The problems in owning an asset like the Chrysler Group. Dennis Berman of the WSJ says, its less like owning a car company and more like having a hard luck case. Thats because Chrysler Group carries an estimated $18 billion in unfunded health care and other benefit costs. These were built up in another era of automotive dominance of the Big Three car companies of Detroit, but are carried over to another era when this dominance has disappeared. In the 5 years 2002 to 2007, Chrysler's $2.7 billion in operating profit actually translated into a $1.75 billion loss, when including these payments. So from a banker's point of view, Chrysler's value is a small fraction of the $39 billion Daimler paid for Chrysler. In fact many bankers value Chrysler at zero, because of the liabilities associated with it, including the difficulties to get the unions to modernize the workplace and avoid class warfare labor negotiations. This is how the financial markets see it, as Daimler's stock market value went up by $20 billion after it disclosed it was looking for abuyer for Chrysler, and was determined to separate Daimler from Chrysler. ...

How ethanol plants create opportunities for the local economy but also problems as production of ethanol requires scarce water resources in states like nebrask the No. 3 state after Iowa and Illinois in corn production. A 50 million gallon ethanol plant could use up 150 million gallons of water to make fuel, thats 3 gallons of water for 1 gallon of ethanol fuel. In the Lower Republican river Natural Resources District of Nebraska farmers which is a dry drought prone area dependent on underground water formations for irrigation, farmers pumped out 62.6 billion gallons of water from underground. Now that a court ruled that Kansas should get its fair share of water from the Republican River which is sees its levels affected by the underground pumping near the river, this water district is having to put irrigation meters that are checked after each harvest to limit use to 11 inches on average over 5 years. This article shows how scarce resources like water can be used up in the production of ethanol, and how that can complicate life for farmers even though the extra income from ethanol plants can boost incomes in depressed farm communities....

Contrary to earlier media reports of Mr Naimi the Saudi oil minister saying that the market was healthy and "well balanced" and that no cuts were expected, it turns out that after extensive debate the OPEC ministers agreed on a cut of 520,000 barrels a day or less than 1% of the world's oil supply. It would put OPEC production back to 32.7 million barrels a day same as the first 3 months of 2008. This was done to avert excess supply in the market but Algeria's oil minister said that this would not affect the downward trend in prices as buyer nations in USA and Europe had already built up supply inventories from weaker demand. Iran, Libya and Algeria argued that there was a supply glut or imbalance from reduced demand. OPEC President is Chakib Khelil of Algeria. Russia's top energy ministers and head of Roseft attended ths OPEC meeting. Sechin head of Rosneft Russia's largest oil company run by the government said tht Russia is preparing a memorandum of understanding for deeened cooperation with OPEC. General Motors lost a third of its value in a single day as the Dow plunged 679 points on Thursday, October 9, 2008. Why? Citigroup Global Markets estimates that GM which needs between $11 billon and $14 billion in cash to run its business, would end next year with $998 million. Citigroup says "very thin even with a $5 billon asset sale execution." And car sales have not yet reflected the economic downturn's impact on unemployment and consumption, and the effect of foreclosures increasing at an accelerating rate on consumption, as well as the impact of loss of savings in a severe drop in value of shares of over 25% in 2008. As conditions depress the global auto market from Europe to China and India to Brazil, so the few bright spots for GM and Ford overseas are fading quickly. Gimme Credit, an independent ratings agency says Ford has "nine to 12 quarters of liquidity". Citigroup estimates Ford would end next year with an "adequate cash surplus of $5.7 billion". But from the standpoint of the deepening economic downturn these numbers could change as sales drop further in 2009 and increase the losses at Ford. ...

