Modi in West Bengal - many rallies across the state for second phase of State Elections and goals for Vikshit Bharat (Modernized India 2047) with West Bengal as a key part in Paribortan or Transformation. The state has lagged far behind other states in India in industrial development, in women's rights, in standards of living, with much of the younger generation finding it hard to find jobs in a largely agricultural economy. State policies of the government have provided poor governance, lack of rule of law, and discouraged industries from setting up in the state, leading to a sense that the future is bleak for the state if this continues for any longer. As this poor state of governance has been happening for 15 years. Bengal played an important part in India's struggle for independence. Post war governments under the Congress party, Communist Party, and a local regional party TMC have all failed in succession to modernize the state economy and build its industries, leaving it as an agricultural backwater for the Indian economy. This election is an opportunity for the new generation of people in their 20's and 30's, for women, for all Bengalis to give modernization working together with the federal government and Modi a chance to set it on a new path to modernization.  ...

Vice President Vance's attempted thaw in relations with Iran (the Memorandum) and the Iranian response in missile strikes to interrupt open navigation in Hormuz on Omani side route breaking ceasefire happens on July 8, 2026. Early on in the US strikes the focus was on Iranian underground nuclear sites with preparations for nuclear weapons. When Iran shut down the Hormuz channel to navigation the US extended this to a naval blockade. As the US bombing of military targets in Iran continued in May and June the WSJ and other media were critical of the US. DJT turned to JD Vance to get the Iranians to negotiate a ceasfire with a Memorandum of points they agreed to included a plan to have talks on nuclear issue, open up the Hormuz channel, lift American naval blockade and American sanctions to Iranian oil exports. This WSJ Editorial Board commentary says Iran has not acted on as it said it would - no talks on nuclear issue are started, and Iran launched missiles against shipping in Hormuz.  This WSJ editorial says Iran does not intend to open Hormuz or discontinue its nuclear weapons efforts. In this situation the only options for the US are to find alternative sources for oil for India and Japan, and China in tacit cooperation with the US to find alternative sources as well as make more efficient use of oil. China is now doing without the 4 million barrels it was getting from Hormuz and has decided to do without these supplies altogether. For the UAE and Saudis to find alternative routes to get most of the oil out, UAE to increase output outside of OPEC to reduce prices. All of these actions are taking place and the ceasefire offered a breather for that to get established creating a new situation where if Hormuz remains unopened the rest of the world will be able to go on as before without being seriously affected. Better management of overall oil supplies is already taking place, inventories are building up, so that at some point Hormuz does not affect oil prices significantly. This is the best and most realistic option and the US, China, India, Japan, the EU, are going ahead with it. ...

Morgan McSweeney acquired power as an organizer removing Corbynite left politicians from the Labour party. He is from County Cork, Ireland, his father an IRA courier, who left Ireland to get a politics and marketing degree from Middlesex University. He helped Labour politicians in London during the Corbyn years and settled on Keir Starmer as the candidate for a shift to the center in politics. There was something strange about Labour's win in 2024 as it got only 34% of the vote and still a large majority. It now appears that this was a highly flawed win, as Starmer was never able to take positions on major issues without depending on McSweeney for advice and backtracking. Worse 50% of Labour's vote disappeared in 2026 polls by February hardly 2 years after the win in 2024, as the support McSweeney helped organize had no depth of conviction- most of it to Liberals and Greens under Polanski. The result is that even the Guardian is disappointed and says McSweeney installed Starmer as PM, and then made him "the most unpopular PM in history." Net favorability in Feb 2026 is -57 similar to Sunak of Conservatives in June 2024. A 75% unfavorable rating in Jan 2026. And 14 points below the Labour party in "like" ratings. Only 18% are favorable for Starmer. ...

The EU Council meeting shows 85 billion euros of support to Ukraine. It shows EU's continued support for Ukraine and to begin talks for Ukraine's entry into the European Union. This is a remarkable step as the war in Ukraine enters winter 2023-2024. It also shows that the Ukraine conflict has entered a final stage after stalemate in the war in which Russia would control parts of Ukraine in the east and Crimea, and Ukraine enters the European Union. This would meet Ukrainian people's need for sovereignty and lead to the next step of rebuilding and reconstruction of Ukraine. The result of the war are the expansion of NATO to include Sweden and Finland, and the new idea of NATO as protecting the Eastern European countries from invasion.

