Morgan McSweeney acquired power as an organizer removing Corbynite left politicians from the Labour party. He is from County Cork, Ireland, his father an IRA courier, who left Ireland to get a politics and marketing degree from Middlesex University. He helped Labour politicians in London during the Corbyn years and settled on Keir Starmer as the candidate for a shift to the center in politics. There was something strange about Labour's win in 2024 as it got only 34% of the vote and still a large majority. It now appears that this was a highly flawed win, as Starmer was never able to take positions on major issues without depending on McSweeney for advice and backtracking. Worse 50% of Labour's vote disappeared in 2026 polls by February hardly 2 years after the win in 2024, as the support McSweeney helped organize had no depth of conviction- most of it to Liberals and Greens under Polanski. The result is that even the Guardian is disappointed and says McSweeney installed Starmer as PM, and then made him "the most unpopular PM in history." Net favorability in Feb 2026 is -57 similar to Sunak of Conservatives in June 2024. A 75% unfavorable rating in Jan 2026. And 14 points below the Labour party in "like" ratings. The NSA faclity in Hawaii where Snowden worked was not equiped with software that monitored access to documents by employees and contractors.

NAR statistics may have overcounted home sales in the U.S. going back to 2007. NAR statistics showed home sales for 2010 at 4.9 million, down from 5.2 million in 2009. CoreLogic, a real estate analytics firm says it counted only 3.3 million home sales in 2010, down from 3.7 million sales. This is a wide divergence and suggests more severe problems in the housing market in the U.S.

The lack of Soviet era ammunition for older artillery from that period in the army of Ukraine puts Ukraine at a serious disadvantage in Donbas and eastern Ukraine. The war in eastern Ukraine is fought mostly with artillery. Soviet era artillery uses different ammunition than NATO artillery. Ukraine is now calling for NATO artillery to be sent by allies in Europe and the US so that its forces can be supplied with supplies of NATO ammunition. The US and Europe have been slow in providing NATO artillery to Ukraine.

U.S. president Obama's passive response in the handling of the NSA spying on the phones of world leaders including the president of Brazil and the chancellor of Germany comes under criticism in the U.S. The failure to provide adequate assurance- and take immediate action since the summer of 2013 when the first revelations of NSA spying were out- to regain trust of European and other leaders is seen as a weakness in leadership. With German presidential elections approaching German chancellor Merkel actually tried to tone down the initial uproar over NSA spying revelations in the summer of 2013. It was only after it was revealed in October 2013 that NSA had monitored Merkel's mobile phone did the chancellor make an issue of this and Obama could not respond to why no action had been taken since the summer and a complete review of NSA spy activities made by the President and advisors. Because world leaders are involved, and not just of allies but large emerging market nations such as Brazil, this becomes the personal responsibility of the U.S. president. Obama also comes under criticism for not responding to the failure of the healthcare website. This matter is of a different nature and could be handled by the President's Health and Human Services Secretary, Ms. Sibelius....

Priceline.com, the online airline and hotel reservation site, shows growth taking business away from Expedia and Orbitz. Priceline.com's revenues come mainly from hotel bookings. Second quarter 2013 earnings were up 24% to $437 million and revenue was up 27% to $1.68 billion. Its share price has flucuated wildly from $1000 in the dotcom bubble days down to single digits and now back up to $1000 in August 2013. The stock hit $990 in 1999, then fell to $10 after the burst of the dot com bubble. After heavy spending to expand its U.S. presence Priceline.com's share price increased by 50% in the first 8 months of 2013. It recently acquired travel site Kayak to expand its access to customers.

With fewer banks and securities houses remaining, the remaining banks like Chase and securties houses like Goldaman and Morgan Stanley are using the spreads between the price of buying and selling bonds- and the easy access to government money and FDIC guanrantees for their bonds- to make large profits. In effect the Fed is pouring money into the system to help financial institutions recover and in the process is making it possible for firms like Morgan and Goldman that were on the verge of collapsing to be able to make large profits through cheap money from the Fed. The resulting large bonuses are likely to upset a public and taxpayers who shoulder the dual burdens of a bailout of large banks, which is not making credit easier for small and medium businesses that form the backbone for employment. The smaller banks that support these businesses are failing and being closed by the FDIC. THe result- increasing joblessness and shrinking consumer demand. Meantime banks like Citigroup and Bank of America continue to see losses, so that even these profits are happening in only some parts of Wall Street....
