When Amory Houghton was CEO in 1964 of Corning Glass, the company made the glass used to encase TV tubes. The company lost this market to cheaper Japanese imports. It was the shift to tiny strands of glass that replaced copper wire as away to transmit voice and data, that saved Corning.  He had to cut employees by one thirds in the beginning but soon was back to a new business. As Houghton says it was back on his own turf, with its own patents and scientific expertise.   After running the company till 1983 he considered becoming a missionary in Zimbabwe in the Episcopal Church, but decided instead to run for Congress as Amo his nickname, for the southern part of New York state. The company that made lightbulbs for Thomas Edison in the 19th century, shifted first to glass to encase TV tubes, and then in another change turned to fibre optics in the 20th and early 21st century. NYT reports show the Republican health care bill AHCA 33 votes short of passing the House and likely to fail. Conservative Republicans were looking to whittle down the safety net in the Affordable Care Act, and moderate Republicans could not stomach the whittled down bill removing guarantees of essential benefits for instance. The basic problem- no real consensus among Americans about providing health care to all Americans, and no real solutions possible as long as there is acceptance of disproportionately high levels of medical care costs for treating each disease in the U.S. compared to Europe and other countries.

Copies with slight changes to extend drug life with new brand names- Clarinex for Claritin, Nexium for Prilosec, Paliperidone for Risperdal being the latest in this new marketing strategy of drug companies to extend the life and sales of a successful drug. The drug companies try to market the copy drug as a significant improvement, which is what J&J is doing with Paliperidone. Experts are skeptical. Pricing of the generic versions of Risperdal or its copy will be much less expensive. Cost is a sensitive issue. About 15% of Risperdal's $1.35 billion sales were from Medicaid, generic substitutions offer potentially large savings. Meantime J&J did not do clinical tests between Risperdal and Paliperidone, the tests with 1600 patients compared Risperdal with a sugar pill. A psychiatry Professor at Duke and another professor at NYU are skeptical of J&J claims for Paliperidone. United Health shows savings of $150 million by using generics instead of Nexium, so managed care payors will tread carefully....

Senator Lamar Alexander is a kind of misssionary for electric cars and for a major push with government assistance in this area. A bill sponsored by Alexander and Senator Byron Dorgan plans to designate 5 to15 urban areas as model locations for electric car use. These areas would get money for infrastructure such as recharging stations, and people in the areas would get an additional tax credit to take the tax credit from $7,500 to $10,000. The bill has important provisions for promoting research at companies and universities to improve electric car batteries. $1.5 billion would be allocated for research in electric car batteries, and a $10 million prize for the person or company able to build a battery with a 500 mile range. The total cost- $10 billion.

The Nebraska Supreme Court reverses a lower court ruling clearing a hurdle for construction of the Keystone pipeline. At about the same time the U.S. House of Representatives voted 266 to 153 in Jan. 2014 to pass a bill approving the project. It will pass a Senate vote. President Obama says he will veto the bill. The pressure clearly increases on Obama to approve the pipeline.

The SEC filed the Goldman civil suit the same day that its Inspector General released a report on the gross failure of the SEC for a decade to catch the Ponzi scheme of Allen Stanford. As a result of the lawsuit against Goldman that report never got the front page coverage it deserved leaving most people unaware of some crucial facts about SEC behaviour. The IG report shows how the enforcement chief of the SEC Fort Worth office quashed his staff's efforts to investigate- and following this how he goes into private practice landing Stanford as a client. The Goldman Abacus case has a whole cast of characters, the SEC, the Ratings agencies, and even the supposed victims German bank IKB. IKB sold commercial paper IOU's to investors in mid 2007 that were worthless to investors by the end of that year. IKB's CEO Stefan Ornstein went on trial in Germany for lying about IKB's financial condition before its collapse.

Business Week's Michael Lewis has some serious questions and a message for investment bank Goldman. His questions- ACA was incompetent which is why it was chosen as CDO (collaterized debt obligation) manager. ACA was chosen by Goldman precisely because it did not know what it was doing and lost $900 million in the process. So too IKB, the dull witted German bank which lost $150 million. Goldman did not lose $100 million on the Abacus deal because Goldman was shorting the subprime market by March 2007 the time of the Abacus deal. Knowing this requires transparency of all dealings of Goldman's proprietary trading desk to understand real losses. Fab Tourre, the 27 year old Frenchman, is just a kid in this game. The real name behind this is Jonathan Egol. Who is this guy who clearly knew the subprime market was doomed in 2006 in remarks he made at the time.

The National Childhood Vaccine Injury Compensation Program protects vaccine makers from much of the litigation risk faced by pharmaceutical manufacturers. It limits compensation for death to $250,000. This special vaccines court is called Office of Special Masters at the U.S. Court of Federal Claims. This may be one reason for Pfizer's willingness to pay $68 billion for Wyeth which is amaker of childhood vaccines. Vaccines will generate $21.5 billion in sales by 2012, according to Sanofi-Aventis. Vaccines are biologic products that can't be copied. Wyeth's Prevnar is designed to protect children against 7 strains of pneumococcal disease. It has sales of $2.7 billion projected to grow to $5.5 billion in 2015 according to Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Vaccines have driven huge reductions in childhood diseases, and the Act is designed to potect makers of vaccines, who suffered from excessive litigation in the 1980's.

In this WSJ op-ed, Michael Oren, Israel's former ambassador to the U.S. 2009-2013, describes the difficult moments in the Israel- U.S. relationship during the 7 years of the Obama administration. He says prime minister Netayahu made mistakes, but president Obama acted deliberately against Israel's interests. Oren says two core principles of the Israel-U.S. relationship, that of "no daylight" or no open disagreements, and "no surprises," were broken during the two terms of the Obama administration. One such moment says Oren was in May 2011, when Obama endorsed the 1967 lines with land swaps- a former Palestinian position- as basis for peace-making. M. Netanyahu was seen as lecturing the U.S. president about this the next day, according to Oren, because he was assured by the Israeli ambassador that this was not going to happen and it came as a surprise to Netanyahu.