The resignation of U.S. Defense Secretary Mattis comes as a result of Mattis being unable to change plans by president Trump for a withdrawal from both Afghanistan and Syria. WSJ discloses that at a meeting on December 18 at the Pentagon, with John Bolton, White House National Security Advisor, Mike Pompeo, Secretary of State, and John Dunford, chairman Jt. Chiefs of Staff, Mattis could not temper the president's plans. On Thursday December 20th Mr. Mattis decided to resign. He then met Mr. Pompeo and onto the White House to meet president Trump. He and Mr. Trump discussed their contrasting world views in a 45 minute meeting, and Mr. Mattis handed over his resignation letter to Mr. Trump. Military officials were particularrly blindsided by the withdrawal from Syria. U.S. policy has vacillated back and forth in the intervention in Syria with president Obama also hesitant to commit troops in Syria. In the meeting Mattis understood that even a minimal presence in Syria was unacceptable to president Trump who ordered the removal of the 2000 troops there. The withdrawal from Afghanistan was also a result of limited patience with the war there in the 18th year and no sign that the Taliban influence had diminished since the war began- after Trump added 3000 troops to the 14,000 stationed in Afghanistan. The U.S. has 5500 troops in Iraq and there is talk about drawing this number down. The concern for the defense department is that how U.S. allies will see the withdrawal, and their perception of how reliable the U.S. is as a partner. For president Trump the cost is measured in terms of the long period the U.S. was engaged in the region without any tangible results, and U.S. not allies bearing most of the cost.      ...

With China's automobile market declining for the fifth month in a row, and trade tensions rising, it now appears that carmakers such as Ford expanded too quickly in the Chinese market. Ford, Peugeot, and Hyundai appear to have poorly times their expansion in China, expanding at the tail end of the Chinese boom just ahead of the new Trump administration's efforts to challenge China's lopsided trade balance.  It has become so bad that this report shows workers at a Peugeot factory in China spending their days washing floors and attending Communist political study sessions at work. At a Ford plant workers shifts are reduced to a couple of days a month. Sales grew 3% in 2017 and declined 2% in the first 11 months of 2018, after increases of 14% in previous years taking the market to 28 million in a dizzying ride as it surpassed the U.S. sales of 17.5 million. Overcapacity is a problem in China with the aggressive expansion. There is capacity to make 43 million cars, but will produce 29 million in 2018, according to PwC, consulting firm. Ford meanwhile put in a new plant in Harbin in 2017, expanding its capacity to 1.6 million a year, but sales peaked at 1.27 million in 2016, and are down 6% in 2017, and 34% in 2018 to about 700,000. While there are no layoffs some workers are making only $220 monthly, forcing them to take second jobs as cab drivers or couriers. Suzuki decided to quit in 2018 exiting China entirely just so it would not pile up losses in what is now a market that is way overblown from the boom years. Electric vehicle production in the pipeline of about 7.5 million vehicles will compound this problem further with 32 new plants planned by 26 firms.   ...

New risks are emerging in the shadow banking system as regulators work to make the banks safer. Banks as deposit backed financial firms are different from mutual funds, private equity and other firms that are doing more of the financing for business and home loans in the U.S. financial system. As banks deleverage responding to tighter regulation by increasing capital buffers and reducing assets, it makes the financial system safer, yet creates new risks in the shadow banking system not subject to regulation and not supported by bank deposits the way banks are. A IMF report put out in April 2015 underlines these new risks in the U.S. and European financial system. Mutual funds and exchange-traded funds now rival banks in providing financing to companies with high debt. Total bond holdings worldwide in 2014 were $9.6 trillion, increasing 25% over 2008, and the mutual funds leveraged loans increased 60% to $151 billion in the U.S., 223% in the eurozone to $126 billion, according to the IMF. The IMF points out that these mutual funds and exchange traded funds favor emerging market and corporate junk bonds, and operate in a way where they mimic each others in their investments, creating contagion. With hard to sell securities and the rapid decline in these types of funds in a panic, the effect could be to create contagion across the funds. In the mortgage lending field a similiar process of deleveraging is happening. U.S. banks share of federally guaranteed mortgages from big banks down from 61% in late 2012 to 33% in 2015, other smaller finance companies taking up 51% increasing from 24%, according to an American Enterprise Institute report. Paul Tucker, former deputy governor of the Bank of England, points out the dangers. He says policy makers and regulators are playing catchup with firms in the financial services industry who are constantly looking for gaps in the rules, a game that policymakers and regulators are likely to lose at some point....

