The bicentenary of Napoleon is remembered in 2021 in France and the French speaking world.  Napoleon helped defend the French revolutionary ideals of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity, in the period 1789 to 1799 including the efforts of the French Army in Italy and other countries freeing people from feudal powers. In the period that followed Napoleon ruled France 1799-1812 during which he introduced new ideas of the Civil Code and revolutionary France to countries in different parts of the world. It was in Britain and the Iberian Peninsula that his policies faltered and his regime was seen as tyrannical after the early years.  George Washington was a contemporary of Napoleon and brought both these ideals that the French Revolution cherished to the American colonies, and yet did not seek anything beyond this-as he said the "approbation of good and virtuous people is the limit of my ambition." In this exceptional report of the housing market in Roanoke, Virgina, Neil Irwin talks to builders, home buyers, renters and young people. San Francisco and Washington D.C. are the exception in housing markets- hundreds of America's midsize cities like Roanoke are seeing smaller rates of household formation leading to a decline in demand for single family homes and fewer homes being built. This accounts for a large part of the smaller growth in U.S. GDP. There are he points out about 2.3 million missing households as a result of a significant change in home buying patterns that is reducing demand for new construction of single family homes. During the period 2001-2006, before the 2008 global financial crisis, the rate of new U.S. household formation was about 1.35 million annually. This dropped to 569,000 in 2007-2013, as the effects of the crisis were felt in a deep recession. One result is more young people are postponing buying a house and living with their parents. Faced with large student debt- the total U.S. student debt passed $1 trillion for the first time recently- purchases of homes are becoming more dfficult. Of 18-34 year olds 27% lived with their parents before 2006, according to Labor Department data. This went up to 31% following the recession. Lack of good jobs is another factor. In 2014 March only 63% of 18-24 year olds had jobs. Even young people older than 24 with jobs felt it necessary to save money by living with their parents. More retirees too are moving into apartments....

State laws in 18 states and in New York CIty make manufacturers responsible for recycling electronics. Similiar stautes were introduced in 13 other states in 2009. When states like Maine and Washington have made it easy for people to take their old electronics PC or television sets to dropoff points the response has been very good. In Washington the drop off is free of charge, and there are 200 collection points in the state, with 15 million pounds of electronic waste collected since January.

This report in WSJ shows the European response to China's effort. A survey by the EU Chamber of Commerce in China shows 58% of companies have not been able to participate in Made In China initiatives. There is concern that global supply chains are not being utilized in robotics, aerospace, and electric vehicles, three areas under China's program.  62% of companies say they didn't know whether this was leading to increased discrimination against foreign companies.

Her demeanor and manners are very different from Donald, she uses words carefully, and thoughtfully. The contrast could not be greater, even though Maryanne is also straightforward and not one for political correctness in describing things the way she sees it, including defendants who have committed serious crimes. She says she is the first one in her family to go to college, and went to law school 13 years after graduating. She says her Christian faith helped her survive the ordeal of losing her husband and parents in the short period of one year.

Among women 18-29 less than 30 percent say their career or education has been hurt by sexism or child-care needs. The figures move higher with age. This is one of the reasons that Hillary Clinton draws more votes from older women than younger women. This is one of the insights from analysis of polling questions in a University of Massachusetts poll before the Massachusetts primary in Feb. 2016. Another insight from this article in the WP is that it also shows younger women think deeply about the issues. In a general election with Trump as the nomnee these women supporting Sanders are likely to vote for Clinton because of being alienated by the sexist comments of Trump.
