularity of the Socialist party of Papandreou has suffered the most in public opinion. One poll shows only 11% of Greeks would vote for the Socialist party, compared to 21% for the New Democracy party. The New Democracy party has widened its lead over the Socialists.

He sees the need for China to change its policy and work with the U.S., South Korea and Japan for a lasting solution for North Korea. Also absent from the calculations of the countries involved is the future of the North Korean people, emphasized in the editorial by the editorial Board of the Washington Post on Dec. 20, 2011.

The base issue related to a campaign promse to move the American base out of Okinawa and even out of Japan. The North Korean government's aggressive behaviour led to a changing perception of the base issue, with a lengthy disagreement with Washington and eventual reneging on the campaign promise. By this time Hatoyama's popularity dropped to 25% and he resigned. Also resigning is Mr Ozawa, the Democratic Party's secretary-general. The indecisiveness and lack of leadership on issues made it difficult to sustain the electoral support which led to the Democratic party winning an overall majority, mainly to bring change for the post Liberal Democrat era.

Under the present arrangement 100 seats go to the west, 60 to the east, and 40 to the south.