Spotlights the shift to lighter materials and focus on fuel efficiency in the airplane industry. Henri Courpron, executive vp procurement at Airbus, says that it will double the use of titanium in the next 3 years to about 8 tons annuallyand will use most of it to make the A380 its largest plane. About 9% of the planned weight for the A350 (to compete with Boeing's 787 Dreamliner) will be titanium. Titanium prices have about doubled in past 18 months, about 100,000 tons are produced annually, with that going up to 150,000 in the next 5 yrars. Airbus finalized deals of $1.4 billion for supply to 2015 with RTI Internation Metals of Niles, Ohio, with a deal with Kamengorsk Titanium-Magnesium Plant of Kazakhstan to supply titanium ore. A $300 million retooling investment at Michigan Truck plant three years ago will make it possible for Ford to convert the plant to production of as many as 8 new models some from from Europe with a relatively small investment of $75 million. Michigan Truck Plant is in the midst of a 11 week shutdown because of unsold inventory of SUV's and trucks. Next spring Ford will move production of the Expedition and Lincoln Navigator to its Kentucky Truck Plant and then begin retooling the Michigan Truck Plant, with all of the plant's 1000 employees transferred next door to make Focus cars at the Wayne Assembly Plant where its adding a third shift in January. Truck and SUV plants in Kentucky and Mexico will probably undergo similiar makeovers at a cost of about $250 million each to rettol according to company estimates.

After the hearing on November 18, 2007, in the Senate in front of the Banking Committee, most senators remained unconvinced. Prof. Morici of the University of Maryland and some senators including the senator from Tennessee asked tough questions about the automakers business model and viability going forward and some senators voiced deep concern about the automakers resistance to better fuel efficiency standards. The testimony given in advance and the remarks ahead of the questions showed the Detroit automakers CEO's were in a disconnect as they did not come forward with an acceptance of past mistakes on fuel efficiency, lack of vision on energy conservation, and failure of union and management to address benefits and work rules that were obsolete a long time ago, relying too heavily on lobbyists and on the plea by Michigan senator Debbie Stabenow for aid. Failure to do this and relying too heavily on the job losses and economic threat may have alienated many senators who are outside the midwestern region where most of the Detroit automakers are concentrated....

This WSJ story provides a fascinating look at how Italy planned for too long, but failed to finally execute the final step of using the submersible steel floodgates that were already built to tackle just the kind of flooding that happened recently.  Problems include the use of submersible steel floodgates that would go back under water  after use in a flood, causing an additional complication to building the floodgates. The city itself was not entirely behind the plan so that execution was delayed. The politics and corruption added additional delays that astonishingly delayed the plan for over 10 years. About 80% of Venice was flooded with waters rising 6 feet above normal levels on November 12, 2019. It is hard to believe that 78 yellow steel barriers stayed on the seabed instead of blocking the three points at which water could enter from the sea into Venice. Most of the area has normal land barriers and the steel gates were designed to block water from entering at the smaller points that separate land barriers. It is also unbelievable that the plan started after a bad flood in 1966, construction beginning in 2003 after approval by over 12 public bodies, expert panels and courts on the complicated design. Costs went up as years passed from $1.7 billion to $5.5 billion. Ordinary Italians say Rotterdam has similar problems and has dams and no flooding, that the underwater design of the gates did not make sense just for aesthetics. Some experts say the underwater design doomed the project by making it costly and difficult, bureaucratic delays did the rest. The longer the delays and higher the cost the faster it eroded support in Venice and Italy, leading to this improbable result of building the flood gates with the underwater design, testing them but not making it operational in the final step, and not authorizing the use on November 11, 2019. The gates were in disuse astonishingly for so long that rust was discovered at one point.  Venice is now losing much of the population near its canals with only 50,000 remaining from a one time population of 171,000. The latest flood damage is over $1 billion and inexplicable after so much effort building the 74 yellow floodgates under water. ...

