The fast food industry in US relies on the franchise model which has been deeply affected by depressed wages, poor working conditions and other worker abuses. Governor Gavin Newsom signs into law on Labor Day 2022, the FAST Recovery Act which established a state council tasked with setting wage standards for the entire franchise and food industry. Workers will now get a seat at the table to set standards for wages, and health and safety standards for the industry. Wages will be set at $22 per hour starting next year for about half a million workers in the franchise and fast food industry in California.

It says even with the extreme weather disasters phasing out fossil fuels was a politically toxic issue in Australia and no party wanted to talk about it except the Greens. The election has changed this decisively with the Greens and other smaller parties getting one third of the vote. No party has proposed cutting carbon emissions by over 50%- Labour at 43% and Morrison coalition at 26%. Labour won by taking up climate change as an issue.

37 tornadoes hit 6 US states in a weird weather pattern. One tornado stretched for 250 miles sweeping through and flattening whole towns such as the 10,000 people working class town of Mayfield, Kentucky. Kentucky was hardest hit, other states were Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Mississippi and Tennessee. The last time a tornado stretched out this far was in 1925 for 219 miles. The number and range of tornadoes suggests a change in weather patterns. Some debris hurled into the air as high as 30,000 feet is a sign of the changes in severity of weather patterns. List of people unaccounted for was 8 pages long in one town.

Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor from Arizona was a pioneer of women's rights in the workplace, and had her own struggles before being the first woman appointed to the US Supreme Court. Born on a vast 200,000 acre cattle ranch in El Paso she was much of a cowgirl. She is considered to have blazed a trail for other women through her life and work. She was appointed by Reagan in 1981 and served till 2006. In 1952 when she graduated from law school at Stanford women had a hard time working in the legal profession.

Taylor Swift Era's Tour gives a boost to local economies in the hospitality and entertainment sector. In Colorado 2 Taylor Swift shows added $140 million to the state's GDP. Occupancy records in cities in the US and Asia are broken with these Swift tours. The Swift concerts will play at many cities in Europe including Cardiff and Liverpool. Then why are concerts only in Singapore and Tokyo in Asian venues. Singapore provided additional funding for the concerts which could add with other concerts about $300 million to the local economy. Swift has a large following in Japan with people waiting camped overnight for these concerts.

San Diego Padres go all in for hiring the best players with a huge budget of $250 million. Diamond Networks is setup by Sinclair Broadcast Group with $8 billion of borrowed money to finance aggressive sports television expansion including major league baseball. The Padres depend on Sinclair's spending for television broadcast rights which are turned over to Comcast cable television and other cable providers, who face reduced subscribers because of cord cutting and people shifting to streaming services as cable television becomes prohibitively expensive. At some point the costly deals arranged by Sinclair cannot find buyers and it goes into bankruptcy.

Apple and Microsoft make up 13.3% of the S&P 500. Apple makes up 7.1% of S&P 500. Other tech stocks such as Netflix, Google, Facebook and Amazon have lost value. Apple and Microsoft are the only two stocks that have gained ground. One has to go back to IBM and AT&T in 1978 to see two stocks with a significant share in the S&P 500. During the banking crisis Apple and Microsoft have acted as havens in the stock markets. Both energy and banking stocks have lost value. Tech stocks lost value in 2022 and are regaining some ground.

In 2023 there are 4.3 million electric vehicles on American roads and 150,000 public charging ports. President Biden's goal is for 50% of cars to be EV's by 2030 with 500,000 public charging ports. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory affiliated with DOE forecasts need for 1 million charging ports. Ohio and Pennsylvania are leading the way in a slow start with other states joining in. A single public charging port can cost about $150,000. It will cost $31 billion to $55 billion to build the public portion of a national charging network. About $24 billion is planned investment.