Germany's homeless problem compares with that in the US, with Federal Working Group Bag-W estimating it at 600,000 of which 50,000 live on the streets. In Germany authorites are expected to give emergency shelters to people on the streets. The Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and Building put out a 31 point Action Plan as a first step. Previous efforts have failed. The Action Plan includes getting financial assistance to state governments to build social housing -18.15 billion euros were allocated for 2022-2027 to build affordable social housing. Yet in the first year 2022 only 22,545 units were built short of the 100,000 goal per year. Affordable housing is at the heart of the fight against homelessness. There is an acute shortage that is driving up cost of housing in the US and in Germany. WSJ recently showed about a third of US housing is tied up by retired boomers hanging on to large homes. Germany's allocation of $3 billion per year is inadequate  for a problem of this magnitude that colors out perceptions of the quality of life in American and European cities. Capital markets are misallocating funds, and doing little for work that is an absolute priority for quality of life in the streets and neighborhoods of America and Europe. China has made a $7 billion investment in road and bridges in Bangladesh. The six kilometer long road and rail bridge over the Padma river was built by China. A 48 kilometer 4 lane highway around Dhaka will be completed in 2025 through China's development assistance. In all 12 roads 21 bridges, and 27 power plants during the Hasina administration, creating 550,000 jobs says Yao Wen, Chinese ambassador to Bangladesh. Other projects are built with Indian assistance trying to keep a balance between the two neighbors. A project over the Teesta river was assigned to India. A naval base south of Chittagong, the BNS Sheikh Hasina, was opened in 2023 with Chinese assistance.

The cost of living crisis and low export demand causes 0.2% decline in the German economy in 2024. This is the second year that the German economy is shrinking slightly. Germany in ocntrast to the US is not able to invest in the ageing and deteriorating infrastructure, in transportation and in roads and bridges, other investment needs, because Merkel placed a clause to limit spending into the German constitution. The FDP party in the German Social Democrats Greens FDP coalition acted as a brake on spending during the Scholz first term. The result is deep problems in German infrastructure. Deutsche Bahn trains are chronically late because of poor maintenance and old equipment.

Much of the US jobs market is stalled with a "noticeable deterioration" by June says the Fed. Companies are not laying off people, yet they are also not hiring. The class of 2025 faces a job market with a real slowdown. Hiring has dropped 44% compared to June 2022 says one payrolls company Gusto looking at data from 400,000 businesses. The economy has 4% unemployment, yet for new college graduates it is 6.6% for 12 months ending May 2025. Some companies are pushing back dates of hire into 2026.

How quickly things can change - Italy is now growing faster than Germany or France. The construction industry is booming with energy efficient home renovation. The superbonus 110 is a payment by the Italian government for energy efficient housing improvements. The government pays 65% of the cost to homeowners making better energy efficient renovations plus 10%. As introduced by the Five Star movement government it was 100% plus additional 10%. Giorgia Meloni's government lowered it to 65% from 75% in 2023. This has boosted the construction industry in Italy and revived Italy's growth where it is growing faster than France and Germany. Germany is seeing about 0.3% growth compared to 0.7% predicted by OECD for Italy in 2024. Giorgia Meloni the new Italian prime minister, after Mario Draghi a central banking official, has continued Draghi's policies and provided a measure of stability and leadership to the government.  Much of the capital comes from the $216 billion or $200 billion euros that will be given to Italy from the COVID Recovery Fund. Under PM Trudeau of the Liberals Party Canada opened its door to immigration and meeting labor shortages. This put a strain on housing and social services when in 2022 1 million people were added to the population, now 41.6 million. Canada under Mark Carney of the Liberals party sets new temporary residents target from 670000 in 2025 to 385000 in 2026 and 370000 in 2027 and 2028. 

"We needed to bring our immigration level to a more sustainable level," says Canada's finance minister, Francois-Philippe Champagne. For the first time there is a drop in population of British Columbia and Ontario. Only Alberta increased population. There are 2.8 million non permanent residents mostly international students and temporary foreign workers or 6.5% of the population in 2025.

Improvement in the managing of India's trade deficit with China. Merchandise exports from India to China increased from $11.93 billion in 2014-2015 to $21.6 billion in 2021-2022, an increase of 78% over the last 6 years. Imports from China from $60.41 billion in 2014-15 to $94.6 billion in 2021-2022. The trade deficit with China during 2021-2022 is at $73.31 billion compared to $44.03 billion in 2020-2021. Most of the goods imported from India were in equipment and intermediate parts to meet the needs of electronics, telecom and power sectors in India.
