Federal money to aid airlines recovery is helping airlines bring back planes and new flights, retrain pilots. Business travel is down and likely to stay that way, so that the surge is expected mostly from vacation travel. Delta has the unique situation where it can increase capacity by 30% by ending its block on middle seats on April 30, 2021. A new solar module factory in Freiberg, near Dresden, Germany, with the latest technology, requiring workers to only supervise the manufacturing process, is shown in this report in DW.com. It is cheaper to make higher performance solar panels that produce 20% more electricity in Germany than to import from China. This could be a global trend in automated supply chains. This is a technological shift says the CEO because more efficient production technology requires less resources and fewer steps in the manufacturing process. Key components such as solar cells are also made nearby in Leipzig in eastern Germany, 90 miles away.    This report shows the interesting changes that are underway. In 2018 the factory building in Freiberg now being used for solar modules was left empty after German manufacturer solar company Solarworld lost a price war with Chinese competitors. Today this solar company Meyer Burger brings new jobs and excitement to Freiberg and the region. By 2026 plans are for it to make 5 GW of modules annually in Germany. Meyer Burger made the heterojunction SmartWire technology machines that made solar modules. In 2020 it decided to make solar modules instead of selling its equipment to others, using its own proprietary technology. Thinking has changed. CEO Erfurt says it is complete nonsense to transport solar modules halfway across the world from China, they should be made where the products are used as it is energy infrastructure. Transport costs 10% of cost, and new technology is constantly being developed and costs decreasing with technology advances. He adds that this is how energy sovereignty can be achieved. In 2021 the demand is expected at 209 GW worldwide. Erfurt expects it to be 500 GW in 2025. Large demand that will now be met locally in the regions themselves- in Spain, in Germany, and in India.   ...

The German Constitutional Court established the legality of the eurozone bailouts under German law. It also stipulated that future bailouts would require the approval of a parliamentary committee. The Court ruled out any proposal that would pool Germany's debt with that of other countries in the eurozone. This rules out the issuance of eurobonds that are supported by the pooled resources of all EU countries. With no mechanism for firm budgetary discipline in place under the current structure of the EU, this is seen as an absolute no in Germany, and is opposed by all German political parties including Chancellor Merkel's Christian Democrats. ECB president, Jean Claude Trichet, is a strong supporter of the European Union, who actively participated in its creation over three decades. He insisted on budgetary discipline for all EU member states in his recent speech at a conference in Lake Cuomo resort in northern Italy. By leaving open other solutions over time that would still move forward the idea of a united Europe, the Court's view on this point coincides with that of Merkel and the ECB's current and future presidents, Trichet and Draghi. Merkel told the German parliament on Sept. 7, 2011: "Europe must come out of this crisis stronger than it went in, just as Germay came out of the crisis stronger." Merkel compared the difficulties today with the difficulties Germany faced as it tried to rebuild after World War II. Data centers for AI -rows and rows of servers 5000 in hyperscale data centers- used 4% of the US total electricity use in 2024. This is growing rapidly. By 2030 this is expected to grow by more than double, by 133%. About 60% of this to power the servers and 30% for cooling the servers. About a third of these servers are located in Virginia, Texas and California. How will this affect Cost of Living concerns, affect electricity prices? Carnegie Mellon working with North Carolina State University did the modeling on the energy and emissions implications of data center buildup in the US in their Open Outlook Initiative. A 8% annual increase in electricity prices is expected on average and as high as 25% in Virginia by 2030.  Total of about 40% increase over 5 years. Between 2014 and 2024 10 year period average cost for a home electricity use went up 25% from $114 a month to $142. This would now go up by 40% to about $200 by 2030 in just 5 years significantly impacting cost of living in the US. In which states will it strain electricity grids? In 2023 data centers consumed 26% of the total electricity supply in Virginia. In North Dakota 15%, Nebraska 12%, Iowa 11%, Oregon 11% according to Electric Power Research Institute. There are 5000 heavy truck charging stations in the US, mostly in depots and warehouses. And just five, only five public charging stations for heavy trucks. Imagine taking billions of tons of emissions from the heaviest polluters heavy trucks when very few only 2% of electric heavy trucks are sold today. New emissions rules that restrict the amount of emissons in a truck manufacturers product line would mean that 25% of heavy trucks and 40% of medium trucks will be electric by 2032. This includes school buses to cement mixers, and includes 100 types of heavy vehicles that cover tractor trailers, RV's, ambulances, garbage trucks and moving vans. The infrastructure law and the Inflation Reduction Act provide government aid- $7.6 billion electric charging infrastructure including heavy trucks, and $5.6 billion for zero or low emission buses. Another $1 billion for electric trucks and $40,000 as tax credit for companies buying electric trucks. For cars the new EPA rules from the Biden administration target an all electric or hybrid car population in the US by 2032.  This will be done by focussing on the two thirds of heavy trucks that go for less than 250 miles a day and trucks like moving vans, school buses and garbage trucks that drive less and go back to the same depot point to recharge. Volvo Trucks, Kenworth, BYD and Nikola, and Cummins engine are manufacturers who are working on new technologies and manufacturing. The bIden administration has changed the curve to make most of the gains to be done after 2030, in 3 years 203-2032 to achieve goals.  ...

Chinese banks have 20% of total loans as receivable in 2016, up from 6% at the end of 2011, according to WSJ analysis. Many banks disguise loans as receivables. The government regulators have warned about this, but are hesitant to take strong action so that there is no shock to the system. This has created a parallel buildup of debt next to official debt of over 250% of GDP. These are seen as "hidden credit risks" by Shang Fulin, top banking regulator.
