Very interesting choice made with a clear idea of what is needed and willingness to take a slight risk given that ii moderated quite a bit by the fact that this a private equity firm thats running Chrysler, the owner of Cerberus and its advisers will oversee Nardelli's management, La Sorda is handling the unions and union talks and is still President having been CEO, and a plan for Job cuts of 13000 has already been made. So the risk on the downside is limited given that GE insiders at Cerberus feel that Nardelli wants a second chance to prove himself in the manner more like what he accomplished at GE Power Systems Division.

Utah is hit hard by decline in construction and housing for young people who come to this part of the country to start families and settle here. It has the youngest population of any state. It also created more jobs than Pennsylvania a much bigger state by 5 times, between November 2006 and November 2007, suggesting that the boom in Utah continued long into 2007. It has also fewer retirees than states like Nevada, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho to help it cushion the impact. Sales of new homes fell 34% in the 4th quarter of 2007 and December housing permits fell 32% over November according to National Association of Realtors. Forecasts by Moddy's Economy.com state that new hopusing starts will fall 60% in 2008 worse than the hits to Nevada and Arizona the other worst hit states. This is also a harbringer of whats happening or likely to happen across the country. As Martin Feldstein put it in a pessimistic note on the ability of the Fed to improve things saying that one could only hope that those like the Fed itself, Treasury, IMF and other economists who show some growth in second half 2008, and who predict nothing worse than a temporary slowdown are correct. Read here a more lasting and deeper slowdown is what Feldstein fears. Feldstein was a Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors under Reagan and is a professor at Harvard. See his article in WSJ on February 20, 2008 as link to this....

Germans are afraid to move in public spaces after dark, especially young women. DW.com confirms this in its investigation in September 2025. It includes discussion with criminologist Susanne Karstedt that is cited here. The area around the main Frankfurt train station is a site for prostitution says this report, and this attracts crime and drug crime. This was unknown during our previous visits to Frankfurt over 15 years ago and is a result of changes in the Merkel years when infrastructure was neglected allowed to deteriorate ,and migrant populations were allowed into the country. It is astonishing for a visitor to see the Frankfurt station in such a dilapidated state as it is the commercial and banking city of Europe and Germany, where the European Central Bank is located. Chancellor Merz says Germans are "afraid to move around in public spaces due to migrants who do not have permanent residence status, do not work, and do not abide by our rules." A recent poll shows only one third of the poll participants think the chancellor is incorrect. Many people want to avoid the label of racism when asked about it,  but still know that public safety is clearly not what it was in the past in the 1980's and 1990's. The chancellor is only stating what he sees- "I don't know whether you have children. If you do, and there are daughters among them, ask your daughters what I might have meant. I suspect you'll get a pretty clear and unambiguous answer. There's nothing I need to retract." "There are a lot of people who say, see, and judge it this way. Once again: Ask your children, ask your daughters, ask your friends and relatives. They will all confirm that this is a problem — once it gets dark, if not before." For a visitor to Frankfurt this is clear to see as plain as daylight and reflects the decline of the Schroeder-Merkel years  similar to the decline in the US over the last two decades under Clinton-Bush and Obama. To see this in Frankfurt and other German cities near urban hubs and train stations is astonishing, sad and very disconcerting. ...

Big Tech's hiring of US inventors in large numbers can be a problem because once hired they are less productive, says this report in the WSJ. Big companies can discourage innovation because of the number of approvals needed, the corporate bureaucracy, and the need for promotions, more incentives for being cautious than being bold and taking risks.

Inflation psychology and behaviours of Americans is what the US central bank, the Fed, is most afraid of, not a recession. This is the thinking of Fed chairman Jerome Powell. Once an inflationary psychology alters people's behaviours inflation can take root making it more difficult to clear up. This is why the Fed is taking an aggressive approach to interest rate increases.

The Chinese government looks with disfavor on the long work hours, the 80 hour weeks, that were once seen as away to success. China's courts and Labor ministry detailed 10 court decisions that mandated employers respect national work laws, with workers not being forced to work overtime.