DW.com takes a deeper look at the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, an autonomous region of Azerbaijan now populated and controlled by ethnic Armenians. It has grown rapidly in the last decade at around 10% annual growth and 17% in 2017 with an influx of ethnic Armenians who have settled in the region with its higher average incomes. Karabakh has a large mining industry which provides employment for Armenians moving into Karabakh.  During the 1920's Azerbaijan and Armenia were part of the Soviet Republics which lasted till 1991. The Soviets made Karabakh part of Azerbaijan SSR with considerable autonomy. Since 1991 several wars have taken place with the largely Armenian population declaring itself independent of Azerbaijan.  Azerbaijan is three fifths Shiite and one third Sunni with close ties to its southern neighbor Iran, leading to efforts by Iran to mediate the conflict. There are social and political overtones for the conflict. Azerbaijan oil exports have been hit hard by the drop in the oil price and drop in global oil demand. Armenia has seen remittances from its 11 million Armenians living overseas drop by about 40%. Both countries face endemic corruption. Azerbaijan get 90% of export revenues from oil which is 40% of GDP. EBRD estimates exports fell by 25% in the first quarter and GDP will decline by 3% this year. Strict lockdown has also hurt the economy hard. Armenia expects a decline of 3.5% in GDP in 2020. Armenia is trying to tackle corruption with reforms since the Velvet Revolution in 2018. The conflict is a distraction from the economic and political situation, says Caucasus region expert Sylvia Stober. It could be politicians making a point as economic and social conditions deteriorate, with outside influence. Turkey has backed intervention in Libya and now supports Azerbaijan a Muslim neighbor.  Russia has a defense pact with its Orthodox Christian neighbor Armenia. In 2018 a short war lasted only 4 days when Russia intervened. This time Russia which has a defense pact with Armenia is looking to have Armenia join its Eurasia Economic Union. Armenian prime minister Nikol Pashinyan looks to Europe for closer ties. Russia supplies both warring parties in this conflict and acts as a mediator in a ceasefire. Outside influence is aggravating the conflict which has now displaced about half the population in Karabakh.   ...

Emmerentze and Germano provide this exceptional look with wide ranging interviews at a brand which has failed to make headway in the U.S. market for 2 decades, after being a prominent brand in the 70's and slipping ever since. Adidas share price declined by 38% in 2014, declining to 57 euros, recovering to 70 euros by March 2015. The economic crisis in Russia affected Adidas sales. A major problem area is the U.S. market where Nike has made major progress, and other competitors such as Under Armour and Skechers are rapidly increasing market share. Adidas is now No. 3 behind Under Armour in retail sports apparel and footwear sales, according to Stern Agee and SportsScanInfo. The U.S. operation has been tightly controlled from headquarters in Herzogenaurach, in a rural part of Germany. During CEO Herbert Hainer's leadership since 2001 share price quadrupled but the U.S. operation has languished, because say retail experts the operation does not reflect the culture savvy management style of Nike and other U.S. competitors. U.S. sales are 43% of the global athletic apparel and footwear market, and the global market of $51.6 billion moves in relation to fashion trends set in the U.S. market. CEO Hainer and managers in Germany are seen as very focussed on spreadsheets and analytical approach to sales in over 100 countries. The only design studio outside headquarters in Portland, Oregon, was setup in Brooklyn, N.Y. recently, and the 4th CEO during Hainer's leadership since 2001 is the first to be given some degree of autonomy in making design and marketing decisions. Nike's market share in athletic footwear has increased from 35% in 2005 to 47% in 2014, as Adidas remains stuck at about 10%. The Reebok acquisition for $3.8 billion in 2005 is seen by U.S. Adidas managers as a distraction. Retail store executives visiting Germany say Adidas product cycle from design to product introduction of 18 months was just too long to meet the rapidly changing preferences in the U.S. This is now being cut to 6 months. In recent years Adidas has expanded rapidly in emerging markets but management has failed to grasp the fact that trends in growing markets such as China, India, Brazil and Mexico are set by pop culture trends in the U.S. ...

Daniel Barenboim on Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. It was performed 200 years ago. The Ode to Joy section of the Ninth is the anthem of the European Union. Originally Beethoven wanted to dedicate it to the ideals of the French Revolution. Beethoven struggled with hearing loss after 1812. Many of his works were written during the period in Bonn around 1780-1792 in Bonn near Cologne where he was born, followed by his period in Vienna composing works for the Viennese court. He was a contemporary duringthe Napoleonic period of Mozart, Haydn, and the writer Goethe who was from Frankfurt. Because of struggles with his hearing loss Beethoven's symphonies record both the highs and the lows, the triumphs and the periods of loss, the nature of the human condition in a period of great social and economic awakening in Europe that led to the Industrial Revolution and modern Europe.