Rosalynn Carter is the most politically active first lady since Eleanor Roosevelt. She actively participated in Jimmy Carter's political campaigns first for governor of Georgia, then for the US presidency as a Democrat in 1976. Both come from a small peanut farming town of Plains, Georgia. Carter served in the Navy and went to Annapolis for naval training. The biggest decision coming out of the NATO and European Council meetings is Germany saying it supports stationing of long range missile systems in Germany by the US by 2026. German chancellor Scholz says the decision was a long time in the making and Germany supports it as a necessary step to secure the country. This happens as China's support to Russia continues through trade and economic relations and the Ukraine war prolonged for another year into 2025. Other decisions were to provide F-16's and added Patriot missile systems so that Ukraine can defend its skies from missile attacks.

China's efforts to rescue the housing industry and construction industry will be limited as the government is now concerned not to set off another bubble like that in the past. Assistance will be limited to unsold apartments which local governments can now buy to use for affordable housing, and $42 billion is provided for a central government fund to buy apartments that are unsold. This will reduce excessive inventory and the government will stop at that point no wanting to create new bubbles. Attention is now focused on increasing manufacturing of electric vehicles for export and other manufacturing in solar, renewable energy.

Google parent Alphabet operates Waymo robotaxis venture with $5 billion investment. It is the only operator of robotaxis after General Motors exited the market following an accident. About 300 Waymo robotaxis operate in the city of San Francisco and some suburbs, 400 robotaxis in other cities, a first in the US and are limited to surface streets only. All cash purchases of homes by wealthy seniors and by foreign owners in 2013-2014. The thinning out of homes as distressed properties available from foreclosures in 2014. Institutional investors are also buying homes. Black Rock bought 45,000 homes for $8.6 billion in 2012 and 2013, and is retrenching a bit as it reduces purchases to about $30-$40 million a week in 2014. Other buyers from the middle class are still struggling to build up enough savings to buy homes, a reason for the weakness in the housing market.

Brooks describes the U.S. presidential campaigns of Republican Romney and Democrat Obama as very consequential but incredibly dull, an effort to get uninformed voters with a barrage of negative advertising. There is very little enthusiasm for either candidate in their parties and the only feeling motivating each party is that the other candidate and his policies would be a disaster. There is hardly any effort at intellectual innovation, bringing new ideas or thoughtful debate into the election campaign. At a joint seminar, the central banks of China and S. Korea express their strong opposition to the U.S. Federal Reserve's QE III program. Bank of Korea Governor Kim Choong-soo said: "The rise in global liquidity could lead to rapid capital inflows into emerging markets including South Korea and China and push up global raw material prices. Therefore Korea and China need to make concerted efforts to minimize the negative spillover effect arising from monetary policies of advanced nations." For China this makes its own policy decisions harder. Chen Yulu, adviser to the central bank People's Bank of China says about inflation and bubble fears: "on the one hand China needs to stabilize growth, but on the other hand China is very worried about a property price rebound." Slowing growth makes the capital inflows smaller but the concerns persist for the longer term effects of the U.S. Fed's QE programs.

A Fitch Ratings report says that an estimated 7.5 trillion yuan of loans have been made by Chinese banks, exceeding the limit that bank regulators had set for 2010 for new local currency lending. In addition another 3 trillion yuan was loaned by using trusts and other mechanisms and this has not been recorded on bank balance sheets. Including this lending taking place in a sort of shadow banking system, the total lending is the same as in 2009 when the heightened stimulus lending ocurred. This explains the inflationary pressures facing the Chinese economy and the growing property bubble.

Lenovo's acquisition of Motorola Mobility for $2.91 billion. After Google acquired Motorola Mobility, Lenovo's Mr Yang invited Mr. Schmidt of Google to dinner and told him Lenovo would be interested in acquiring the smartphone maker if Google decided it did not want to be in the hardware business. Google sees Lenovo as the company which can make smartphones at lower prices to reach a larger number of users. It also offsets the price rigidities in the market with Samsung controlling a large market share and reaping a larger share of the profits compared to other firms.
