This WSJ editorial in September 2014 says many of president Obama's statements and decisions on Obama healthcare legislation and implementation, Syria, NSA and privacy, the Middle East, Russia, showed poor judgement. It refers to a piece by Peter Baker in NYT where it is said that Obama mocked how people see him as too professorial, diffident, in a sarcastic statement. The problem says WSJ is that president Obama has poor judgement. Being academically credentialed and quick grasp of subject matter is not the same as having the ability to discern things, instinct and grasp of the essence of the matter. George Bush senior had a long resume and was academically credentialed. By comparison Truman had a short resume and was not academically credentialed or quick with data and analysis. He had something more essential and important- a discerning mind and grasp of the larger picture, as well as listening abilities for exceptional advisors such as General Marshall and Acheson he gathered around him....

The government of prime minister Manuel Valls collapses in August 2014 after differences between Valls and Economy minister Montebourg over austerity measures. Montebourg is openly critical of the austerity policies that lead to no growth in France and a prolonged period of stagnation. Britain's banks still owe the government 100 billion pounds ($158 billion) from the bailouts that followed the 2008 financial crisis. The incentivizing of risk by pay structures and bonuses was seen as a big part of the problem. LIBOR manipulation abuses by banks are still on regulators minds. The Financial Conduct Authority and the Bank of England's Prudential Regulation Authority, have set new rules to correct the problem. Earlier EU rules limited bonuses to 100% of salary. The new FCA rules require a 3 year period for traders and risk managers have to wait 5 years for performance awards in full. Top executives have a ten year wait to be certain claw back provisions do not go into effect. Andrey Bailey at the PRA says the rule is designed so "that people in positions of responsibility are rewarded for behaviour which fosters a culture of effective risk management and thus promotes the safety and soundness of individual institutions. European Union and at its heart Germany cut oil and gas use by 25% over a short period. The WSJ looks at one company that makes agricultural machinery such as harvester combines in Germany, and how it did this. The lesson from this experience- long dependent on cheap oil and gas supplies from Russia Germany was not expected to bounce back and cut its use sharply, when prices of Russian gas increased 20 fold. Not only did this German company slash gas use by 30% by making technical changes in how the machinery operated, and by using oil pipes, storing LNG from other countries such as Britain and Norway.  A 6% decline in sales to eastern and central Europe was offset by a 35% growth in sales in the US. By pivoting to the US German manufacturers have increased sales. The US has also become a major supplier of LNG to Europe. This makes it possible for Germany to conduct its own policies free of the kind of influence Russia exerted on Europe. So what does the CEO of German company Claas say about this experience- he says the export model is robust but in a different form with the US Europe's and Germany's biggest partner. The lesson of the past few years says CEO Bock- "Don't be dependent on one country." Not Russia, and not China. ...
